So it is probably impossible. At least that is what Arri would say. I spend way too much of my time thinking about how I can buy/borrow/steal an Arri 8r Ultra Prime lens. Any day I am not working I sit at the local coffee shop and hang out with an old lens guru talking about this lens. I don't care about telephoto, although the 300mm looks great. I have a wide angle obsession (I bought the 17-35 nikkor on Evan's recommendation, but it's not enough). I also could care less about fisheye. I think Red should make a 7mm rectilinear lens. If this is actually impossible, I would settle for an 8mm rectilinear lens. Underwater and miniature shooters would love you. It would also be nice if it was f2.8 or lower. Wishful think I know, but even if it weighed 25 lbs I would buy it. I have a feeling a lot of other people on this board would as well, and if anyone could pull off the impossible it's you guys. Done ranting. I'm drunk and need to pass out and dream about 4k in 7mm.

I would buy one!

A red super wide prime would be a great solution for us underwater guys even a 10mm - although Arri made the 8R 35% smaller than the Zeiss 10mm - very cool.

The ultimate would be a Red zoom that nailed the ultra-wide range for 4K like the Canon 10-22 except cine quality.

Low on the Red team totem pole at this point probably.

Hi,

I have shot many minatures, I don't see how you could use a 7mm for macro.

While a superwide zoom would be great, it is also a much bigger challenge. I think we should seriously push for a super wide prime - we need it - and it is probably doable as a follow up to the 300mm since then they would have superwide prime, midrange zoom, and supertelephoto.

Just from a marketing standpoint it makes some sense too, there are a lot of midranges available on the used market - but you just don't see the superwide.

Listening Jim?

Please?

Hey Stephen, I could be wrong about the miniature thing. I just remember reading in the Arri brochure some mention of that because of the rectilinear perspective. It would maybe be more useful for the larger miniatures like the ones in Lord of the Rings.

I just talked to Arri about 8r and he promised to bring one next week and made few tests with this lenses here. I will test this lenses once we get first RED, by me or someone close here. BTW I thought that 10mm T2 and 8R are made by Zeiss?

As to 8R this lenses are good for 1 to 2.4 screen format and not only for wide angle shots.
2.4 screen needs minimum 90 degree FOV. Gives you nice shots.

You can get 10 mm T2 second hand in very good condition for 9K and it will be very good lens for RED.

Hey Andrew, aren't they an Arri/Zeiss collaboration?

It is a pity they did not settle for a 14mm wide on the red zoom. i had looked at the technology involved in going from 18mm down to even 16mm but the cost starts to zoom up (pardon the pun) for each step wider. The red zoom at an estimated $9,500 is a lot for ordinary guys to purchase. I would imagine the price to make the red zoom a 14mm instead of am 18mm could make the price of the red zoom out of reach for quite a few of us. I dont think we are talking about just one or two thousand dollers here. Also the weight factor at an estimated 6-7lbs for the red zoom would be out the window if the lens was much wider. I am positive in my own mind that red will be making a red wide angle prime soon, a mention surely at NAB will confirm. I am just guesiing but the price of a 12mm or less cine prime leaves a great opportunity for red to make money on a decent wide prime. Just a beginners thoughts........

Maybe we can ask RED to set up a refundable deposit for a 10mm ultra wide prime to gauge economic feasibility on their end? Of course there is a much bigger market outside of the RED community for a Zeiss alternative - I keep hearing about lens shortages and USD exchange rate doom and gloom theories.

It would definitley be interesting to know the interest in a competitivley priced 8-10mm pl prime lens outside of the reduser community. I for one, will probably cancel my zoom reservation if they announce a set of primes including and ultra wide. I don't mind waiting a while either. My Nikons will hold me out until then.

I am pretty sure we will see more lens options from RED, probably announced at NAB, I am pretty sure RED has established a connection to some well known cinelens company... time will show...

I am in. Also WideAngle addict.

Hey Andrew, aren't they an Arri/Zeiss collaboration?

They are. Exclusively built. Hence an Arri lens is a Zeiss.

Good idea too.
