View Full Version : what about avid and the red camera?

hello
i m an editor working on avid and i cant find any information about avid and the red camera, that annoying me because i d like to stay on avid product
does someone know something about the connection between red camera and avid and an hypothetic 100% avid workflow ?
is there a way to digit directly from the camera to an avid product throught downconversion or converter or something like that?

You could take your footage and encode it in Redcine, output it at 4K, 2K, 1080P, 720P, etc, and then encode it to whatever format you want.

thank you for your answer but do you know what the average time to have 1 hour rush ready to be edited in dv format for example?
is it possible to edit dv format and then conform with 1080, 2k etc?
i mean what about the timecode and offline editing in this workflow, they dont talk about conformation

Think you'll be looking at exporting your EDL. Import edl into REDCINE, Conform and export at desired REZ. Not sure on mixes etc though...

You know what I'd love. I'd love to be able to import REDCODE RGB directly into Avid. To have easy synergy between REDCINE and AVID and then be able to reconform in DS Nitris or higher...However, i think we'll have to go the intermediate step since Avid seems 1) slow to support formats (especially single camera codecs) 2) use their own DNxHD for 2K mastering.

Avid is going to be a huge question, for me. What codec to output your RAW 4K footage will best hold up in Avid's paradigm.? What codec to go into DNxHD if you have to do that ? Will there be an appreciable difference in image quality if you go from
4K RAW -> intermediate codec -> DNxHD -> reconform to mastering codec ? And is that workflow even possible, or do you have to stay in DNxHD ? Monitoring real1080p/2K in Avid ? Realtime performance of 1080p/2K in Avid ?

Personally, I'm going to wait to see the options. I'm wondering if Apple & RED are going to have a surprise at NAB. Or is it just a coincidence that their booths (and Aja) are surrounding one another ? The biggest problem I have with Avid is not getting straight answers from them. If anyone was around during the Mojo SDI debate, you'll know what I'm talking about.

If Avid supports Apple QuickTime codecs freely... you should be able to edit RCRGB right in the app. If it's still as finicky as I remember it, well...

Keep in mind that QuickTime is not a native codec for AVID. It will transcode that to its own format.

As indicated before we want you to be able to use the footage you shot with the camera. That's about all I can say right now.

QuickTime is not really a codec.
There are Avid codecs for QuickTime but you don't use them to edit.
They are just for exporting and importing to and from native omf, aif and mxf.

The best solution would be to export an Avid DNxHD mxf with including metadata from Redcine and put it in the Avid MediaFiles folder.
That way you can find it in Media Tool and start to edit right away.

That was a slip up. QuickTime is indeed not a codec. It should have read QuickTime codecs. My bad.

that what i hope too! i m afraid of the quicktime step and the waste of time, but it seems that avid and red team are in contact :) :

that would be so cool to digit redcode directly in avid or that redcine could export avid OMF or MFX
and i hope there is soon time test about the redcine encoding in order to argue with fact with my production about buying one

someone said "import into REDCine"... Is REDCine Software? Or a Blackbox? Is it integrated into the camera itself? I know what it does, but i'm not quite sure where.

REDCINE is software. Runs on Intel Mac or Windows.
