Hello,
I'm new here. I'm Location Sound Mixer located in Belgium. I did 1500 commercials and 250 feature films/documentaries/shorts. I began working on film sets in 1977.
I have been told I will do a commercial shooting with a RED camera. Trying to find some information about Audio & TC, I read the discussions in this forum.
There is a lot of questions very interesting about the audio conectors, the input level, the TC accuracy. But I don't see any reassuring words or some precise answers from the RED camera designers.
My opinion is, for the moment, I will work without using any audio or TC from the camera and consider that is a picture acquisition device. Do smart slate and sync sound & picture at the post production facility.
Except if someone can tell me what precise cable wiring to use, what is the impedance input, the maximum level for 0dB FS, etc.
I don't know at this time what camera will be rent, and the software version / revision number.
I hope the designers of that camera making a lot of "noise" around the DOP and Cameramen community will listen to the audio people or to the audio concerned camera people.
From my point of view, I don't like to have to put sound on cameras (except a guide sound thru a radio frequency transmitter).
The audio recorder I use have all the ergonomics and the quality to record audio on 8 tracks, doing sound reports, having all the monitoring and stereo managment.
The video cameras manufacturers could spare some place & some time not designing audio circuitry / interface in the camera bodies, and use the resources to fine tune the noise / the heating issues.
But I know in some circumstances that is very practical to have two audio tracks of audio on the same medium as picture to be very fast in editing.
In that case, audio have to be very reliable and the interface with professional audio equipment a "must".
I hope I will find some other audio professionals to share my opinion.
