View Full Version : Shutter Vs ND

I have a shoot in a lot of sun in two days time and haven't been able to source any kind of IR filter. One way or another, some stop is going to have to come off and I don't want too much DoF.

There may be some black clothing in the shots so I don't want to go too high with the ND filters, so I guess I'll try and have a shorter exposure time.

Does anyone have any experience with how many NDs will induce an unacceptable IR effect?

If I use the shutter, what have people found an acceptable, minimum exposure time at 25fps? is 45 degrees (1/200th) too fast (in terms of avoiding the stuttered effect)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

ND 0.3 and 0.6 are no problem. With 0.9 the problem begins to appear.

Thanks, I'd guessed that going past 0.6 would be the start. Nice to have it confirmed. Can you live with 0.9?

What exactly do I need to purchase combat this IR problem. Is there a 4X5.6 IR filter that will solve this?

I think there are a few in the making, but at the moment you can only get very small ones.

What exactly is the ND problem and what does it look like?

You can get a screw-on IR from 2filters.com about $150

I saw a hot mirror combined with an nd filter at the Tiffen booth at NAB last week. I think they said it would ship in May.

yep, saw these too. If you really want them, best to order now because the're not shipping and already back ordered.

They're more expensive though. $600 a piece... ouch :(

I did a quick test today.

ND2.1 was very purple. Everything from 1.2 down looked fine. Maybe it was the shot.
