If you are looking for a set of 2.8 or better primes the 70mm Sigma
macro has a nice test. Any one used one?

Sigma seems to have some pretty long lenses like this massive 200 to 500 2.8 Zoom. Now thats a wild....life lens.
The Sigma Digital ED 14 / 35 Zoom 2.0 all the way thru the range, looks like a contender for the wide end in Nikon or Canon mounts?

Now that will really require some heavy duty RED Rail???
PS When I posted this about using Sigma, I had'nt noticed the thread ULTRA TELEPHOTO which deals with the same lens
My purpose in this post was to get discussion going about Sigma/Tamron etc. which are less money and some are pretty good lenses.

Sure ... I did see the big Sigma (200-500mm/f2.8 Zoom) announcement, I mean your reference to :
'Sigma Digital ED 14 / 35 Zoom 2.0'
which I took to mean a Sigma ED 14-35mm/f2 zoom -> where is the link to this lens announcement ?

Affordable telephoto zoom Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 APO DG for sports, nature and wildlife documentary shootings highly recommended!
Also with Nikon F mount. I have it with Canon EOS mount, see below.

i'm a big fan of the tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the 28-75 f2.8
both are 2.8 for the full range, and very sharp. I use them on the d2x regularly without any problems. The 28-75 is the only one with manual aperture control though.

Sanjin,
I've been looking at the Sigma 50-500mm for shooting DSLR sports and nature pics. I've spoken with some other shooters in those genres that own the lens, and really like it. Does it have a manual iris ring? I read through the info on the Sigma web site and could find no mention of a manual iris ring. If it does, it may be a candidate for an affordable long focal length zoom for RED One, using a Nikon mount.

Gibby,
Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG/HSM also goes digital only and that means it is optimized for digital SLR cameras. It has fittings to Sigma, Canon and Nikon-D, Konica Minolta and Pentax. Also Nikon-D means no a manual iris ring. Maybe later with a little help from the Birger we could use it with the RED ONE.

Thanks for the links Sanjin. Even though the Sigma 50-500 doesn't have manual iris capability, I may still get one for DSLR use. If Birger ended up developing an adaptor, and the lens was then usable on RED One, that would be very cool...

One of my favorite lenses with Canon EOS. And now I have wrapped one PL 35mm lens price bargain. In a couple of days I will get it. Stayed tuned.

We have an SA mount adapter. I am supposed to go to Sigma and do some testing over the next couple weeks. I will make sure we test this lens.

Excellent...I'll be very interested in the results on that...
Some other new Sigma lenses that also interest me are: 8mm f3.5 fisheye and the 70-200mm f2/8 zoom.

Sigma have got pretty competitive lenses for almost every popular DSLR mount.

I had shot several national spots for a producer with my Redrock M2 prototype with cine lenses when he was hired to produce an infomercial for the UK. Since we would be traveling and shooting testimonials with non-actors, he wanted me to shoot with a zoom instead of primes.
I ordered the M2 with a Nikon mount and picked up the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8. It worked flawlessly. The only issue for dramatic work is the short travel distance from minimum focus to infinity. About a 90 degree turn of the focus ring. Since we were shooting mostly interviews, it wasn't a problem.
I used the Sigma on an Indie a couple of months ago with the HVX/M2 combo. It intercut perfectly with the Nikkor primes.
