It is two of these:

I've only seen it as one piece in the renders from the RED FAQ. Every other thing I've seen in photos are 2 seperate Top Mounts.

I think some of the old part listings in the FAQ are outdated. There is no "top plate" from RED. You can use two top mounts, rods and universal mounts to mount items to the top. ElementTechnica sells their Top Cheese Plate, which mounts between the two top mounts (RED's 19mm top mounts or their own 15mm top mounts).

Plastic? Seems too inexpensive to be machined aluminium.

The FAQ is very outdated. Those are two top mounts... they were redesigned from when I wrote the FAQ.
The top mounts are made of cast aluminum.

thanks.
but i was told top mounts are "sold out" for present deliveries, so what is the alternative right now to get rods on top of camera (for cradle etc...)

Without the top mounts, it will be hard to mount rods on top of the camera. Element Technica is sold out of their top mounts as well. There are still ways to mount things, but you may just have to wait for the parts you want to become available again. ...Use longer rods on the base of your config and extend them out the rear for mounting the cradle and other gear.
