Hey Stuart, who is developing build 16 now? Is it the team behind RED ONE or is it a new team?

Since the announcement of Epic and Scarlet i was wondering what the magic team behind RED ONE will do. Will you move to Epic and Scarlet or will you keep on improving and stabilizing RED ONE?

Huh? What was said to incite that comment? People wanting the bugs worked out of the firmware? Or is it because they're not aware of what has been said in other threads? Either way, I don't understand your comment. If the comments in THIS thread were enough to make Jim go on hiatus, I think he'd have more to worry about than build 16.

I'm one of very few that appreciate were we are right now with RED.
They have come so so far in a very small amount of time.
We have in our hands a camera that surpasses anything else in the market place at a fraction of the cost of anything else in the market place.
This is FACT!

Jim is on on hiatus for one reason, to have a rest from the forum of impatient, never happy, whiners.

Not saying you are. but man, this forum is turning into a complete mess full of miss information and people not happy with RED's advancements into the future.
RED has bought us all the future and I for one will be eternally thankful.

Jason Ing

I'm one of very few that appreciate were we are right now with RED.

There are over 4000 and counting who are truly appreciative... they're buying Red. And I'm sure there are thousands more.

Yes, there are whiners, complainers, and pushy people... but there's also a lot of us who are just having a little fun and have nothing better to do then to say silly, tongue-in-cheek, stupid things on this forum while we're waiting. :usd: For example, Gunleik's "om, om, om" is how a monk sounds when he's chanting during meditation... (Or is that just him trying to talk with his mouth full?).
We could choose other forums to hang around, but 98% of us are fans.
Try reading through the thread again and pick up the light-hearted humor. :bleh:

Sorry, I was on the other side if the island. :red_bandana: All sing: " 7 more bugs to go ... We are almost there guys.

To the question of releasing "a stable build xx".. we incorporate lessons learned from previous builds into the next one. Most often the "fix" is a combination of reprogramming the underlying hardware, plus the software that runs on top of that. So if we can fix a bug in a point release we'll do that, but the fastest and cleanest way is usually to fix it in the next release. (This is the reason Build 14 didn't see the light of day)

Will the problem with the shutter and the "open gate" function be fixed in build 16?

Which one is that ?

Colin Hubick
04-26-2008, 11:32 AM
Which one is that ?

The current problem is if the open gate option is selected, and you set the shutter angle to lets say 1/24th, the camera displays that it is set to 1/24th but in reality the camera has set the shutter angle to 1/48th. When you bring the .r3d file into Red Cine and look at the meta data, it is in fact 1/48th, not the 1/24th the camera op selected or what the camera displayed.

So all the material shot is 1 stop under exposed...

This has been discussed with Red already.

O.K. Understood. Maybe yes, maybe no.

The issue is ONLY when you run shutter speeds longer than 1/48 when in 23.98 / 24 fps or 1/50 when in 25 fps etc. This is because of the way Open Gate works (it doubles the sensor frame rate but keeps the capture frame rate the same - so 24 fps becomes 48 fps)

If you are shooting at maximum shutter angle / exposure time turn Open Gate off (which is the default setting anyway)

I would say the ONLY issue is that the camera is reporting one thing while shooting, when in actuality it is doing something different...

Agreed, what I'm saying is it only happens if you have a shutter angle between 181 and 360 and you enable OPEN GATE.

Stuart English
04-27-2008, 05:44 AM
so back to my original question about this being addresed in build 16?

Its not on the original bug fix list, so it might it might not. Meanwhile its an issue thats pretty easy for an operator to avoid.

Don't use Open Gate when shooting at greater than 180 degrees / more than half the frame time of the fps you are shooting.

They're just as sexy ... some even thinner and taller ... but there's something about you ... some unexplainable thing ... won't you please let me know when you'll be in town so I can chill a nice wine and change my sheets? SWEET 16 is a King of Imaging for current RED one shooters.

Mr.BB King did his heartfelt version back in 1973 " Live in Afica ". Chuck Berry is a Rock & Roll kind with his black beat.
