I talked with Jim at NAB (He's a cool guy by the way) and he said we can trade in our RED ONE for $17,500.00 towards the Epic and I thought that was pretty generous of him. I didn't think about it at the time and this might seem like nit-picking (I'm more curious then anything really) but if the CF module is basically mandatory... wouldn't we get $18,000.00 "trade-in" back, or do we get to keep the CF module as sort-of a souvenir?

Have you ever heard the expression "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth?"

Maybe they'll use the same CF Module and you can pull it off the RED you're trading in and not have to buy it again for EPIC. Doesn't make much sense to me that they'd have 2 different CF Modules.

I saw the Epic. CF looks built in. Not the same module.

I know what you mean but at this point I've never been happier with an upgrade and my RED is still worth what i paid! So I'll eat $500.00

you should ask RED to pay shipping costs instead of you paying twice!

You saw a mockup nearly 1 year before release. What I heard about EPIC when I asked about it at the booth is that's it's entirely modular. More modular than RED. It's possible they might not use the same module, but I really don't understand why they'd do that. From a supply/repair standpoint it would seem smarter to reuse the same component.

Before everybody screams off with my head, relax. I think the trade-in offer is more then fair. I was just curious as to what becomes of the CF module. Joelnet, if what you say is true that'll be pretty cool.

I haven't seen the CF slot(s) on the Epic, but there are clearly two on the Scarlet. This would lead me to believe that they're using them in parallel (RAID). Thus a new module.

Look at the problems sustaining writes of even 27 MBps to most CF cards. 100? Forget it. I'm surprised they didn't do RAID in the first place; that's what Panasonic has been doing for years with the P2 cards.

Hi V/finder,
You will probably need a Flash Drive and new EVF for Epic, Higher Data
rates and higher rez monitor capabilities. Can't imagine
they'd still go with the old 720p graphics. So startup will be more like $50K
for a base camera.
Throw in an S.two or another RGB recording device and your up there baby.
You may also need Zeiss Ultraprimes if the sensor gets taller, making all
RED Glass available at the moment redundant.
Many things to be considered with this camera.
I hope RED do implement the ability to record to some kind of outboard Uncompressed Device, otherwise this Epic thing is pure folly.
Second thoughts that's a little harsh, lets just say no where near
the 'value for money' of RED ONE with nothing like it's 'ease of use'.
I'll be renting my Epic, I suggest you do the same.
IMHO Epic is OVERKILL for 95% of punters posting on this forum.
Approach Epic with caution, it's a whole new (expensive) thing.
Cheers Mezmo

Either way, its pretty incredible

yea, maybe you can buy a refurbished RED for 13K then trade-in for 17K to buy an Epic ;-S
