any thoughts on these? would they even work on the mount? how comparable would they be to the nikon 17-35, or a zeiss superspeed?

They will be soft wide open as all fast lenes are. The Nikon won't even focus to normal distances.
The Canon will not mount to Red until Birger has thier EOS mount available.
In the mean time I'd recomend the Nikon 28mm f1.4...
