View Full Version : sleep mode : I just need to know

As I see my number coming up, and since a sleep mode is a definite must and deal-breaking issue (alas !) for my own use (wildlife shooting), I must say I'm very grateful to people at Red for their time, dedication and availability. No way I wish to minimize what Red has already achieved... Red one is a great cam, no doubt.
However, I still find it odd that the issue, if bypassed originally, has not been adressed yet. Of course, it's understandable that priorities must be what Red decides they are, but I do need some sort of informal commitment from the Red team that the sleep mode is to be implemented on the red one in a (near) future build. I just got a seemingly "sore" and ambiguous reply from Jim in person, reading "can't you wait until the feature is enabled, and shoot something else meanwhile". Which I don't quite think the kind of answer I needed to a very simple and natural question and does not quite add up :-) Hope this is no "bad attitude" !! If the problem is firmware, if some future build will fix it, no problem, I'll wait. Red's worth that wait, of course. If not, if the problem lies in hardware, internal board or whatever else, the Red one in its current setup, however ideal (and it is in so many ways) , is not for people like me, and I 'd deeply regret that. Reality has to be faced, however sad, and I must choose the camera I'll shoot my coming doc with !! That's just why I'd really appreciate an answer :-) I've got used to like Red for it's words value. A word is enough for a believer.
Since I guess I'm not alone in that situation, this answer could benefit anyone purchasing the red one for documentary/wildlife purpose.
Thanks for a reply ! Denis

This is something I wondered about too, and asked the question about leaving the camera powered up for long periods of time instead of turning off and re-booting. I've been told that you can leave it powered up for months without turning it off if you need to! So what that means is that you do have a solution to not taking 30 seconds to boot up and missing your shots, only issue of course is having enough battery power with you to see out the day!

I've seen people using double battery plates (no sleep, but continuusly on...)
You'll need a stack of batteries, though.

Thanks you people for replying.
Well, some weirdos like me sometimes spend a whole day and/or night in some uncomfortable hide up a 200 yards high cliff, just waiting for a 1' particuliar shot of a particuliar behavior of a particularly secretive animal species... and desperately need a camera able to "wake up" almost instantly...meaning a sleep-mode, and nothing else in replacement... When it comes to some species, well... it's a lonely job, a very tiny hide...and you just can't afford extra weight for a stack of batteries ! Anyway, the question is : why do we get no information from red as to the likeliness of this feature, when it is DEAL-BREAKING for people like me (I am not unique...) and we have to make a decision to purchase ? Doesn't work if you have camera in an underwater housing 100 feet down on the bottom of the ocean...unless you are very quick :w00t:

Buhot, don't you know that all you have to do is ask your question to get all of the answers you desire? :turned:
So where do we get the real info from then ? :)
Just ask the question. But people here don't ask first, they just assume the worst and hit the "Submit Reply" button.

Denis, I understand entirely, I'm one of those weirdos too!
I get the feeling that a fiarly instant start up might be tricky due to nature of the camera (or computer would be maybe a more accurate term as that's more what it is).
I agree, though, that it would be useful to know a) Is it possbile, and b) If so, when is it likely to be implemented.

Hi Haakon, sure I know, am I not asking now :-) ?? I'm a true believer, I swear, and I've acknowledged the achievement, the availability and patience of the red team, have I not ? I have, no fake, I mean it. This is not a complaint in the usual sense. Maybe I posted it in the wrong place. I do apologize if so. Besides, I'm french, some distance away, and I may understand poorly the nuances in what I'm being told.
I'm speaking for me, and for people like me, I guess, who have been asking the same question. I've read the forum, and found opinions such as "sleep mode is unlikely" and without anyone at Red posting a definite statement about it. We all know we're being listened to, though... I might have missed the answer. I'm just saying that the answer I got from big Jim in person ("can't you wait and why don't you shoot something else meanwhile"), if funny, however understandable with everyone rushing into busy Red people with his own "extra" little concern, was not exactly the one I needed. In fact, I shot my sister in law meanwhile and it did not help. I certainly know that the answer might well mean "this is already fixed, dude, we're already a long way past it, why don't you trust me". In time, I understand Jim and all the committed people at Red must resent posts minimizing what they have done, pointing out the very detail as a major drawback, or simply displaying misdirected distrust. This is not the case here.
First, because the feature is not a detail, but seems a very natural one. If not basic, at least very helpful, and a drastic issue for documentary and wildlife use. The lack of such a seemingly "basic" feature in such a "dream" camera is surprising, suggesting it is simply not feasible in the foreseeable future. Second, because with Scarlet and Epic showing up, one may "fear" (or, better, simply understand if told so) that making the red one suitable for documentary use is not a priority. Third, because I trust people at Red, and Jim first. No hurt feeling, no bad attitude : the team is great, the camera IS and HAS to be the killer I've been dreaming for , Jim does have a vision and the means to make it real, and I ordered my Red one long ago and I'll be waiting if I have to wait.
I'm just expecting a straightforward answer so I can make a wise decision regarding the camera I shall shoot a "starting soon" documentary with. The fact is that I don't think I - and people like me - have not got that kind of answer yet. Period. I just hope it will come. Period. I'm confident it will come. Hence this post. This answer could be : "no way on the current hardware, get yourself some other cam" (an answer I'd sure hate !), or "simple firmware problem, update is coming soon enabling sleep mode, be confident to complete the deal", or whatever the truth might be.... BUT : "shoot something else" (since I am a narrow specialist), or "we're looking into it" without further detail as to the possibility/likeliness of a sleep mode ever being enabled on red one.
I like your footage, BTW ! Denis

Our bottom line - we want to deliver the finest camera that we can for all applications.
For Wildlife usage I think that wish list would include - 23.98 / 25.00 / 50.00 and 59.94 project frame rates, HD and cinema image quality, print quality still frame extraction, intervalometer based timelapse, 100+ fps frame rates, 2/3" zoom lens compatibility, multi-channel sound, laptop based image preview / rough cut editing, extended record durations, remote start / stop, pre-record and "instant" boot up.
All but the last two items have been delivered already in our release firmware, and we'll continue down to the end of this list to the best of our ability.
At the moment an alternative strategy will need to be considered if you are on an extended record application. A good quality marine battery may be one of those.

Presumably a PAG Belt would give you a pretty good run time too. I fully appreciate the weight issue though as I'm very much in the same boat, but for fairly static situations like long waits in hides I think it'll work.

sounds scary when you summarize it, but its true....this cam is so king kong like, and still getting better.

Along those lines, will the Red One support voltage metering of non-red brick batteries, Stuart. So that the camera at least shuts itself down if the voltage is too low.
Many thanks,

Don't worry Denis, you are doing everything absolutely right. :-)
I was just being sarcastic because Jim seemed to be annoyed that people weren't asking questions (?) before making assumptions, and yet many of the questions I've asked on the forums go completely ignored. I don't expect that Jim should have to sit on reduser all day fielding responses, but given that this is their direct line to the huge customer base they have (and growing), it would certainly benefit them to hire someone to get trained on their products inside and out and be a PR guy on here. And if that individual doesn't have an answer he/she can go find it directly and get back to us as soon as possible. The irony is that by not doing this, customers are left scratching their heads about things and then they go off making predictions and assumptions when they don't get answers - the very thing that Jim wants to avoid in the first place. And I'm with you, they don't have to share information about everything that's asked of them if they don't want to, but at least a response of "we aren't ready to release that information yet," would be a lot nicer than making us feel like we're talking to a brick wall.

it sure was ! didn't you contribute some "moments" ? Was "that" only conceivable one year ago ? Is anyone capable of operating "this" camera and making it deliver "this" kind of footage left with anything to wish ? Seriously ? Well, not me at least... Ah, yes... a sleep-mode, and no fuss : however splendid the image is, we still need to have something left inside the frame when the camera's ready to shoot.
I'm with you in all you just said better than I did. Denis
