May I ask that ? Will RED Digital Cinema may work out some fair messages to protect the RED one holders in different regions to make RED revenues in using RED one ?
Even Hong Kong is a " FREE PORT " with no import tax but I think it's a fair deal to all RED one holders to protect all our local investors/talents/DPs/Engineers who use their tools with a Great Faith in their early stage.
I believe RED Sales headquarter has all our S/Ns with our country of origin, and I do aware that RED one reservation cannot be transferable.
I am personally think that " No RED One holder " like to see other regions RED one holders to direct compete their Business to say I have RED one early than you so I can get a higher chance to win the Equipment driven deal.
Please correct me if I am wrong, like the good old service centre to protect the inflower etc.
Just my carefulness to all Red one holders in a " Fair Trade World ".

Might be nice but I think its completely unrealistic and absurd to expect area protection from Red. No other company would do that. Its never really been about just using the gear as an ends by itself that will undoubtedly end bad every time. Instead its about how does the gear help you sell yourself and your skill set, as an individual. If you rely strictly on the gear then when the gear becomes a marketplace commodity you'll be out of luck and possibly a job. Just my take on things.

In the US that will be an illegal restraint of trade, and it should be. If I can get a job in your area I will. If you can get a job in our area you will. Live with it!

This is a ridiculous suggestion. We are hopefully leaving the whole protectionist nonsense behind us.

Yep, this would be illegal in most modernized areas of the world these days. Although, governments around the world may do their part to "protect" business interests of their own people by imposing taxes / duties or tariffs on outsiders hoping to come in and provide the same services.
To suggest that RED restrict delivery or use of their product to control markets is absurd.

hahahah wow!
heres a new question i am forming in regards to this original question..
can we keep RED strickly in the hands of real DP's/operators and out of the hands of people who think they are DP's or operators?

Hehe... I can see it now... "This is my RED One. If you wish to rent it, please submit your current demo reel with $50 application and reel viewing fee. ...Don't call us, we'll call you."

What's the difference between a real DP and someone who thinks they are a real DP. I'm just curious as to where you draw the line?

We were just goofin'. Of course a real DP would never catch on to that. :clown2:

LOL - Maybe Red should not be exported to foreign counties?! We want to keep our American tech advantage. ;-) What if Hong Kong films could look as good as American?! Hollywood would surely be at risk... LOL...

Not only is Graeme from Canada but the Red Cine Interface is laid out with two workflow choices both graphical. One is set up like a hockey rink and you lay out your workflow like a two on one to shoot 4k Redcode Raw. The second is set up as a sheet of ice on a curling rink where for downsampling to 2K you lay out the graphics as a double take out with the shooter getting the roll to the four foot just in front of the T line.

Curling? What freakin hoser put that in there? I thought the hockey interface was good for all operations and formats, eh?

Actually, you can legally work in the Greater China area (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macau) much easier than a foreigner could in North America. The labor law and immigration law are much looser there.
But this is beside the point. In response to the original poster's suggestion, I think we should just ignore it. It's one person's perspective. I have never heard of any colleague in the production community from that region with a remotely similar idea.
True talent will survive and flourish in any market. Equipment or protectionism is not going to help the inept.

Even better let's limit it to LA and Seattle. :P Jim has a vested interest in both right?

Reminds me of the old cameraman's joke:
Q: "What's the difference between a flare and a highlight?"
A: "£500 a day!"

Better idea: if you see anyone filming in your town with a RED One, please share with this forum how it is possible to do that! I was under the impression that when using RED One we would be recording...where do we attach the film mag? LOL...

No worries! Just thought I'd get us laughing at ourselves. We're all guilty of using anachronistic terms to describe our work - its human nature and our comfort zone. It's going to be awhile before everyone says they're "recording" or "shooting" with RED One - if ever. Even if a RED One project is output to film at the end, if it is acquired digitally, edited digitally, mastered digitally, but output to film, is it categorized as a "film" per se? I don't think so - its a digital cinema project.
I noticed in a recent James Cameron interview that the reporter kept asking Cameron about his "films" and "filming" in reference to Cameron's digital cinema projects. Cameron's answers always referred to "digital cinema", rather than taking the reporter's bait and simply calling them "films".
Here's to "recording" and "shooting" with RED One!
