Been eagerly await this video to get released. Very pleased with the outcome of it. Joseph Kahn really nailed the direction of it and Taylor was super professional and really got into the filmmaking ideas we were going for. Mega talent there. I was impressed.

Lot of Ronin usage in this one. Shot in 2 days just outside of Manhattan in New Jersey. This is all OLPF2 (Skin-Tone/Highlight).

Enjoy peeps.

Were you the DP on this? It's really very beautiful work on your part, and works perfectly with the song. Joseph really brought out some powerful acting from her. Poetic, pretty, awesome work all around.

Ah Phil, didn't see your post in the other section. Thanks for posting it, but YouTube finally uploaded the vid and I can get it in Indonesia! I haven't tried looking into the Occulus Rift stuff at the end of the video. Not only did we have a majorly ambitious number of shots we wanted to get in 2 days, but we had to accommodate a 360-degree interactive product placement "experience" for Amex, who were funding a chuck of the budget. Some cool possibilities there for future content. The idea was that viewers could literally explore the room that the video was in, and then go off and "walk" around the rest of the mansion and then happen back upon the "video" in other parts of the house.

Phil, just wait, we are sitting on a piece (in vfx/post madness) that is on a whole other level. I'm literally pulling my skin off waiting for it to drop. This Taylor vid was a fun little fashiony frolic, I'm about to kick you all in the cinematographic nuts with the next one.

im starting to really see the how much the STH OLPF stands above the rest of the digital crowd. Such a nice cinema feel. When I saw this videos look, I just though that you should be shooting features.

I saw some of the BTS pics you posted...do you have any with the rigged up Epic and Ronin?...How did the Ronin perform? If no pics, which I understand given cell phones were off limit =) could you tell me if you had the MB on the Ronin? Thx!...having a tough time balancing my Ronin with MB, and often find it much easier (and quicker) to go without...but then I'm without filters unless I find a way to "tape" them onto the lens...and that's not safe at all.

Again, great job! Hope you get to +50 mill views sir!

I'm hoping the bts video is posted soon, but to answer your question, I've had no trouble at all with my Ronin and balancing with a full setup of wireless video, remote focus and a proper mattebox with filters. Here's a pic of us using my rig on the shoot...

Joseph and I freely switch off operating sometimes seemingly for no rime or reason, sometimes I'm more concerned with nailing the placement of a handheld light or bounce, and knowing his operating style, it's not a problem for me. Other times Joseph insists on pushing dolly so I'll hop on and operate. It really depends on the job and individual shot.

We we did some very long lens running and circle-track type shots, all on the Ronin. I'm talking 135mm...

There are only like 4 standard dolly shots in the vid, and they all appear in the BTS, ironically.

Chris, in hindsight do you think the Ronin is too heavy for anything more than a one or two day shoot, or did having Joe to swap out with make it negligible?

That is crazy; 54million views! Nice! (Personally, I still like the Eminem SOTLs intro vid more though.)

Wow, what a treat. Fantastic all the way around, creative directing and writing (hell of an ending and payoff), just gorgeous cinematography, and Taylor is an awesome actress. Bravo, Chris!

Few questions if you don't mind? How many days of production did you guys have, and how big was the crew? Also, I've been using my Dragon and Ronin combo a lot recently and loving it; what did you use for your power supply (I made an AB battery belt with a long lemo cable that i just tap into and fly with, I haven't noticed any stabilizing or motor problems from it. I just got sick of using Redvolts due to their short supply and, to a lesser extent, their weight), and what lenses were you flying on there? I've been digging the Ultra Primes on it with a Preston, but weighing it (along with the Lightbridge) dfinitely takes some prep work ahead of time to balance correctly.

This is my favorite video of the year. Great work, thanks so much for sharing :)

I use a Gold-Mount on the side of the camera with a janky aluminum mounting plate I fabricated from some scrap over to an obsolete electrical device… That allows a Gold-Mount plate to be mounted to the side of the camera and I can still handle the weight mostly. Unless the majority of the shots need to be at eye-level, which gets tiring very quickly. Operating inverted can help, but it's a little goofier to operate that way. The end result is that I'm on the group buy for the L'Aigle Exoskeleton as I despise Easy Rigs.

Wow! Great stuff!
Did you shoot this on Re-housed Canon FD's?

That photo I posted of my Ronin setup was from a different job, btw… And yea, that was a rehoused FD done by Artur in Poland. I have a full set of those as well for my Ronin setup as they are very light weight.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the EasyRig - Ronin combo either. I rented one for a five day commercial shoot I directed and ditched it half way into the first day when I saw how much shakier it was making our operator's footage.

As for the side mount battery, have you tried Cinemilled's new extended arms so you can use the QuickBack Gold mount? I'm excited to try it out: https://vimeo.com/111154673

Christopher Probst
12-01-2014, 09:54 PM
I think for what they are, basically a resleeve of FD optics, they are great. I frequently use his 100mm and 135mm to extend out traditional K35s when I'm shooting with Camtec's K35 set (which are among the nicest set I've seen). I haven't seen the new generation of rehouses Artur is working on, which are a much more involved mechanical rebuild inside with increased focus rotation. I'd like to see those though.

Wow .. a passive Exoskeleton - completely missed that - thanks for the link.

My scriblings

+ I think think there maybe a market for an 'Active Piston on an Active Universal joint' designed to stabilise the item ontop in XYZ space with a residual load weight of 250g.
+ Anchor point on From of Vest. Power on Back of vest (going a small way to reign in centre of gravity)

+ Second Exoskelton part would be the transfer of weight down to your left and right feet. Actively transferring a proportion of the weight under/to you left and/or right shoe. Active Front of vest.

+ Active could incorporate active lockout of a pneumatic / tension system. Second Exoskelton would needs a low power cpu to coordinate.

Now I am thinking

Use a passive Exoskelton for the top - switching to as light materials as possible. What about a CF mesh around Boron tube?
And use a passive Exoskelton to transfer weight to your shoes....

... is it time to wake up yet?

Would have been nicer to be shot in 3D since you use it with the Oculus. Then have both Taylor and the dude 3d scanned and 3D mixed in the Oculus perhaps jumping out of a 3d flat screen into the Oculus 3D environment.

Flawless otherwise.

It looks really nice. And maybe I imagine things but it got some Canon character to it. So my guess for lenses (as you also mentioned above would be K35's or FD's) especially when you say you shot some of it on a long 135mm lens... as the FD 135mm f2 is a true gem. But normally on productions of this caliber, people tend to go for far more expansive and modern glas even.

So atleast let me know if I'm wrong :)

You are not wrong.

Just cracked YouTube's All-Time most viewed Top 100 videos… AND 300 million views in less than 1 months. Pretty sweet. Now if we can crack into the Top 10 that'd give me 3 there!

My daughter has added 500,000 to that count.

Today the video just passed 500 million views on its main YouTube link AND broke the previous 97-day record in doing so held by Gangnam Style... Not that I expect to take down Psy's impossible 2 BILLION view dominance, but it's cool nonetheless!

That's almost a million bucks in youtube ad revenue.

A little update on the little video that could...

Yesterday Blank Space rose to the #4 position on YouTube's All-Time most viewed Top 100 videos... As of this writing it's at 980 million views and is on paced to be the 4th online video ever to crack the 1 billion view threshold by this weekend. Pretty crazy, especially in the time frame it has achieved this in.

Christopher, I really love your work on these recent Taylor Swift videos.

What shooting mode are you using on Epic Dragon - 6KANA 6:5 to get the full sensor height?

Just received my ana lenses and trying to get my head around all the crazy aspect ratios. Any snippets of wisdom would be massively appreciated!

No.4 on YT's most viewed videos is quite a feat, congrats!

Cheers!

Well, 1 Billion + 504,000 at the moment, but who's counting!?

Congratulations man. It's insane how fast this has climbed. Everything really came together for this video.

Thanks Phil, yea it's a perfect storm of ingredients!

Oddly enough, if you source the video directly through Vevo, they have it tallied up to 1 billion, 12 million and change... Not sure why the YouTube count is always less, but I go off that count just to be pragmatic.

For those of you that might not have caught this.MTV doesn't include in the ceremony or televise any technical awared winners, even the directors of the "videos" they are celebrating at the Video Music Awards show... But Taylor is a total class act and brought Joseph Kahn on stage with her for one of the 2 wins Blank Space recevied last night.

Look for the shout out to Jarred!

1 Billion views...
What does 1billion views translate to in youtube revenue? I know it's fuzzy math, but 1 to 3 million bucks? It's good to see that music videos can make the labels/artist some money back.. That can only mean good things for us that crew on music videos.

Totally agree. I have to imagine Youtube revenue is encouraging at least some additional investment in music videos by artists of all shapes and sizes. Just knowing you may be able to recoup some of your costs is a new, and welcome development.

Well Blank Space just crossed into the #2 position of all time views on YouTube (1.23 billion views and counting)... It also ranks as the #1 video of all time on Vevo. Not too shabby! Now just another 1.2 billion views to take down Gangnam Style.... Come on swifties (and a few Redusers), you can do it!
