Anyone taking these or familiar with other classes? $300+ is a chunk of change but the production looks high quality and they cover a lot of subjects.

Any thoughts? experiences?

I found them very useful... Especially if you sitting around waiting for your camera... They go into as much detail as you need, and are available to communicate questions or concerns via and very active online forum.

I love FXPHD... I signed up for 4 classes!

I took classes from them about the RED and it was very helpful. Once I had the camera in hand I felt very comfortable with how to use it and more important how to work with it in post. The classes are comprehensive and go into the gotcha's and the things to look out for with the camera. I think it's money well spent. You can take a couple of other classes and get a lot for the money.

I see they have a SCRATCH course this term... That could be useful too.

Yes, taking Jeff class - very useful as he goes through more the creative stuff. Wonder why Mike is always wearing his hat even indoor?

For the course they allow you to download a full working version of Scratch with a temp license. I'm not taking that course, but for anyone interested in learning it that's pretty hard to beat.

I'm happy with the courses I've taken at FXPHD and not just the Red ones (though I'd highly recommend them). $300 may seem like a lot, but you get 3 ten-week courses, plus an extra course they call Background Fundamentals, and access to the forums where you can talk with the instructors. Overall I think it's a good deal.

Strange that the site does not mention May '08 courses and is still featuring April '08 courses considering April ends in a few days.

its the term that starts in April I believe. April classes will keep going for 3 months or so.

I think...

I took their courses in the past and was very happy with them. (I don't work in VFX so I don't take em now.)

For $300, you get an overwhelming amount of material (it's hard to keep up), professionally-shot footage you can work on, and the level of the instruction is very good (particularly in background fundamentals).

but the production looks high quality
They are VFX wizards. In the other areas (e.g. audio) you can hear them get better at it. But that reason doesn't really matter because you can hear what they are saying and it's not particularly distracting.

If you want to know about VFX, their courses are very, very good. I don't think any film school or college would come close to the quality of instruction they give. And fxphd goes out of their way to shoot some professional-quality footage that you could use on your reel.

They're great. This is my third term and every term I end up signing up for an extra class because there's so many great classes available!

A friend/colleague of mine took some courses with these guys, and in recent months (since graduating) he's been working on the new Batman film, Hellboy 2, 50,000BC, the follow up to Elizabeth, etc

I am alway looking for new training, I think it is the most important thing you can do to stay up with the technology, trends and updates.

I am on my 8th term with FXphd and I can honestly say it is the best training out there at any price. These guys consistently under promise, and over deliver. Of course I am a VFX guy, but they offer many production courses, and the Red courses and forum interaction is awesome.

I second the motion...This is term #2 for me...All one needs to get and stay up to speed...Many levels for one and all.

These are in depth programs created by top notch guys. Very entertaining and informative.

Also might add that you can test two classes from a wide variety of choices before commiting to which ones you really want and need.

I hope to see something from Speedgrade offered perhaps next term since they really seem to be on top of their game and really the perfect Indie Solution for the price point...In my humble opinion.

Best,

DogDay.

This term, you also get a 90-day license of SCRATCH, so that is worth the price alone to me.

They have offered three different Red courses. If you don't have a camera, it is a nice fix until it arrives.

You get 10-weeks worth of content with each course. Each class is rougly 45-minutes in length.

I am on my third term with them.

Yes, taking Jeff's class - very useful as he goes through more the creative stuff. Wonder why Mike is always wearing his hat even indoor?

Glad you like the class. I believe Mike's hat was a fashion statement.:detective2:
I'm more of a baseball cap guy and can't pull off fashion hats.
I find the RED classes very usefull. As a former sports and news cameraman Iki's and Sony betacams knowing the mechanics of all the Rods, and seeing it a steadycam rig gives the post guys insight. I may never own a RED One but have been on the recieving end of the footage. I may get a Scarlett.
It is important for Post Guys to know there is different software versions avaiable in the cameras, that it continues to version. And some may not be aware that a rental house might not be on the same version as a owners RED. For the money I think these classes are gold.
Telling you tip and tricks so you don't learn them the hard way.
You can join at any time and just play catch up. But if you want to be at the top of your game, even if your not hands on in all aspects and at least sound like you know what your talking about it's a quick way to do it.

www.fxphd.com FYI
For those that take the Scratch class there in a 90 day educational license of Scratch available for you the learn a full featured Scratch with the class.
Scratch runs on Windows and a NVidia card. And looks a bit like Red Cine.
More specifics are on the site.
Scratch allows you to do secondary CC, Shapes, and vector CC which Red Alert and Red Cine is only Primary CC..
Mikes classes handle RED ONE operational, configurations, add-ons, workflows,
data management, accesories.
The Scratch 201 class I teach handles Scratch and RED specific create approaches, workflow, and some stereo discussion with footage Mike shot.
http://www.fxguide.com/fxguidetv.html
Ep. 26 has a interview with Ted and New NAB stuff
Ep. 25 has a interview with me about Stereo and Scratch
The above site is free.
fxphd.com is the classes

happy shooting,

So you get a 90 day trail license...Can you be specific here about what the exact hardware to run that on would be...It cant be for everyone if everyone doesn´t have that hardware and if you adjust to run a demo the next step from there is to what???

Is it possible to get whats done on that demo out or is it confined and only allowed to be specifically used for the classes exersizes?

Thanks.

hit up Luki aka Lucas Wilson at Assimilate

luki from this site.
He will give you specs and he can give you trial keys.
Windows and high end NVidia cards are ball park for now.
I believe Lucas had a official post.

DogDay.
Price Pethel was my color teacher. He has been the best that happened in my career.
It would be great to have MikeS spend time with him to do a Speed Grade class.
Or I may take the time. Any time with Price is a good time.. He's the best.
I'm sure as soon as the Red Node is more public Iridas will do great things.
Until then Red is owned by Scratch.
Ride it. Till the next train comes.
best,
