Just in case it wasn't clear... all RED ONE owners have 1st crack a getting an Epic when it is released. All RED ONE owners will be given the opportunity to get an Epic by trading in their RED ONE (at full $17,500 value). You can trade in your RED ONE, keep your RED ONE and buy an Epic, or pass altogether... in the order RED ONEs were shipped. We believe in taking care of the ones the believed in our program from the beginning.

That's very considerate, but along with this I would think you'd want to get these into the hands of some big budget pictures ASAP.

...oh wait, ----maybe the early birds could rent theirs to the productions!

That is an incredible and generous offer, Jim.

Don't take this wrong, please, but is there the other option like Red One has now: Instead of saying "pass" when our number comes up, can we say, "not now but later" and then get worked back into line if we can come up with the extra dough. :)

I will be sad when I decide to trade for Epic...but no for long. :)

Nice to have met at NAB Jim, enjoy those stogies.

After the release of Epic, we will offer a sensor upgrade to the RED ONE. More dynamic range with the same specs. New Mysterium X sensor. Should be middle of 2009.

So it'll be the same specs of the new Mysterium X sensor, but Epic's sensor is physically larger, correct?

Correct me if I am wrong but I would think this would be incorrect. They would both have a super35 sized sensor. I guess the question is; Are there going to be three sensors? 2/3 for 3K and two s35s; one with 4K res and one with 5K. And will the 5K downsample or have a 5K native file size? May be a tad early for these questions but what the heck, might as well ask.

Bob

Darren Orange

I am pretty sure and please do correct me if I am not correct, that the following might be true....

2/3' Sensor X = 3K at 120fps
S35 Sensor = 4.5K at 60fps (currently only recording at 4K at 30fps)
S35 Sensor X(future upgrade for Red One) = equal to the above but better dynamic range
S35 Sensor X(Epic) = 5K at 100fps

Question are we likely to see an increase in usable increase in bit depth, or will the dynamic range improve inside the current bit depth?

Will we see any change in bit depth that might be directly related to the increase in dynamic range?
It seems from what I've read in most in cases people are pretty easily getting close to 10 stops from Red One as is now. I know under the right testing cases we can see over 11, but seeing 10 in day to day shooting is pretty awesome.

Jim, For my own needs, the smaller weight of Epic is already a significant factor. But simultaneously would like to retain some nice things of Red One when upgrading. Especially, if possible, it would be great if one could still use the Red One and Birger lens adapters with Epic. It's not that much about getting new PL-lenses, but instead, about the very need for short lenses, macros, and much longer teles than 300mm.

I would have thought the one useful/essential feature would be compatability with the One's accessories (eg batteries, mounts, rods, etc.) all the things that add cost to the base price. I think that would make people very happy.

Jim

This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. In my very humble (I'm a writer by training, not a DP) opinion dynamic range is the only thing that film has over the Red One at this point.

(well, other than a nice shoulder, but with more dynamic range you decrease the frequency of blown highlights and reduce that problem)

Nicely done.

Even so I don't reply much to your posts, I do read them all, and this forum, just was not the same lately, so glad to see you posting again, a home w/o his "HOST" is an empty home!

Now as far as you great offer on the credit for our RED ONE cameras for EPIC, this is nothing short of WOW!!!

But as I think I'll pass, RED #349 will stay with me for good!

But I'll still take several EPIC cameras as soon as the will be available, as well as several SCARLET cameras.

Will there be a limit at first for us RED owners, for how many EPIC and SCARLET cameras we can buy?

Again, great to have you back Jim.

Btw, finalizing the design on the fixtures, so will e-mail you soon with details, and thanks for your interest.

Dynamic range is really the last stronghold for chemical 35mm film. It's great to see a lot of emphasis at Red on getting over this final hurdle for digital.

Epic = Film Slayer.

Jim,

Have you decided if the EPIC will have the possibility to use SLR lenses with an adapter ?

I think it is a must.
Not only for budget considerations, but also for weight.
...and one of the EPIC interest for me is its lightweight.

Good call for the upgraded MysteriumX for the RED ONE.
...exactly what you said two years ago. Upgradable.

thanks

Thnx JJ.

My Red One is a piece of history.

Good luck getting it from my cold dead hand in the far future.

Thanks for the generous trade in offer, but I think I will have to buy an epic.

How about a discount for current REDONE owner instead.

I have too much money invested in support gears to let go of my REDONE.

Thnx for everythings.

Could I suggest that the trade-in cameras be donated to various film schools? Might as well start 'em young.

This might be a nice use for the pre-X versions of the initial cameras as well.

I know my alma mater (Ryerson U. in Toronto) would appreciate a few!

Jeff,

I think you should start a film school (can you do it in Ashland, Orygun?).
I ran the tech ops for the one at UCLA for five years or so and would be glad to help. I'm also good at advising co-eds on their projects. Let me know how I can lend a hand or two.

VFS - Vancouver: I graduated in 2000. We shot in SD and on Arri SR1s at the time. We got our final reels on VHS! Now they're up to HD, super16 and DVDs. The good thing about this school is that they offer positions to street kids and others less fortunate than those that can afford the actual tuition. WOW!
What a RED ONE could do in the classroom!

Matthew Greene
04-30-2008, 09:36 PM
I attended VFS in 1997, We shot on 16BLs, I got a crappy VHS transfer too but if your cinematography instructor was Ricky Choi and you were friends with him you might have gotten a print of your film from Alpha Cine.

I still think film (especially reversal, even if it's super8) is a better teaching tool for cinematography. It teaches you to use a light meter, expose consistently, correctly, the handling of contrast. If I went to film school again today I'd rather be learning on film than on digital. I learned to cut film on a Steenbeck and even though I had NLE experience, I truly believe it made me a better editor.

With regards as to what happens to the traded in Red Ones, I don't see why they wouldn't be sold as "overhauled" Red Ones.

Craig Meadows
05-01-2008, 03:43 AM
When other manufacturers enable trade-ins a lot of previous generation items are sold in lower tier tech markets. Avid for example would sell older meridian systems taken on trade in south and central america while selling new DNx systems in the states, europe, etc. Or the older systems are shelved and used for parts to support older systems before EOL.

I have seven RED ONE cameras now. Put me down for eight EPIC cameras. Since you are graciously taking care of the RED ONE adopters who want EPIC in order of when their cameras shipped, then Offhollywood is the only one in line ahead of me. He has said on another thread that he wants six EPIC cameras. Not bad eh - a total of 14 EPIC cameras wanted by just the first two RED ONE owners. I'm salivating over the possibilities with EPIC. I'm also salivating over Scarlet - I'll buy at least ten Scarlet. Then there's RED Ray - my head has been swimming with ways to integrate RED Ray into our facilities.

The 'trade in' cameras are rebuilt with build 35/36 to shoot 1080p ONLY.
Sold to Sony who 'rebadge' them, then resell them for $120K+ as the
new 'RAWalta' 5.25K1080p 35mm FOV Digital Cinema Camera. Many unsuspecting RAW heads purchase them before the SCAM is uncovered..
Offhollywood buy two.

Hi Jim, my name is Jon Myers, I'm a Steadicam operator. I was looking at the pictures of the Epic and I had a couple of questions. Are the proportions of the camera going to be close to the picture? Would you have some kind of guestimate on weight? To me it would seem that if it's going to be much lighter than the RED ONE and shorter (front to back) we might have some balance issues with it being too short. I have flown the RED on several occasions and it flies very nicely, at least I think so. Thank you for your time.

Jon

Jason Sinclair
05-15-2008, 06:07 AM
Shorter is better for other things like motion control rigs. Can't they redesign the steadicam or ad weights to top stage? I'm sure the weight comes in at 8 pounds.
