Ive got a RED hooked up to a RED LCD, an Astro monitor and a Panasonic BTLH1700W HD LCD.
Im recording 4K recode 36 to hard drive using 2.40:1 as my aspect ratio but ive found that the framelines generated by the RED dont match the Panasonic or Astro generated framelines for 2.40:1.
Any reason why?

just curious - do you have any pictures to illustrate somehow how it looks on different monitors.

thank ypu,

The RED-ONE shows you 10% extra area around the image being recorded - thats the mid gray overlay, so the frame guides would appear to be bigger on the external monitors probably.

Hi Stuart,
That figure would tally with the difference im seeing give or take a percent. If thats the case then the RED framelines are useless, no? The aspect ratios on the astro and panasonic monitors im using are SMPTE standard framelines.
If the RED isnt using SMPTE framelines whats the point in having them? Can anyone from RED comment on this issue please? Id love to have this resolved before i shoot tommorrow!:)

No its the other way around. The preview video that the RED-ONE sends out the HD-SDI port is 10% bigger than the recorded area .. hence the guides need to be 10% smaller than you might imagine. (and they are on the RED-EVF / RED-LCD)

Hi Stuart,
Im completely lost. Why is the image RED is outputting from its HDSDI 10% larger? How do i get the signal coming out of the RED HDSDI to line up with the panasonic and Astro monitors 2.40 framelines? are the viewfinder framelines accurate?
Ive attached a picture to show my problem.

The monitor-generated framelines are for a normal HD frame. Red outputs a 720 frame, but shrunken down to include the look-around area.

You can't use the monitor-generated framelines with Red's preview outputs. (until someone includes some Red framelines in their monitors).

Correct. Use the RED frame lines, they have been calculated to take the look around area into account.

Ahhh...that makes sense (sound of penny dropping). It would be helpful if in one of the future updates one of the outputs could be revised to output a normal HD frame so that its compatible with existing monitors - the 10% look around is only needed by the camera operator not the client/director/dp. And multiple aspect ratios in the viewfinder are a must! One isn't enough unfortunately, especially for commercials!
Thank you Stuart and Crewpix for the help and explanation!

The monitor's frame guides will be correct when playing back from the camera, as this (obviously) does not include the un-recorded look around area. This does, however, introduce an issue that the image on record and playback are two different sized. It might be useful to have an option to toggle playback between "fill the 720p frame" and "window" (same framing as during recording)
