My partner and I are hitting NAB 2015 this year.

Any rumors of REDEducation or workshops?

Looking forward to meeting all fellow REDUSERs :)

Just look for my tag

I'll be there and wouldn't miss it for the world. It was great meeting many Redusers last year and a load of other people.

I'm pretty sure I'll be there. BTW, I'm hearing some rumours about Lomo introducing some new anamorphics at NAB.

Adam Montville
01-05-2015, 02:29 PM
Speaking of anamorphics, I hope to see more SLR Magic's Anamorphot 2X. Not the best to have adapters, dual focus and whatnot, but it's the only thing us poor collage students can afford! (I would start buying anamorphic primes if I could get them for $2,000 a piece, but even that's pushing it for me, personally.)

Lomo or Illumina... or Hawk? Isn't Hawk = Lomo after '89? Either way, that's a prettttty awesome rumour.

I gonna try to get there this year... though I say that every year and end up with massive scheduling conflicts...

Eric Santiago
01-05-2015, 03:32 PM
Oooh I like rumors ;)

I for one would like to know what RED will be bringing to this years event :)

Also, how does one submit footies to RED for 2015 reel?

Hi all. I've finally decided to go for the first time to NAB!! I've cleared my schedule, got the pass, all that.

Can anyone give me some pointers, primarily when to get there, what hotel to stay at, what not to miss, etc. I would truly appreciate any tips and I'm looking forward to meet some of you! Thanks!

Curious to hear more about the Lomo Anamorphic rumor... where does this come from???

Many years ago, when I worked for Digital Processing Systems (DPS), NAB was considered the largest trade show in the world. Does it still hold that title? I'm not sure if "largest" meant greatest number of vendors or number of visitors, though.

Based on the tech whispers going around, this years NAB should be a very good show. RED will have a lot of competitors stepping up to take a swing at them and the companies making software/hardware and other stuff will have some exceptional product offerings coming out next year.

don't know about this NAB, but yes, they're working on the new line of anamorphic lenses, i just got reply from LOMO's vice president, he was nice and even came forward with the question if 'we' have any wishes or concerns they would keep in mind during development. My only request was - please place them in the price range of CP2s :)

How much does NAB 2015 cost in order to get onto the general floor, including the Red booth? What type of pass do people generally buy?

Thanks,

You can usually find sponsors and partners that offer free Floor Exhibit passes (meaning no conferences or lectures). Just google NAB free tix and a few should show up.

Eric Santiago
02-24-2015, 11:26 PM
Yes so many vendors will get you a free pass.

One from DotHill (http://registration3.experientevent.com/ShowNAB151/Default.aspx?CustomerID=0dc1a34b-e013-4ed0-a7e2-e1c3bbd49e4e&CampaignID=1076&Signature=12CFD6B746A2B8A176D1AC9251B42BE85F97EB10 4CA818FF16A2995ACC5E719B)has the code attached I do believe.

I will be there, going to be shooting some time lapse of Veags for Emotimo and displaying it on their 4k TV next or same day. Swing on by the booth and check out the TB3, it can hang with a scaled down epic when if not in the wind. TB3 is an amazing product for motion controlled time lapse and comes in at a really good price point.

Jeff Kilgroe
02-27-2015, 07:21 PM
For anybody who's attended NAB before, there's usually an Alumni registration option that gets you free exhibits pass anyway. But yeah, most vendors give out free codes. I probably have a few dozen proliferating all the spam that shows up in my inbox.

Here are my cardinal rules for NAB: (guys feel free to dispute or add to or whatever)...

1. The best way to get to and from the Airport is the shuttle. (Bell Trans or other $7 + tip). …unless you're loaded, then take a limo.

2. Go out and buy the most comfortable pair of walking shoes you can find to wear while you're walking the exhibit. This is MY #1 rule. Don’t go to NAB without them.

3. The exhibits are open for 3 and 1/2 days. You will need that entire time to cover all that is there.

4. Whatever you think your trip to Vegas is going to cost… Double it.
(if you’re on a budget, you can break this rule if you’re really thrifty)

5. If you are on a tight budget, stay in a hotel that’s close to the convention center. I’d recommend the Riviera. It’s not the nicest hotel by any means but it’s budget priced and it’s close.

6. Take whatever star rating your hotel is rated at and subtract AT LEAST one star. That goes for ALL hotels.

7. When traveling up and down the strip, take the monorail if you can (you can buy a multiple day pass) or take a cab. It’s WAR on the sidewalks of Vegas. DO NOT WALK THE SIDEWALKS (unless you're just a masochist, then go for it). I wouldn’t call it dangerous. It’s just that people have zero courtesy.

8. If you like to gamble. Set aside the amount of money you’re willing to lose at the tables and be prepared to lose it.

9. IF you do chose to walk: When reading a map of Vegas, whatever you think the distance is from one point on the strip to another, you're wrong. It’s twice as far.

10. Seek out the good restaurants. The bad food in Vegas is really bad but the good food in Vegas will be a highlight of your visit.

Jeffrey Loewe

I'll be there the 13th-15th. This will be my first NAB! Look forward to checking it out and meeting everyone.

Any suggestions?

The last two times I just ate wherever and didnt get sick :)

Sticky toffee pudding at Gordan Ramsey steakhouse at the Paris
90-day dry aged Bone-in rib eye for two at Carnevino (If they have the 240-day dry aged, worth trying too)
Bacon wrapped shrimp at Jean-Georges in Aria

I have eaten at most of the high end steak houses. I try a new one each visit. Can't eat two nights in a row anymore though. :) SW is nice at the Wynn. The Cut is okay, far from my favorite. Prime is nice. (I like the butter dish that has some mashed potatoes in it) STK is loud when the DJ starts.

I don't eat buffets as they make me nauseas.

There is a café at NYNY called Americas that has chicken wings I like. The skin is nice and crispy.

Two of my favorites are both located in the Venetian Hotel:

TAO http://www.venetian.com/restaurants/asian/tao.html

and

BOUCHON http://www.venetian.com/restaurants/french/bouchon.html (just really like the atmosphere here)

I also like India Oven. ...hole in the wall at the north end of the strip.

I wish they still did All-in Film. That was some of the most fun I've had at NAB.

Bouchon is a Thomas Keller restaurant. Wonder how the Vegas location compares to the one in No. Cal. I do enjoy the bread at Bouhcon Bakery.

I would recommend Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris hotel. Really enjoyed it last year.

I guess I'll have to try out Bouchon, it looks nice!

Yeah Bob - but did you read this one quote from the article:

Price tag is expected to be high – similar to the AF101: around $3k-$4k

Oh my! That seems pretty low given the specs...

I like how the rumor mill says that "price will likely be high, like $3K TO $4K "... Gotta love that !
So nice to be able to throw my GH4 in a trash can and buy a new camera for such cheap prices.
For my run n gun needs, this maybe the best NAB yet.

I'd love to meet any other RED + FCPX users there. I'll be there m-w and visiting the FCPXWorks Focus event, Media Motion Ball and Supermeet.

Any other events I should hit this year?

Rumors have started popping up about excellent 4k (C500 was always sharper than the other 4k sensors), improved color and slow motion, XAVC but no prores, a groundbreaking high dynamic range mode, and superior autofocus.

Of course, those who know about both the Weapon and C300 Mk II seem totally uninterested in the latter... which is very intriguing all around.

I don't think it's going to be a competitor with the Scarlet Dragon, though obviously both companies want the high IQ and improved color we've been seeing. I have no idea if the rumors are true. The C300 Mk I was hugely successfully because it targeted a big market that the Epic and Alexa were too high end for, but for which dSLRs were too low end. The Scarlet is a toned down Epic, but the workflow isn't, so those low end clients didn't want to work with raw (again, this is tv, where time is money, hence all the Alexa and C300 use on tv). Likewise, the C500 bombed because who wants a scaled-up C300 with a proprietary workflow instead of a Dragon or Alexa?

I don't expect that to change, although it looks like Red is planning to introduce prores to appeal to tv, and that could be HUGE and Canon might be looking to compete with the Alexa directly with the C500 Mk II. So the products might have more overlap, but no way will the C300 Mk II shoot raw. If you're happy with what you have why change paths. That said, I don't have the storage or horsepower to handle the kind of stuff I shoot while shooting raw, so... Canon appeals to me for that reason, at least.

I'm really curious where these products are going.

Anyone know of any 10 or 12bit UHD panels with SDI inputs being introduced this year? Hopefully at price points that could at least theoretically be ROI-ed - please…

Cheers - #!9

Canon are coming out with two new 4k panels - a 30inch and a 24 inch - great colour range - sdi/hdmi inputs - can daebayer canon's codec but both are ridiculously expensive to own as owner operator I think. If I'm not msitaken the 24" is around 18k which is way too much for me - I'll either get an LG or FSI or both.
