Nonsense

I've heard the image one gets on a monitor while shooting on RED is not accurate to the actual image recorded. Can someone explain this a little? Should the image one gets on the LCD display (or otherwise) just be thought of a representation of what the camera is recording? - unlike a regular HD shoot where you can actually see exactly what your are getting.

thanks.

That's basically it, the image you see on any of the monitor outputs (LCD, EVF, SDI, HDMI) is just a representation.

First off, it's lower resolution. Then you also have to take into account that it's a real-time conversion of the RAW sensor data with a specific "look" applied to it. Currently that look is based on a REC 709 color space and gamma curve. In the future, we will be able to create our own "looks" and upload them to the camera.

The camera records the RAW sensor data and various metadata from camera settings to go along with it. Very few options you set in camera actually have an affect on the data recorded. Obviously, frame rate and shutter speed are hard set, but white balance, gain, etc.. are just metadata that is included in the recorded data. You can set your white balance, exposure, etc.. in post when you "develop" your RAW data.

Thanks Jeff. Yeah, Im beginning to get a much better understanding of the way the camera works and how all the metadata doesn't effect the "undeveloped" image - cause its raw - and that you can make all those choices in post, like, color temperature and asa, but I don't understand how you can choose your exposure in post. I mean, aren't i choosing the exposure on the lens? - thus cementing in my DOF choices?
