First off, I know Red doesn't support auto-(anything)...

My dad and I were talking about how to do this aftermarket and it seems that any focusing program needs to be able to "see" the image to be able to make adjustments. Usually this is the camera itself. Well since we're SOL on this with Red, why not an aftermarket autofocus that would take an HDMI tap off the camera and look at it and focus with that. Maybe it could even somehow work with the "magic" focus assist they are working on. Now I don't mean continual auto-focus but rather push button auto focus, every time you push the button it focuses. That way you could even have focus points like on a DSLR.

This would help greatly in any run-n-gun situations or solo operations.

Okay, so anyone tell me why this wouldn't work...

On a DSLR autofocus makes a lot more sense than on a movie camera. When you push the button of a DSLR, there has to be just ONE magic moment in focus and not 24 p/second or more. RED will be for a lot of people who never shot on 35mm more or less a great adventure to keep wanted objects in focus. Even with a DSLR there are a lot of situation where autofocus not work. So for RED it is better to know your lenses by hard or to have one of the very rare focuspuller, that will do the job.

If you get a solution, please let me know Shawn. For run and gun, fast moving objects, long lenses -some of us would like auto-focus like 100% of the digital still photo world - even if they have to pick the zone left, right, center, up or down. Not all of us have focus pullers. Auto focus is not a sin.
