View Full Version : Delay...

We are very happy with the progress we are making, but I think that serial numbers 12-100 should expect a slight delay in receiving their cameras. The complexity of this project dictates that we make sure we deliver a solid platform and that will take a bit more time. I see no reason why we still cannot deliver a finished camera to all reservation holders by October, but the 1st cameras will be delivered a short time after NAB.
It should be clear that the 1st 100 cameras will NOT be full feature enabled upon delivery, but they will be easily updated with software and firmware upgrades as we go along.
The delay is minor. We do not expect it to be significant.
Just so you know.

Thanks for the info Jim.
Shall there be the same delay for the next reservation holders? I am the #111* as you probably know...
EDIT -- * And the #647 too! BTW, is it possible to advance any estimated date? Only for reasons for scheduling. Because with that announcement related to the first 100, I couldn't figure out very well if the beginning of the delivery would be after NAB or one/two months after April, that is, June?

It is likely that we will post a timetable for delivery at NAB for the 1st 1500 cameras.

Hi Jim,
Is it safe to say those of us in the mid 100s will be ready for collection before October?
EDIT
Actually meant, before August

Hey Jim, thanks, I appreciate the heads up. I'm already in preproduction on my first Red short, slated to shoot on June 16th (I was assuming I could get my Red #27 by end of May), does end of May still seem reasonable? If I need to bump my shoot that's fine.

Eagerly awaiting for that schedule...among other things.
Many of us plan projects depending on the delivery date.
Tanks for the update.

I don't see any problem with that. Even Space Shuttle is often delayed. It's a high-tech. Delays are part of it.

As an aside Jim, are you in a position to comment as to whether RED will be on view at subsequent USA Trade Shows this year. I am thinking Cine Gear in June for example.

Jim, can you email the productionschedule to us reservationholders that canīt come to NAB. All info that you release at NAB would be nice...
Thanks!

Hi Jim
Would a short time be counted in Days, Weeks or Months?
One man's short is another man's eternity.
I, like everyone else, am anxious to get the camera and am dying to hear news of when it will ship so we can book my flight :-)

You totally could have gotten away with announcing at NAB, "And we'll be shipping the first ones in a month" (or whatever it is), and nobody would have said "Hey, wait! You implied in a post on Reduser.net that they might be shipping slightly earlier than that! I'm buying a Sony!"
Many companies won't fess up even when they're going to miss a firm publicly announced delivery deadline. The approach you guys are taking is a refreshing change.

Much smarter to do it here ahead of time than on the NAB floor where the news could be used to overshadow news of the features and footage.

The first 12 cameras = BETA TESTERS.

Now I can understand why the april fools day thread was taken down. Too close to truth?
But regardless, I also don't think this small delay is a big deal. We all knew there where going to be some small delays with the first few, especially the feature sets. I have sometimes waited more from B&H for them to send me a backordered item (and they charge the whole amount upfront).
The first 12 cameras = BETA TESTERS.
I don't think I would consider the first 12 beta testers. Generally beta testers get pre-production units. Just because Jim is releasing de-featured cameras doesn't necessarily mean that the cameras aren't production units. I don't think the first 12 users would want any less of a camera than the other 1500.

If I understand Sanjin correctly, I think he meant beta testers as in the first numerical-12 cameras (ie #1 to#12) which includes Boris and the rest of them that are not for sale to the wide public. Maybe... or not, but it came across as that.
Brook Willard

Boris et al are not production units, they are test beds. RED ONE #1 will be the first production unit.

"Although most of the intellectual processes of testing are nearly identical to that of review or inspection, the word testing is connoted to mean the dynamic analysis of the product—putting the product through its paces. Some of the common quality attributes include capability, reliability, efficiency, portability, maintainability, compatibility and usability. A good test is sometimes described as one which reveals an error; however, more recent thinking suggests that a good test is one which reveals information of interest to someone who matters within the project community.
Refer to the ISO standard ISO 9126 for a list of suggested attributes and criteria."
Quote from

that should be also for hardware testing.
If something is wrong they should report to the RED and even if it is a serious error they must sent camera back to the RED headquarters for the corrections. I am sure "The Magnificent 12" signed some kind of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the RED. They are reporting to the RED and of course NOT to all of us at the forum. It's so clear now who've got the priority. Maybe after the NAB more forum reviews from "The Magnificent 12".
When the official camera shipping start you can use your warranty in the case of any camera error...

I think Peter Jackson has RED ONE now for sure, but Lucas still not because he is "Sony Boy" from his early days with CineAlta. But who knows?

Considering how aggresive RED is in getting Red One to market, it makes sense to keep the very earliest cameras limited to a few people, and preferably ones you have a personal relationship with. Jim has 1-5, OffHollywood 6&7, Gibby 8, Jarred 10.

Hi Jim,
first let me thank you again for your vision and fantastic products that are in the final stages at RED, it is great that we all be enformed at NAB for our delivery times, but I have kind of a situation and even if I just purchased a Canon XH-A1 last month to begin some prep work, I vould be greatfull if you could give an idea for wen I can espect my first camera #349, I know it will be a bit much longer for my other two (851-852).
Thanks very much,
Ciao,

Oh Man Billy sucks to be you #13 - no wait I have reservation #1438?
The number 13 interestingly enough is tied to the days of the Templars. It was the date of the King's order to massacre them all in part due to his enormous financial debt to them. They were the first international bankers/ATM's and held enormous wealth and power - let alone the conspiracy theories regarding the Catholic church.
BTW - great web site trailer - look forward to seeing your Red Cinema work.

:glare:
13 was NOT lucky, why?
The other reason that 13 is considered unlucky is because it was traditionally "God's spot"... and no human was supposed to occupy it.
e.g. There was Jesus and his twelve disciples. Jesus (the supposed only son of God on earth) got to sit in seat thirteen. The Knights of the Holy Grail also had 13 seats at the Round Table... but one (the Seat Perilous) was always left empty in case God wanted to drop by for a chat. Prior to all that, back in nature-worshipping pre-Christian times, there were the twelve houses of the zodiac (thought of as the gods in the "heavens above") and the Sun, which was thought of as God/the source of life, was in the center of it all at number 13.
So Billy, you may find that RED 13 mysteriously shoots 8K... but one day a guy in sandals and a white robe is going to run down the street and say, "Buddy! That's mine!!!"

Many companies won't fess up even when they're going to miss a firm publicly announced delivery deadline. The approach you guys are taking is a refreshing change.
Many companies would ship the camera with faults to keep to a deadline...
Checkout this page on (mostly) mark one Sony f900 faults;
http://www.hd24.com/cinealta_users_pub_cat.htm
Many faults were know by Sony but they didn't have the infrastructure, care, and ultimatley respect for customers to do anything about it.
Meanwhile many users were losing shots/shoots/money suffering a problem others new existed or had found a solution. A disgrace!
This went on for two years until they bought out the mark 3 camera.
Many rental houses kept problems to themselves as well.
No question that RED is starting out on the right foot in respect to customer communications, I'll give them a break if/when things don't go according to plan.

Don't ship until your ready. I would rather wait until you have had another three or four months at the very least to really test and tweak everything.
