The RED ONE has a rolling shutter which is notoriously bad for motion tracking. Has anyone done a variety of motion tracking tests yet that could be shared? (or the results at least could be shared.)

Evin did that garage test really early on. don't know where it is or if it's helpful. Someone can provide i link i imagine.

Yeah i tried to search motion tracking but even "motion tracking" gave me every post that had the word "motion" - you can imagine, a lot of posts.

Just to keep people from FUDding here, it's rolling shutters which are notoriously bad for motion tracking... not the RED ONE.

The rolling shutter issue isn't much of an issue as of build 15. Only in very extreme situations [or at tight shutter angles] will it reveal itself.

I guess its that time of the month where people start bitching about the "rolling shutter issues". FILM DOES THE SAME THING PEOPLE. Since this has been brought up with the Red I have noticed it in every movie I've seen that has whip pans in it.

Mark,
we have tracked many shots with both Boujou and in Smoke w/o any issues.

Hey Greg - that's exactly what I was hoping to find out. I didn't mean to moan about rolling shutters, but my FX team started getting worried about a project we have where nearly half the shots have motion tracking.

im possibly gonna be cutting a film that has a ton of vfx and a ton of tracking so its good to know that people have been successful in that area.

We didnt have any excessive moves in the shots that I recall...I'll see what I have that I can post. I'm on a job so it will likely be next week.

I have had a lot of success tracking in shots as well with RED and many other VFX guys the same. I can't post any examples without permission but wasn't there a VFX test that someone motion tracked a bald guys face to composite spikes in order to kill butterflies?

my brother did with total success, we love it for VFX work, clean as hell, and lots of resolution. what more could you ask for?

rolling shutter is a non issue 99% of the time

We're using the RED on SciFi's latest TV show, shooting tungsten-lit greenscreen for a large portion of the show. The results are stunning (in the best sort of way).

Yep, works well - have done both standard 2D After Effects tracking, and loaded a few tests into Mokey (2.5D planar track) and pfTrack (3D track). If you saw the Ringo video at NAB or on Red's reel there was a bit of AE tracking in that.

No crazy handheld yet.

Love the lack of "film wobble" - you know, when you get a scan of a locked-off shot and there's a few pixels of up and down jitter that you have to track...

We've done a test with Red One, Sony EX-1 and Canon HV-20 shooting an electric fan at short exposure times. The RS effect of the Red is very low, while both EX-1 and HV-20 show about the same, strong distortion of the moving blades.

Hope this helps,
