Isn't it funny that can set the focus to 12ft on a 50mm lens :-)

That depends, do you live in a place where the only shipping method is via fishing boat?

Metric 305 mm long x 160 mm tall x 132 mm wide
As a comparison the Sony HVR-Z1 is 325mm long from the end of the flarehood to end of the camera body, 165mm high from base to handle and roughly 120mm wide to the bulge on the right hand side.

You do need to attach some sort of lens to Red though, unless you are going with just a pinhole! I don't know what the smallest useful lens might be. ...also storage and power source.

That's awesome... when I attempted to measure it myself [based on the PL-mount barrel size on the renders] I came up with 321mm long and 170mm tall.
Thanks for the official[ish] specs, Jim.

This RED's for you:greedy:
BTW, passing this camera thru customs as your everyday, tourist hand camcorder is gonna be one of those guilty pleasures. Just make sure the lens on it is the shortest possible-a 50mm Nikon or shorter.

It would also be useful to know the distance between the optical axis and the base of the camera (as well as the built-in rod centers) for designing accessories, etc. Jim?

That's what I like to hear...
And as for determining the height from mount to the bottom of the body, you could approximate it from the renders much in the way I originally approximated the size of the camera. As for specific [to the millimeter] measurements? Bring a ruler to NAB. :)

Working this week with the Arri 416. I pulled out the old tape measure and it seems like the Red One is nearly identical to the 416 with a 400' mag on it!
Cheers,

Jim is there any way you could post a simple line drawing of a straight on view or a straight on render view (there isn't one in the renders). I have been telling people that the RED ONE would work very well in a cylindrical housing, particularly because most of the width is stepped down as it grows wider. A simple rectangle at these dimensions isn't very helpful, unless we have a straight on view to figure where things stick out. Doesn't seem like a straight view or line drawing would give away to many secrets.
Thanks, Mike at AquaVideo (RED #206)

Stuart,
Is it possible to just post an AutoCAD 3D drawing of the camera exterior showing all mounting holes, screens buttons, dimensions etc. so any of us who have our own unique vision as to what the accessories should be, can make our own? We are just a simple download away from you. Then the machinists among us can go crazy or help out the local fab guy.
This would be a huge aid to getting a third party support industry started!!! I'm thinking here of the Bubble blowers getting an underwater housing together. Integrating the camera to our Aerial mount, building a cover for use as a crash cam, Some other specialty accessories I have knockin around under the ole beanie. I would think that the general accessories you have outlined will be the vast majority of the accessories sold but some stuff is better done by ops/fab artists.

TJ:
Thanks for asking for exactly what I really would like. This would be greatly appreciated and we all would understand that it is not absolutely final so using the info would be at our risk - but I think if they are really this close to shipping cameras it has to be pretty darn close to final and would be very useful for a lot of us - not just the bubble blowers.
Pretty please with a RED cherry on top?

Is the final body actually complete yet? I notice the image on the front of Red.com is slightly different to the one listed on the Pricelist page, the first being the more recent of the images to go up. It might be they can't put anything like CAD drawings up yet because it simply hasn't been 100% finalised.
They wouldn't want to be responsible for someone making a mistake if the designs they put out weren't the final design, also they probably don't want people manufacturing parts such as the cage and rails system before their own is launched, and why not afterall, it's their product so it's only fair. In their opinion if a third party wants to make a competitive component then don't give them ammunition. It would be useful certainly for other areas such as TJ indicated but the other reasons probably put them off from doing so, just a guess though!

I'm guessing that the most recent picture we saw [with Jarred and the two cameras] is what we should expect from the final body.

If you hope to see finished cameras 1...100 in May or June there better be some bodys getting machined now!
