View Full Version : *** RED N' GO Pelican Camera CAse***

Hi guys,
since for my experience the best cases are the Pelicans, I will be finally designing a Pelican case, likely the 1610 or 1620, with Antistatic Laser Cut Foam inserts, and a pre formed circle the size of the RED 90mm Logo, so that any one can then purchase the RED Logo and apply IT to the case.
I'm a little Meticulous some times, and have been accused more then once to be too organized, but I like the gear I use and I also like for it to stay as new as possible for as long as possible, but I want also be realistic to the needs of the various production applications and build a case which will fit the needs of many.
The idea is to design a Pelican case to fit a RED ONE camera with RED Bottom Plate or ET RED/ARRI Bridge Plate, the two RED Top Mounts, Top 12" Rods, ET Top Cheese Plate, RED Top Handle Extension with Top Handle Mount (not the handle as pic below), RED EVF mounted on ET EVF mount and the ET Break out box.
To me this set up is the best solution for a "RED N' Go" case which obviously will have several other storage spaces for Battery Pack Drives, LCD etc.
In this thread I like to get as much feed back as possible and together find the best solution for this case which will have to be manufactured in quantities over "100" to go in production and maintain an attractive price tag to all.
*Please Note: This is not a substitute for the RED offered Pelican case, which I love its design but its configuration does not provide me with what I need, and I hope this thread does not in any way comes across as a competition product as it is not, and I only like to offer a different solution to this community.
Sorry about the pics of the Pelican 1610 below ( my 1D went for a swim, so I tucked this with my iPhone)

I would be interested. Let me know when you think it would ship. I may have to buy something else soon though. Dang! the RED EVF is HUGE, doesn't seem that big in other pics. :)

Hi Ketch,
Sorry to hear about your 1D! Hope it dries out!
I would be very interested in this. I don't have my camera, so I don't have any advice, but for me, the more items that can be placed in a single case the better. I don't like carrying 20 cases if I can do the same with 4. Also helps when flying, as the number of cases is just as important as the weight.
Anyway, keep us informed, I will definitely be interested.
Cheers,
Jim

Yes Shooter the EVF it is kinda BIG! And it fills like it too, but its quality is just something to be amazed:w00t: at Every time you look true IT! The turn around shouldn't be too long once we figure it out.
Thanks Jim, every one went after the model, what for I don't know, She can swim just fine, but the camera didn't!! Oh well!
This is one of the reason I like to build this case, in trying to get a great configuration and limit the number of cases, which they do get numerous, but at the same time I don't wanted to get to big, as it must be easy to lift and load as well, I'm a believer of having an extra case then having a HUge one, and kill your back (or in my case my F#$@UP knee):)

:) Guess it proves that, as good as they are, Canons still can't walk on water...

I'll just share a case design thought I had. If you had a proxy model of each red Item, then someone could very easily and quickly arrange the items and send it off for custom laser cutting. A new case for a new set of items would be arrange-able in a matter of 10 minutes. Basically people could just send over their list of items and an idea of where they want them, the arranger sends back the cut sheets for the laser cutter. It had crossed my mind to have one of my 3D guys offer this service, but we seem not to have much luck when leaving the production realm for business, so I just offer it out to the community as an idea instead.
But since RED does design via CAD, perhaps they'd be willing to export proxies for this purpose for people to use or have their friends use to design their cases. would help a great deal.

Thanks for sharing Mark,
what I intend to design here is a case with a center stage, were the fully build camera stands strait up, as in the pics in post #1, then on each side, the foam cores will be in various levels, each with handles that can be lifted with one hand, as to make easy to reach for items stored in the compartments below, while holding the camera on the other hand.
Basically a stacking trays of laser pre-cut foam, to fit the various gear pieces in order of importance to the individual shooter.
Some might like to have at the top, next to the camera, the handles, LCD, and batteries, others might prefer to have the charger and the batteries, stand on top to easy access and put them to charge first thing as they arrive in the studio, other might prefer to have their tools on top and so on.
My design will try to find a solution that will be expendable and recunfigurable according to each individual need, and even to be moved on top or bottom at home before each shoot, when knowing ahed of time what would be needed for easy and fast deployment once on location, leaving items of lesser importance on the bottom.

I'm definitely interested, keep me in the looop if you can, I'll also subscribe to check up on updates if you can't get around to people. I can't really think of any input, looks like a pretty solid plan

hey Ketch
does the handle come too close on the 1610 with the lid closed in its current configuration in your photo? what base is on the camera in the photo and how thick is the foam beneath it?

I'll say that closes tight, and that likely I will consider the 1620, in this same configuration.
Mounted is the ET 19mm Arri Bridge Plate, and the foam on the bottom is harder and of a good thickness for protection.
But I'm also considering the much smaller and much lighter 1550.

You should really have a minimum of 1" uncompressed soft #2 density) foam suspending your sensitive gear. 2" is better, especially for shipping.

Yes Mitch, you are right, and this is why I have to consider doing this with the 1620, as the current used 1610, is a bit too tight.

Hey Ketch,
Good ideas for the case, but I just received a 1620. Are you considering selling just the laser cut foam? I think a lot of people would be interested in this option.

Unfortunately, as there hasn't been in off interest this deal it is not going forward at this time.

I've been researching just a solution like this, and then I just found it here, smack on Reduser :)
I'd be very interested in such a ready-to-go solution.
Or does anyone know if PortaBrace is working on a Red solution?

Ouch, Ketch ditched it as I was (ever so slowly) typing late at night.
Bummer.
PortaBrace to the rescue?
