I dont find Flighcase and Raincover on the pricelist.
Is there third party manufacturers which will offer this in time, will red offer them ? Anybody has a solution allready ? How Red will ship the cameras worldwide, in a save way, to third world countries ?
I like the Arri Cases. Tectra or Peli Cases are useful for accessories but not for the body, imo.

I found this out from a wildlife camera team but also confirmed it from experience and testing that thick plastic bin liners/rubble sacks (with a hole cut in them for the lens to view through) provide a far more practical wet-weather protection than the more traditional fabric covers.
The added bonus is that when back at base all one has to do is shake the water off the plastic bag and it can now be folded away(and takes up very little space) whereas the fabric covers need hours to dry off (esp in humid environments).
That said though the fabric covers that have some form of padding provides a degree of protection from mild knocks that all cameras will be exposed to. (helps keep 'em looking new which is great for possible re-sale)
I'm interested, why do you think that the Peli etc cases are not suitable for the body?

I made a rain coat for my dvx.. it was super sloppy and retardedly done.. but i am not a seamstress... But i do plan on designing one around the RED and will have it manufactured professionally.. i might have a few more done while im at it..
it will definatly be a rubber/plastic combo with flexible thin plexi or plastic for the VF

The peli cases and others are good, i agree, but custom made flighcases for RED would be better. In my personal experience over the years i found out that a very strong case can save you many thousends over the years. I also have lots of peli cases but i use to store only batteries, chargers and other accessories. A good case also helps to keep things in order.

Best rain cover is a clear plastic leaf bag and bull dog (secretary) clips. You can cut the bag to fit what ever the configuration of the camera is at the time. It is clear so the 1st AC can see everything they need to on the camera and you can just toss the bag when the rain stops or make a new one the next day. I know this may sound a bit strange to anyone who has not seen or done this before but I have worked a lot in Vancouver and it rains a ton there. I have had expensive custom made rain covers that come with the camera and found a leaf bag works better.

Finner,
Great idea!

Yes you are right finner, this is a very popular and excellent raincover !
But every AC has also an official raincover in his bag. I would like to complete my packages with a red raincover in porta brace quality, if the AC prefer plastic bags in some situations, its fine for me. Workarounds are good. Businesswise a raincover is a rental item as other accessories. It can make money over the years. It should be listed in every proposal.

Every AC I have worked with in the last 18 years throws the official rain cover (if the camera comes with one) on the top shelf of the truck. It collects dust there until the project wraps at which point the AC throws it back into the camera case to go back to the rental house. IMHO I would not recomend anyone buy an expensive "official raincover" unless they just have money to burn and want every accessory possible.

Maybe you cine guys can get away with wrapping your rig in a garbage bag, but in the field on a mobile set up that would get ruined and ruin the RED. Besides the problem with moisture getting trapped in the bag and not getting absorbed, a fabric cover helps protect the camera from knocks and act as a sound blimp too. I have lots of experience sitting in snow, rain, dusty (African micro-fine dust that penetrates any seam and opening) environments trying to protect the camera and gear, and had a custom made cover that covered the entire camera and was sealed up. It was an easy design and would be worth it to custom design something that suited your particualr needs.
My Gore-Tex camoflauged cover had a clear window over the controls, double zipper along the top, velcro along the bottom seal, a hand opening with elastic cuff, openings for microphone attachment and XLR plugs, viewfinder cover with elastic and velcro, and a rollout cover for the lens with velcro to attach it around the end if needed for extended periods.
We also had an arctic bag that was insulated and white instead of camo.
However, if you are a cine shooter, just toss a bag over it.:turned:

I have in fact used this method.. works well..
the raincoat i made was literally made from a raincoat.. i went to 99c store and bought a clear raincoat and some duct tape.. works great..

I think a run and gun situation would be better with a trashbag.. its quick and easy.. and besides.. the point about cloth being a sound barrier..
Red is silent:)

Plastic works in a limited sense, but the cover I had worked in every situation from exreme cold and moisture to thorns and cactus and dust (in the desert where I live now), was camoflauged (the initial purpose of the rain cover actually) and cut direct sunlight from heating up the rig too.
The folks who will get RED will I think prefer a comprehensive design like mine over a plastic duct tape version
This is the first I have heard that the RED is silent, does that include all the controls, buttons, etc.?

i agree a nice rain cover would be nice. im just saying those who dont want to spend an extra 150.. but Yes the Red has no moving parts unless you go for the red drive and not the flash option. but even still.. i dont think the drive would make any noise that would really be picked up.

.... i dont think the drive would make any noise that would really be picked up.
Part of what attracted me to RED is the promise of a pre-record and the quiet factor, plus the abitlity to re-configure it however I want, that is a major plus.
Maybe I will make up a prototype cover after NAB and see if other people are interested.

Hah! how big is your rig?
I don't know, maybe that would fit for YOU, but I was thinking of something a lot wider at least. Is there a magnum version?

a garbage bag works in a pinch, but seriously we are talking about a camera package that is typicall worth at least $65k. If you can afford the camera you can afford a proper cover.
This is what we use:

Pelican 1690.
It's exactly 80 inches external dimensions, which is the cut-off for some international flights. You will get dinged for oversized (and more likely than not) overweight luggage.
I have fit just about everthing into mine, with some room to spare.
I'll try to get a pic posted soon.

This has always worked for me for my still cameras:

http://www.visceralpsyche.com/photography/Canon_KissX_ZipLoc_Bag_Cover2.jpg
$1 ZipLoc bag with a 77mm circular hole cut in the front to fit snugly around the lens end.
Add a small bag of dessicant in there and you're pretty much set for rain and water splashes.
I imagine you could get away with something similar for Red with one or two holes cut in it and elastic bands wrapped around the open bits to hold them to the protruding stuff.

I am working on RED raincover. I'm a parachute rigger so I've built various ZP jumpsuits, parachute repairs, etc... I've also done some cool pouches that will attach to the RED camera cart.
Right now I'm just researching different materials. I've found some amazing stuff, and I've integrated ballistic nylon into some of my pouches.
More later...

Sounds good Chris, if it's of a good quality and reasonable price I'm sure you'll have a few interested parties here. Keep us updated.
