Why bother "trusting" either. It's meta data. If you are doing a job where color precision needs to be that spot on you will more than likely be doing a grade of some kind.

use color meter to set lights ...

Unfortunately I have found digital cameras react to color temps and spikes much differently than color meters and film. My personal opinion is the best color meter you can buy is a good DSLR. As it's far closer to what the camera will actually see. This mainly applies to scouting.
On set I can't see them being very useful anymore unless you have a second unit doing a prelight and the Red isn't around.
Also they are very usefull when complaining to rental houses about bum HMI's.

This sounds crazy, but my cellphone camera works really well. Sometimes I like to match the image from camera to the one on the cellphone. I know it is inaccurate, but I have learned a lot about street lighting and weird mixed temperatures that I see unexpectedly.

i didnt use sekonic color meter but i am happy with my gossen :)
