View Full Version : AVID offline --> FCP online preparations, how does this sound?

Hi.

Excuse me if this has been answred already, I'm not too much around AVID stuff, but here goes:

I have a project which is to be cut on an AVID (don't know which, probably adrenaline) and then will be prepared for online with the FCP --> Crimson --> DPX workflow.

So how do I make this foolproof?

The editor says he wants DV files... I thought maybe DNx or DNxHD would be a better idea? But I can of course give him DV. I'm more conserned about workflow after cuts.

What I've planned for, is that he exports an OMF and an EDL of the project. I can import the OMF with Automatic duck, and then re-linkl to the RAW files.... That is: If the AVID doesn't mess up the filenames on import. Which I don't know.

Any ideas appreciated.

Gunleik

I've done something very similar in tests... Import into Avid via Metacheater, cut, omf from Avid to FCP via Auto Duck, XML to Crimson then use FCP to pull any lists needed. The tests seemed to work okay.

Now we're cutting the real project. A lot of work-arounds but with Avid there's no real choice right now....

You should be able to do this today. If you have a Mac then make Windows friendly QTs (that's assuming the windows codec keeps timecode but if it's QT then it should) and make the ALE from Metacheater with them and use them for importing into Avid. Right?

I think there is a problem with quicktime on Windows that it dont keep the timecode.

As i understand, only on Mac that you can edit offline in Avid and go online after that on the same plateform.

If you use Editblog's inctructions it should work fine (we have work that way on several projects and keept the timecode)...

When open the QT Reference file just click the counter track and see if you can get the timecode track ... if so then you should be good to go on windows.

this frame is from Mac but it will look similar.

Why wouldn't you just import the footage (QT) using metacheater and Avid for mac and then, if you want to edit on a pc just import the project with the appropriate mxf media and voila. How are you going to lose timecode like that? One of the best features of Avid is it's cross platform capabilities. Now getting back to FCP is a whole other deal.
