Red Ray will be around $1000. My understanding is that you burn a normal DVD-ROM in a computer with a new CODEC and software package yet to be announced (not REDCODE) and it can play back in REDRAY. In addition, you can play R3d files from a Red drive or CF card.
At least this is what I've heard, someone correct me if you have better info.
Pretty cool box!

The question is - what is it going to play it on? The 4K monitors and 4K projectors are way out of reach for all but few lucky ones...

My understanding is it will output all the way down to 720P or something, not just 4k. So plug it into whatever you have!

Remember, Jim likes to take off in a plane with no wheels and build the landing gear enroute to the runway we're all supposed to pave by the time he gets there. 4K display is on the way.

I would prefer to see 4K projector for edit-suits - read: something reasonably small, quiet and under $10K. Since RED is Digital Cinema Company - viewing footage on a projector is more natural then on a monitor. I am not saying that I don't want 4K monitor - I would gladly have both (few of each to be precise), but I have more need for projector and there is plenty of 4K monitors coming up in 2009 to consumer stores to choose from...

Yes. The specs so far have said that it will down rez all the way to 720p including all the formats in between that and 4k. That's one of the big advantages I think it'll have when it comes out. You won't have to burn separate HD and 4k versions of your product. Just burn it at 4k and if you happen to be hooking it up to a 4k projector then you'll get all the beauty of 4k. If you've only got an HDTV (hehe only) it'll play fine on that too, and probably look a lot better than a Blu-Ray too.

Did anyone mention how some one could get the software to actually burn the r3d files to the discs?

It would be nice to know how some one could get the software that burns the r3d files to a DVD so that you can actually use it. When will it be available for download? Will it be a cross platform software, PC & Mac?

I wish it still can be played on 480p because CRT TV is still great for Blacks and Contrast. I know RED hates HD let alone SD though. lol:sorcerer:

My new Eizo actually looks better than my old Sony Trinitron when they are both calibrated side by side, even down in the darkest shades.

Regular DVD and CD playback backward compatibility would be cool so that we wont have to have many players also.
