View Full Version : NAB and Murphy's Law

All the executives at our facility who don't know doodly squat about Red get to go to NAB this year! All of us working slobs who dream in Red and have every last scrap of info available and battled away to get the institution to reserve a Red, have to stay behind and sweat it out in the salt mines.
That's Murphy's Law NAB style!

Don't worry about it. I won't be going to NAB again this year either. It didn't stop me from making my reservation last year, just slowed it down a bit, or seeing what was going on. There will be plenty of info to glean anyway.

I think the people at Sony making those 4k projectors will probably be having a little party or two on Red's behalf. And all of those people making those nice HDTVs that we'll watch Red footage on... oh, and maybe the Sony computer department too... oh, and also the Blu-Ray guys and gals... oh my bad, guess it's only the people trying to sell F900s and F23s... I agree, that bit will be pretty hilarious. Hope Sony doesn't fire all of the nice scientists and engineers who worked on developing the early HD stuff, though... all those engineers who sand kicked at them by everyone in the 80s... poor guys, they worked hard for decades and now CMOS sensor technology is much easier to do and they get pegged by a new company at the last mile.
Not that I'm complaining. It's great for us filmmakers.

It might have been a simple miscommunication...but you don't think that Sony is very happy about red do you?
And don't get me wrong.. I still have SONY love..just not when it comes to their $100,000 cameras.

I completely forgot about that incident. So Nab will be filled with intrigue...
I also wonder how many people will show up at the Red booth to "try" to argue with Jim on why Red sucks... I remember a guy in another forum was desperately trying to argue that Red One is only 1K in resolution. :pirate:

I concur with Jarred. And between him and Hugo (I assume he'll be joining us) I should think we can keep order. Or rather, they can.

Ah, yes. "Why can't we all just get along". Like many others I will be at the booth to bathe in the Red glow and anticipate the 4k future. If there are nay-sayers around they will be wasting precious space.

I can picture it now... The words "The Red Booth" will acquire a completely new meaning... because of all the blood spilled. :gun:
EDIT:
P.S. By the way Mike, you have a great blog. It has helped me a ton. As soon as I finish financing my Red purchase I plan on using the "donate" button on your site.

I agree, it's the $100,000 camera department that's spoiling everything. I can quite imagine that the "high-end" camera department is trying to exert their influence on the 4K projector department to not show Red footage, etc. But overall I still think Red is good for Sony and most of Sony must secretly be very happy about it - for one thing Red footage will look noticeably better at 1080p than 720p whereas stuff shot on Sony cameras excepting HDCAM SR will not get quite the same bump up (because you're hitting into the max res of the tape before you hit 1080p). If they could only get their camera department to be good sports, though... sad.

Bruce i think i read here on this forum or over at DVXuser that Jim Jannard has bought /aquired his own sony 4k projector. So no worries on that front.
Jarrad there will be dull aspects in the red booth....when NAB ends/closes. Ps who gets to sleep in the red booth ha ha.

Have you guys heard about Pana's new 500 camera? P2 multiple frame rates, and it's a turn key cross over camera (I.E. SD and HD, all flavors).
Going price with viewfinder: $14,000.00
Why am I bring this up? Cause I own a Panasonic 900 and I WAS going to buy the B4 mount for RED, but did not really want too ($3,500.. Ouch).
Now I am thinking try to sell the 900 for 9k-10k the money I was going to spend on the B4 mount will almost pay the balance on the 500. Then I will have a decent (It's not great, only 600,000 pixels on the chip) broadcast camera for ENG, talking heads, etc. and a high end film camera for music videos, etc.
This seems to be a better way to go for me.. I am not wild about trying to make RED into an ALL THINGS camera.

Jay,
The HPX500 is positioned between the HVX200 and the HDX900/2000 models. Given the 14bit ADC, all around newer design, and the option for interchangeable lenses, it looks like it will replace the Varicam in many productions. Should be a lot on this camera at NAB. It uses the same CCD block as the Panny SDX900 -- 620,000 pixels with horizontal and vertical green pixel shift. The few teaser images and reports that have leaked out look pretty nice. But it still suffers from much of the same problems that effect the HVX200 -- not much detail as one of the biggest issues.
Anyway, the right camera for the right job... I was really considering one of these as an upgrade to my HVX200. However, RED just makes a much better fit for me and in the end won't cost me any more -- possibly even less since I can use my Nikon glass. On the bright side, Panasonic did drop P2 card prices ($700 now for the 8GB card). IMO, the price is still too high and the $700 mark for 8GB should have happened back in August, but that's just me. Hopefully that means 16GB P2 cards will be under $1500 or so.

Makes sense.. Since I already own the 900 this looks like a natural path for me to take. My out of pocket costs for the 500 will be minimal and I will have a "standard" SD/HD camera for my more "boring" work. On the creative, high end side, the RED camera will be ready to go, and then I can focus on outfitting it correctly.
At least, this seems to work for me. I will be looking at the firestore for now, these P2 cards are just too damn much money

If only it had variable frame rates at 1080p. This will undoubtedly be the next step for panasonic for there future models.

Hi Jay, Dont you want to wait though to see how things go with the red camera at NAB and third party solutions. Some of the disadvantages might not seem so bad say four weeks from now.
Further down the line we might see a significant move towards providing more facilities to make it more suitable to other areas that you feel red lacks. I would be interested to know what are the things that is making you choose another camera for different types of work. Auto function for someone like me would have been a dream but red has other advantages.
The focus assist should provide an easier method of focusing that presently exists in all other cameras. And jim hinted us reservation holders will not be disappointed at NAB. Hopefully the camera will have pre-record and the flash modules are providing us with great if difficult choices. Also it is a significant statement by Jim Jannard to say that all future software downloads will be free for the original owner over the life of the camera. Like that is saving us $$$$$ we might even get a modification somewhere down the line that allows you to fit some electronics that will allow the use of auto functions on "new red lenses" (just guessing guys) would that be something.
Remember if red are to become the "best camera company in the world" they must surely satisfy all the other groups of people who feel red does not cover there needs well enough? who knows?
