link if this is brought up all the time, bu i just downloaded RED ALERT and imported an .r3d file and asked it to create a QT proxy, which it did, but when I open it it's just a white screen and a window pops up saying that a component is missing and I might be able to download it from apple.com
Any ideas?

What quicktime are you on?

Do you have the REDCODE quicktime plugin for QT? You need that in order to play your proxy as a quicktime reference from REDALERT! Here is the link.

alright, so my next question is that i can't get any of the proxies to play at 24fps. The medium ones play at around 8 and the small ones play at about 12.
im on a MBP 2.33ghz/2gigs ram

Have you tried importing the files into FCP and see if they play there?

Wait, before that, what is your QT Codec? I have been using H.264 for my .mov files.

just tried it and there's no difference. I'm using FCP5 though if that matters

what do you mean? I'm using RED ALERT's "make quicktimes" function. Do i have controls over that that I'm not aware of?

ah, yeah ok, I hit RENDER and see the different codecs. I rendered a 264 version and it plays back much better, although not perfect.
but it took about 2 minutes to render a 10 second clip. I was under the impression that other people were able to just grab the medium quicktime proxie and start editing with it on a laptop. is this not true?

Click the big RENDER button below your S curve box, it then it allows you to change your settings as an output (for ProRes or in my case a .mov file) and designate a folder to export your 2k proxy to.

I haven't, it takes me a while to render...You can start editing right away in REDCINE if you wanted to go that route.

can you explain hot to use RED CINE to make proxies to edit with? Also, i opened the 10 second r3d into RED CINE, did some color to it, scaled it to HDTV and asked it to export as a quicktime file and it said it was going to take 40 minutes!
does all this sound right???

I had that problem with REDCINE at first. I didn't have it in my applications folder so it didn't operate as fast as it normally should. I moved it to my applications folder, things worked better. But I still get a blue screen on occasion saying "failed to load image buffer". You can load a whole sequence of shots from REDCINE, they appear in your log line, set your in and out points, color correct, then click output, change your settings to h.264 and a quicktime movie, then GO, that funny big red logo on the side, then your set to edit in FCP.

when you get a chance, could you do me a favor and import the medium proxy of one of your r3d's into into final cut and see if it plays back properly?

Nathan Garofalos
05-25-2008, 11:34 PM
You can make a quicktime movie out of REDCINE, or any other format you want from REDCINE.

And yeah, I can get a medium proxie to play back from REDALERT! in FCP with no problems.

i know you can make a quicktime movie, but i want the reference movies. The tiny 4 kb proxy movies, that don't need to be rendered.

Yeah, you can. Set your export folder somewhere in your movie files, or on your external hd, then import that into FCP, and you don't have to do any rendering.

Okay, so it played last night, a few times, now this morning its not playing at all. I tried reinstalling the REDCODE QT plugin, but no success. Have you gotten it to work?
