Why is this on the "Cinematography" forum?
Because Benicio del Toro plays Che Guevara in CHE that is shot on RED if you ever heard about it.

Yes, I have, unfortunately, heard about it. But still, this is a thread about an ACTOR winning an ACTING award on a movie, whatever camera it was shot on. I still don't see what it has to do with cinematography, the art of capturing moving images?

It's tied to RED and that works for me.
Awesome news; RED gets mad cred with this (like it didn't have it already)

Benicio del Toro is the first person ever who won one big international film award
(Best Actor, Cannes Film Festival 2008) in a movie (CHE) that is SHOT ON RED.
Or for somebody who has a bit hard understanding for all that:
RED camera was involved as a cinematography tool to shoot
Benicio del Toro in Steven Soderbergh's CHE and then after
Benicio del Toro won Best Actor in Cannes Film Festival 2008.
Hope this should be clear by now.

Panavision Cameras shooting on Kodak film were involved as the primary cinematography tools to shoot Benicio Del Toro in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and then after that Benecio Del Toro won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars in 2001.
RED is a great cinematography tool, but in no way does that bear any reflection upon the acting in a particular film. Del Toro is Del Toro, he's a great actor with many abilities, who can deliver performances that win awards no matter what medium he is being captured on, be it mini-DV or 65mm.

Anyway we are happy here that RED was involved in the latest Benicio's acting creation that won Best Actor Cannes 2008.
Terribly sorry about Panavision Cameras shooting on Kodak film, mini-DV or 65mm.
They missed Benicio this time :).
