Well I just got back from opening night; HOLY S**T!!!
This movie will blow your mind, or I should say these films. Man I wasn't expecting anywhere near the level of energy it had; it was an experience really. There are few films that I strongly believe should be seen in an audience packed film theater, and this one is DEFINITELY one of them! I really can't get into specifics because I really knew nothing going into the movie (with the expection of Mike's review over at hdforindies), and feel that others should too. Just...expect the unexpected...then expect some more.

On a more relevant note, I was very curious to see the comparison between the Genesis and 35mm. It was really apples to oranges though, because one film was shot mostly at night, and the other was mostly day; however I will say that Rodriguez definitely made good use of the DI process; especially in the color grading area. As far as resolution, I really couldn't tell to be honest. While the 35mm definitely had its usual high dynamic range in sunlight, the Genesis had a very impressive range as well, despite it being shot mostly at night. Rodriguez also added a healthy amount of film grain, so the two films blended seamlessly. But anyways it's late, so go see it and have fun!

It seems that the digital cameras have an edge with the low light. This is really emphasized when I read that they ended up shooting night for day on at least on scene for Apocolypto... and no, that isn't a typo.

So Rodriguez used the Genesis and Tarantino used 35?

The grosses were disappointing for the Weinstein's. What did they expect when they open a film like Grindhouse on Easter weekend? They should have waited until after NAB.

Yeah - that's weird timing. This will probably be a word of mouth movie(s) and I wouldn't be surprised to see the numbers stay pretty consistent and the total run to be a moneymaker.
