Is there a link between China's coming Red Ray and Red's Red Ray ?

I don't know, but Macbidouille.com (the French counterpart of Hardmac.com) makes mention of an article on CDRinfo :
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=23365

which talks about China wanting to develop an alternative to BlueRay, based on Red laser tehnology (like the current DVD format). This is also what Red are proposing with Red Ray...

Definitly interesting, I think we need competition now that HD-DVD is gone, and with the current advancements in compression technology, it seems quite logical to use the cheaper more currently available media for our HD (and more) content.

I doubt Red are working with the chinese system, but if the chinese get their act together and have some kind of SDK for their Red Ray, it would be amazing if Red made their system compatible. Red may need to think about changing the name though.

Cheers,
Damien

I have also found the following articles and one actual web-site in the same name, but unrelated...:

http://www.red-ray.com/

http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2005/03/31/red-ray-fights-blue-ray-in-dvd-disarray

It does not appear that there is any link between the two - it's going to be interesting to watch the "battle of the names" instead...

But Red is the only manufacturer that will offer 4K...everything else is still "Full HD". Red is much more impressive, and has a bigger potential...a LOT bigger.

Asking Chinese to give up "red" name is like asking Tibet's monks to wear B&W stripes with pink elephants and tweedy-slippers...

It seems to me that RedRay is something entirely different.

And has consequences that extend beyond its physical medium.

Amen, and RedRay is different than Red Ray.

Yep, and RedRay has already been trademarked, so it is good to go...for the US that is.

The main thing will probably be the codec.

OMG, how do you put 2 hrs. of 4K in 9 Gb.

I believe in Red all the way.

TM only means Trade-Mark. You can assign TM's Yourself to anything You do. ® is a registered Trade-Mark. Until it is registered - anyone else can use it also - especially in other countries...
