View Full Version : What do want to use RED RAY for, list here:

1. Deck in studio. (Let's kick those RAIDS home where they belong)
2. Playback/Distribution when we feed our Christies and SRXs
3. That DVD? I don't need it. I need two flash slots, so that one can load films like reels for playback/editing. I can playback from flash cards as well...
4. Surround audio
5. Several RedRays to be stackable and sync'able to feed several streams of 4k over esata into an NLE for realtime playback and editing
For a start... :)
And they should come with a nice milkgirl for unpacking, a porche and a set of ray-bans, nikes or whatever shades you prefer...

Forget Ray-bans or Nike's - it would have to be Okley I'm afraid... (not that there is anything wrong with it...)
I would like to see a portable dual-deck for on-location editing and preview. Of course it wouldn't hurt to have matched 4K/2K RED mini-projector or at least a 2K monitor...

Yeah - and I second the milkgirl delivery idea...

I would like to head over to www.withoutabox.com (http://www.withoutabox.com/) (a worldwide film festival network) and give them the heads up on RedRay so that they can spread the concept to every major (and mini) festival around the world. When they catch the RED fever they could then add a "RED READY" festival icon for each festival that supports REDRAY playback. OFF TOPIC...If you have festival ready film in the can (or drive?) then this site is an incredible place to start.

www.withoutabox.com really is fantastic. Makes it reaaaally easy to submit to festivals.

I'm the Admin over there. We know about it. I think it's a little premature to start evangelizing it. Let's see a product first and then filmmakers will embrace it. Obviously it's going to be potentially huge for festival and indie theatrical projection. But like everyone else I wanna see the gear before I pop the cork. That said, it being RED I expect it to deliver in psade.

My brother Stephen (http://www.reduser.net/forum/member.php?u=514) suggested this idea, you could use RED RAY to drive systems with more than one display device. For example, if you wanted to do some kind of presentation with four video projectors in a row forming one long image, you could use RED RAY in 4K mode and send a different HD output to each projector. You'd set up the video so that it was perfectly sliced in the right places (easy in After Effects) so that the images lined up.

I hope this deck will open new theatres for filmmakers to show their goods. Simply and complicated. That's RED RAY.

It would be great if RED Ray worked as signal splitter. 4K output for video wall, consisting of 3 or more LCD screens, using DVI or HDMI.

I'm sure I don't fully understand the idea of Red Ray (mainly because there is very little info about it) But I don't see the use of a Red Ray over a raid... it seems like more work, a hassle, and slower, takes up more space, and the media is practically as sensative as Harddrives.

For now I am just wishing more festivals allowed Blu-ray submissions, and that I could pick up a Blu-ray burner for not too much, because that would be a great option.

how about a storage archive system for R3D files as a cheaper option to RAID or tape storage?

RED RAY uses a different codec to REDCODE - it's RGB and not raw for one thing, and it is many times more compressed... So as an archival solution, it wouldn't really work too well unless you weren't really concerned about using the footage - i.e. if you just wanted to view it...
