Hi all,
I am PC user, so I'm really confuse with R3d seems towards Mac. RedAlert is only for Mac. I intend to borrow my friend's Macbook to generate QTime files from R3D by RedAlert. Finish this step, i bring all QTime files to Avid PC via ALE. All i need is EDL (for any house with Assimilate SCRATCH systems) or XML for RedCine (hope v3 release soon). Is this workflow available? is EDL or XML correct for online?

Anyones. Thanks in advanced

EDL for composition. The XML export is a pull list as XML expected by RedCine to regenerate the spans of R3D files needed for the final conform. Although there will be an XML of the seqeunce as well, RedCine will not take that in.

It sounds like there is no way to take even low quality renders out of Redcine into Avid, edit them and then XML back into RedCine with an export back to Avid. Is that correct or is there some way to do it on a PC? I ask because I know I have one client that edits PC Avid and wants to use the RED but can't find a decent workflow.

RedCiine rendered out as DNxHD 115 (it defaults to this and there is no way to change it)
Use MetaCheater to create ALE file
Import ALE and merger QT reners.

This will give you the metadata needed to generate an EDL. Scratch and other DI systems can take that EDL in for conform. In your mail you mentioned going back to Avid once again - what is that for? Are you looking to finish on Avid as HD?

So what if you want to finish color correcting in Avid? Can you use the ALE to somehow get a cut back in RedCine like Crimson? Or is your best bet to first light and high rez render all your clips to start with (like doing an online edit)?

Seeing as RedCine can only create DNxHD 115, you are stuck in a position to determine whether that is good enough for finish or not. Certaibly there have been plenty of shows finishing at that data rate, that is a decision you have to make. Then the process is really to "one light" in RedCine then edit and finish off the imported files.

After offline editing, there's always a possibility to rerender the used clips to non Avid codecs in RedCine and importing them uncompressed (or a codec > DNxHD 115) into Avid for finishing. Make sure you use the same filename for easy batch import.

The downside is that you need a lot of harddrive space for both the rendered Quicktimes and the Avid media. But for spots and shortform it's very doable.

we've been testing finishing using MB Colorista and Looks in the AVID. I have to say that there is still a ton of correction latitude left and it looks fantastic.
