This may seem like an obvious statement but don't insert the BOTTOM PLATE mounting bolts unless you are mounting the BOTTOM PLATE to the RED ONE. Otherwise, you run the risk of driving a bolt into the camera's fan - not good (see attached).

YOU mean that we shpuld mount the bottom plate to the camera then afte insert those bolts :excl:

Also, over tightening of the bolts can cause the plate to bend, widening the dovetail gap and putting undue pressure on the top of the shoulder dovetail. Tightening the bolts as evenly as possible should allow the plate to remain straight. You'll see this as you start tightening one side vs. the other. We tighten the bolts in turn a little at a time so the gap between the side of the camera body and the side of the bottom plate is evenly spaced left side to right side.

also consider using a washer so the bolt doesn't eat into the Red bottom plate ...

i have a question that is somewhat related to this. i have the SIM accessories (top handle and toe plate), and am getting a Element Technica 2060 dovetail plate. Do I need anything else for the bottom of the camera, or do i attach the 2060 dovetail right to the camera? dumb question i know, but i am a workflow guy, not a camera tech guy.

The SIM toe plate is a bridge between the camera and a dovetail plate such as the ET model. They should work together fine, although in my experience different manufacturer's toys sometime do not play nice. But in theory these are designed to fit together.

PLATE then BOLTS is right. BOLTS with no PLATE, bad idea.

Yikes. Good to know. Because it crossed my mind that it's easier to keep track of the bolts when they're screwed into the camera even when there's no bottom plate attached. But that turns out to be a BAD idea! Fortunately we didn't try it yet.

Sounds like a design problem :umm:

This whole thing is a design problem, as great as the camera is as bad is (at least) the old version of this part. Not really made to win design awards ;-) The only solution that really works for the moment are the element technica parts, I got mine last week, made me very happy.

I have a problem regarding the bottom plate and the shoulder dovetail: i am not able to move the lock on the shoulder dovetail to the side anymore and seperate / slide the two parts. i already removed the bottom plate from the camera body, but it doesn't help. anybody with a similar experience?

regards,
martin

Mine has a tendency to get jammed together too. A good hard knock seems to do the trick...
