ok.. Ive been struggling for a while.. i need to figure out a recording option asap.. dont wanna spend the 6500 on a raw port.. dont know if i want to spend 2 geez for the flash option..hard drive sounds risky biz according to alot of people... what are you guys doing?

Do i want to shoot eng run and gun bumpy cold and maybe high altitude shots.. YES maybe.. but i plan on mostly doing music video, commercial.. and feature film type stuff.. maybe ill just buy an hvx for my ENG stuff..

so do i just get a 900 red drive and be super safe until flash comes down in price or 3rd parties develop something? or what!

im starting to miss the ease of tape :/

why cant i just go buy a 500gig harddrive and connect it to my red?!? it would be soooo easy..

AHHHH HELP!

brook... ur gunna be my right hand man and u will be using my camera too i mean.. we are practically neighbors and all.. help me out what should WE get:)

"why cant i just go buy a 500gig harddrive and connect it to my red?!? it would be soooo easy.."

When it comes to harddrives, there are different speeds, 5400 rpm vs 7200rpm, ide vs sata..etc. ide drives are not fast enough..and plus the red drive is a raid setup..so a bit too confusing to implement a "use your own harddrive" situation. I think the 320 raid drive is a steal for the price compared to the 1800-1900 dollar 160gb firestor.

Unless you are doing some crazy super rough run and gun type shooting where the drive will be subject to significant jolts and impact I wouldn't worry too much. I'm waiting to hear if the sandisk extreme iv compact flash cards will work. All the flash prices are fairly reasonable, especially compared to panasonic p2s. By the time you get your machine, the flash options will become even cheaper. Last I checked the express card was around 250 dollars for 16gb from transcend (via info from engadget).

I'm going with compact flash so I can use the cards for my digital slr when needed. Otherwise the express cards seem like a real bargain. I am gonna scoop up two red-drives so I can shoot and offload footage at the same time.

It seems like you're either comfortable using a hard drive, or you aren't. You can certainly buy 500G SATA drives but as I understand it any one single drive is going to be marginal for the sustained transfer rate needed. You want at least a 2-drive RAID array which is what the red drive option is.

This is what I'll very likely end up going with, as of right now. I can get the $500 Express Card module for the RED, and then a couple of 16GB cards for another $500, making a grand total of 32GB Expresss Card solid-state recording for about $1000.

Unless, of course, by the time I get my RED #791, Compact Flash cards have dropped in price even more, or 1.8" SATA flash drives are cheaper. We're just going to have to wait and see. I know I'd rather go with flash than with spinning drives, but I can't decide which flash module is the best option.

OH wait..
im confused.. so we can use regular flash cards? we just need to get the flash module?

Yes, as long as it meets the specs required for 4K Redcode RAW. Not all Compact Flash cards can reach the necessary write speeds. RED will let us know which ones they have tested and worked.

wow ive been retarded.. for some reason i didnt think it was normal flash.. i thought it was special red flash only. seems like a safe option.. especially if i can unload the flash footage quickly.. then im definatly going with it.. now its up to which one i want.. sata or regular

I think for situations where you are stationary and require long recording time, the red drive is a total must buy considering the long recording time you get.

Judging from your points Jaime, I can see that the best strategy is to wait until close to the time you receive your RED to review the current prices for all the flash options. (thanks to the approximate time table the Jim said he would have at NAB)

Strengths of CF- can be used for other purposes like digital slrs
Negatives of CF- I think only 8gb is common. Not sure if they have a super speed 16gb CF yet..though I'm sure its coming.

Strengths of express card/34 -> so far is price. 250 for 16gb is SUPER good.though I need confirmation on whether or not transcends cards are fast enough and where I can buy them for that price. The one website I pulled up in another thread had it at 500.00 bucks (still bearable price actually considering an 8gb p2 card still costs more even with the recent 8gb priced drop). I also love how you can pop this sucker right into the macbook pro for transfer. It will probably the fastest method of transfer for offloading. For compact flash, the fastest option will be the firewire card readers.
Negatives-> requires pc or macbook pro with express slot. Not useful for other purposes.

We will find out hopefully at NAB if the extreme IV sandisk cards will fit the bill.

As for sata or regular..what are you referring to?

i was referring to the express or RED 1.8" SATA Flash ON CAMERA Module

to clarify..you have a choice between three different flash modules.

one for CF, one for express and one for the 1.8 sata flash.

if you get the module for CF, you won't need to choose between express or red 1.8. unless you mean that you want compact flash and another one.

honestly i dont know much about flash media.. i want the best option.. unless the best option is extreamly expensive.. i want the best for an indi budget

what are the record times for 4k raw 24f on an 8 gig CF card? if it's about like the 4gig in my hvx for 720p i am in...but i bet it's far less then 10min...awwwe hell even 5 min I am in, most takes are less then 5 total min right for commercial stuff? just not for the long doc type stuff

There's an interesting thread here on subject. Including a poll.

usb is not fast enough.

Remember that the onboard flash solutions will not be ready until later this year. It isn't us this time. The SATA flash solutions that are fast enough aren't out yet, but due soon.

What solid state solutions will be ready upon release though?

ExpressCard?
