Actually, I'm just practicing my happy announcement when I really do get my birger mount. :whistling:

LOL! Sorry everyone! I couldn't resist!

It was just too easy of a practical joke. :innocent:
Will you find it in your hearts to forgive me?

That's a brilliant point Jason!:)

Now if you really want to piss some people off across the globe, just ask them," You should really do a search..." You will get flogged and "hate pm's", no matter your intention.:)

ps- Paul, your humor is sublime!

WOKKA WOKKA WOKKA!

I guess this thread time-traveled from "a week or two" in the future, a.k.a. 2011.

It's all Erik's fault. :innocent:

Because if I did have my birger mount, I wouldn't be lurking around here with nothing better to do then to write silly posts.

Right now, my Red One is a beautiful paper weight. :umm:

(Well, actually I'm still waiting on my Red power supply too.)

Anyway... this thread is a little more entertaining then the other birger threads that feel like one of those long car vacations with the kids in the back saying over and over, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" :)

Getting Birger's mount is going to be REAL THING very soon.

Jason Ing
06-05-2008, 02:39 PM
Yeah... that will be the day! :)

I wonder how many users ordered it?

Anyone else out there with an actual camera that's dead in the water until the birger mount arrives?

I don't want to jump into production and rent lenses until I've had the time to do all my testing. So my canon lens and birger mount affords me a lot of luxury to play with my Red camera without incurring any additional costs. I volunteered my cam to Paul's production, but I guess he was okay and didn't need an extra camera body. :)

I got my camera a few months back. The proverbial $20,000 doorstopper. No PL lenses, just waiting for the Birger mount. Would have gotten the Nikon mount if I had known it was going to take this long, but it's hard to justify the $500 cost when that mount is always just "a week or so" away.

The good thing... trying to see the positive side as usual... is that I do get a sense that the mounts can be made in large quantities relatively quickly so even if the people at the end of the line won't have to wait too much longer once the production lines starts going.

I got the nikon mount, it is a very expensive sliver of metal. But... I can shoot on to my hearts content while I ever so paitently wait for Birger to make it a $500 coaster.

I did a double take... had I left to make the donuts... and bumped into myself returning from making the donuts?

Sitting with the software engineer, doing final test on a couple of units right now... next week is now tomorrow... this thing is soooo cooool!

Well I have every confidence in you Eric.

I think a side effect with the internet is that we are all privy to the development process. this can be a good thing or bad thing.

I for one have enjoyed hearing about how it has all come together. I am sure it wil be a quality product.

BTW. Is the wireless FF remote in the current pipeline, or is that more like next year?

That seems to be the RED way.

It was annoying at first, now it's kind of fun - kind of like the old days when you had 8 future fathers in the maternity ward waiting room smoking cigarettes and killing time til there baby (or the birger mount) is born. I think I am going to need a box of cigars for Saturday (c'mon Erik, you promised! ... and did you remember trigger in the software?)

Yeah, I'm not buying the 5" lcd to wait for the 7".

Hey Erik, don't start becoming like Jim and tease us. :bleh:

Because that would be so uncool... like pretending to get a mount when you really didn't just to tease everyone knowing they're on the edge of their seats waiting for it to ship any day now so they're going to hit a "I got it!" thread like there's no tomorrow... :whistling:

:)

Really glad to hear that you're loving it. Considering what I tried out at NAB, it must be a beautiful piece of engineering. Send it! Send It!

Now I'm envious of the guys who'll be posting real "I got it" threads next week.

By the way, was I right that I read elsewhere that you'll be able to ramp up production to a level that everyone will get their mounts relatively soon (if they elected to ship asap)? 2-3 weeks for everyone?

If it's taken this long for Erik to finalize the Canon mount, I don't even wanna think how long it'll take the Nikon mount to come to fruition. Oh man...

haha!

Been off the hook fills so good, when it arrives it ARRIVES!

I know it is going to be great and allow for some creative work, with my lens collection.

BTW. Is the wireless FF remote in the current pipeline, or is that more like next year?

I might be taking that on (in small qtys).

I have a control box that I built for the original ef-232 that worked well, and I have since purchased a bluetooth module to communicate with the new mount. It has three programs: Manual, Snap, and Dolly. Manual is just like it sounds, Snap sets three points to three buttons and snaps to that point when the button is depressed, and Dolly sets a starting point, an ending point, and a rate. Dolly isn't quite right as it currently does not compensate for the exponential focusing function of a lens. It'll be the bomb if I can pull that off...

The current setup is about the size of a hardcover book. It has 2 buttons for the iris, 3 buttons for the focusing programs, a knob (of course), and a 4x20 backlit LCD panel. Some of the software will need to be rewritten because the API of the new mount will be a bit different (more feature-rich from what Eric describes).

The image below shows the control box as an early prototype. The secondary focus knob is now gone and the SONAR sensor has been removed as well.

I am curious as to what interest in this product be. I'd actually like to get it right and sell the design to someone else (I want to make movies, not hardware).

I'm bumping this post to remind everyone that we may have alternatives to the Birger remote and focus knob. I wonder how quickly Bob can get this up and running.

Seriously. With such pent-up demand, why hasn't someone else produced a Canon mount by now? Is it really that complicated?

Well, there are 2 companies that have produced a Canon mount for the RED (P+S and Andy Lesniak), but neither one has gotten the green warranty light from Red. Birger has the monopoly on that for now.

12-14-2008, 02:51 AM
Well, sorry to say like this but maybe we need something more than one guy who mounting their product in a garage in their free time?

P+S are not exactly operating out of a garage. They have won a series of awards, including a technical Oscar.

Neither is Birger for that matter. They have NASA as their customer.

Andy is maybe the closest you get to a garage shop, but he has had the most open ears to his customers.

Vincent Thomas

I was not speaking about IMS.. Andy is certainly talented and respectful about his customer but he maybe reach a point that it's difficult to respond the demand in his situation?

I just wish we could find a solution as soon as possible and then if we all put a little more pression on this, maybe it could happen in less than 6 month times maybe?
