Redrock will have their new matteboxes ready in time for nab.. at least thats what they said in the forum over there.. it looks pretty good.. an arri-esk design. 500$ cant go wrong.. its a 3 stage with the capability of adding more.. as far as i know.
For low budget indi filmmakers this sounds like an amazing deal...PLUS the name is REDrock ... come on.. anything with RED in it gets autostrapped to my red one.
i dont think u can really go wrong here.. i hear the redrock follow focus was a bust because of backlash but i also heard there is a fix to that problem.. im not sure.. but either way..this looks pretty awesome.

it also comes with sides and french flag:)

Redrock has "fixed" the backlash problem with their FFs. There is also a fix on their site for those who bought the earlier versions of their FFs.

Good to hear about the matte boxes.

What filter sizes, gears?
Is it clip on or 15 mm rods, if both does it use a bracket?
Does it require bridge plate?
500 bucks is pretty cheep!

This is most likely going to be part of my RED package. Their Mattebox and Follow Focus, combined with Nikkor lenses, will make for a very affordable but very powerful camera.

have u tried it?
i have a modified indifocus.. and it uses the same gearing as the redrock ff
so i should be able to fix the backlash on it

"It will be black where you see white and 2 wings 2 flaps included. Price: $500. The remote focus, price: $500, available at NAB time."- REDROCK

4x4 or 4x5. one stage can rotate too

clip on? to the lens? no its rod mount.. not swing away which bums me out but im pretty handy and will make a swing mount for mine.

PS.. i think this mattebox will only work for SLR lenses.. which is ok with me cuz i plan on owning only slr lenses.. i will rent cine lenses on a need to basis and with those ill rent a cine mattebox

PS i forgot to mention their remote Focus unit for 500...also..
im personally more excited about the mattebox but remote focus is definatly SIIIIICCCKKKKK

chrosziel - it has a 110mm opening, so it will work with just about every
lens out there"

Both of these products are on my shopping list. More discussion here from some earlier threads:

Agree, the main disadvantage of this is no swing-away (in this iteration). Their words were:

"Swing-away did not make it into the release. to change lenses, you simply loosen the microMatteBox on the rods and slide it forward"

The rod clamps in the final version are supposed to be metal, if that helps. in answer to the question of "will swing-away be an upgrade or not available without buying a new matte box" they said:

"Don't know yet - we are focused on getting this version out"

$500, including french flag. 3 stages (1 rotating)

Arri MB-20 still looks nice but this might be good for the price...

if it could hold filters and keep the light out, i would put a cardboard mattebox on the camera rather than spend the price for a mb-20. i could use that cold hard cash for something usefull. like some lenses and/or the monitor

Bruce Allen

True! Although whatever LCD monitor you buy will be worth 1/2 of its current value in a few years. The matte box will still be useful.

Totally agree about lenses.

im not actually getting the monitor for that reason.. EVF's will maintain price especially RED EVF but yah the monitor i can live without and or buy something less expensive.. im mainly looking to keep money for Lenses or eventually a new powermac 8 core

I have a very early RedRock follow focus and was displeased. I got the upgrade as soon as it came out and I haven't look back since. The new Follow Focus is solid.

I use a cavision mattebox and it works great. For $500, the Redrock is going to be a fantastic seller.

I also have been nothing but satisfied with my recent purchase of the RedRock Follow Focus. I plan to port over this FF to the RED 18-55, should be no problem? I also plan to port over my Chrosziel 450-HVX200K, still need to double check that though.

Best,

Best,

Chrosziel 450-01 mattebox with 4x4s will easily cover the front element of the Red 18-50.

I would ditch the Red Rock FF and at least get the Chrosziel 206-01s to go with your mattebox. :matrix:

Good to know the Mattebox works, as for the Chrosziel 206-01 FF I will look into it, I take it you used one before?

Be careful with statements like that. While a 4x4 should cover the front glass element itself, the "hood" on the front of the lens probably won't fit in a 4x4 space [considering it used the 114mm-130mm MB20 clip on ring at NAB]. A 4x4 will be a compromise. Unless something has changed or I'm completely wrong.

I have one I used on my dvx100 and I love it. The germans know what they are doing. :matrix:

I was told the outside housing diameter was 104mm which meant one could step down the 110mm of the Chrosziel to 104mm. Chros makes a ring to do this, so it seems possible. The front optical element of the 18-50 looked to be no bigger than 70mm so coverage with a 4X4 or 4x5.65 filter seems totally possible. I'm not saying its perfect. I'm just saying its potentially workable.

In any case, the 450-01 is still a great MB to use over the Nikons, especially the 17-35 f2.8.

Haskell, I say hang on to your 450-01 until you are 100% sure of your lens set-up with the lenses on hand. You won't go wrong picking up a used 206-01s because people always want used Chros gear.

Thanks, I will hold on to the matte box in the meantime and still looking for used 206-01. I might just drop on a new one if its that good.

oh and that 17-35 f2.8 looks like a great lens, cheers.

Just put it on your ebay favorites, they pop up. You'll save at least $500.

I don't believe a 110mm dia. will be sufficent for larger Cine zooms.
