Will EPIC have HD 1080 output while recording 5k?

4.4.4 & 4.2.2 as well as Progressive and PsF

I sure hope so, and we need the ability to toggle data on and off of all outputs no matter what is hooked up.

Who knows with Epic specs,
Almost no comment from the RED guys at the moment, busy with
build 16 I suppose. Makes the Epic threads a tad speculative after a while.
No news is no news.
I vote we close all Epic threads due to the lack of interest shown from those
given the task of making this camera. Any seconds?
We could open them up again in 6-12 months time when Jim and the guys have somthing to
say on the matter. Calling all moderators.

why would red comment on nitty gritty questions like these that couldn't possibly know answers to yet. we just learned about 1080p output on red one a week ago and that camera's been shipping for a year. i think red is watching epic and scarlet threads but more for ideas to implement broad features that most users might want. no one should care about details at this stage because i doubt that red even cares about details for a prototype cam sitting in their labs.

i say keep the comments and requests coming but don't expect answers to any questions unless they're broader technical ones.

I think the EPIC -- if it's going to be a more expensive high-end pro camera anyway -- should have dual-link HDSDI out plus a 5K RAW uncompressed data mode for people who want or need to record either uncompressed HD or uncompressed RAW data. There perhaps could even be an alternate model with an optical viewfinder.

The other issue is whether it should have a taller (4-perf tall instead of 3-perf tall), squarer sensor for people who want more vertical real estate for efx work, or for people shooting anamorphic. That one seems less critical since cropping a 5K sensor horizontally is always an option.

I think it would be an interesting idea to put an SRW mount on it, This may sound crazy to people in reduser but because of the SRW mount or port or whatever you want to call it You can use Panavision's Solid State drive on the F23 as well as the Genesis and the F35, If Arri had used it on the D21 then this would practically have become the next standard.

The problem with that is that the Genesis and the F23 have half the unit built into the camera -- the SRW1 as a recording device is actually made up of two units, the SRPC-1 processor and the SRW-1 deck. You need BOTH to record anything, so they put the SRPC-1 into the Genesis and F23 cameras.

So you can't really just stick the one-unit SRW-1 piece onto a RED or Viper or Arri-D20, you need both halves to record anything, the SRW-1 and SRPC-1.

But if the RED or EPIC had single and dual-link HDSDI outs, they could use solid state recorders like the Venom. Of course, most people would rather record 4K RAW with the RED rather than be limited to HD resolution, but you never know.

Or of course they could license to the interface with the Vision Research Phantom CineMag. That holds more than 30 minutes of uncompressed RAW 4K. I haven't done the math but at 5K it would be well over 20 minutes to a CineMag.

Just sayin'.

I just like the idea of a film like magazine that you stick on the back or the top like cameras of old. Not this Hang it off an arm with a tether on it or put in a cradle which is attached on the rails.
I know I'm not alone on this issue but I won't claim to be in the majority.

Do you realize that this is the perfect description of the CineMag?
