Many people are renting their cameras. What are the pitfalls, things to be aware of when starting your own rental business?

Can the cameras be insured easily in case some moron destroys it?

Is the warranty affected?

If a lens is scratched, is the lens toast? Can it be repaired by the manufacturer? At what cost (using the red lenses as an example)?

If you´re not into rental yet, don´t start it now just with a Red. You need a lot more then just a Camera
Lenses
Support
Filters
Follow Focus / Wireless Follow Focus
Mattebox
Client Monitors
......

than you need backup of almost everything, in case something brakes or gear returns later than expected.. (add 100 more other reasons here)

If you´re DP yourself, and have the possibility to go on a Job together with the camera, and you´re allready in the bussines, different story.

I can't speak for Red specifically, but yes, Zeiss and Cooke lenses can be repaired.

Of course, the older the lens, the less parts that are around.

You can call duclos lenses and ask about prices and services.
