View Full Version : Madness at Red Booth

This shows what a dummy I am -- spent several days at NAB last year and never even noticed the Red booth. My head was too focused on Sony, I guess.

But I've read several postings about the pandamonium around the booth last year (good natured and excited, but craziness nonetheless). My question is, will it be as jammed this year? I expect it will be even wilder.

So that leads me to my next question. If I have already decided to order 3 Reds, should I skip the Red booth early on and hope I can order from the website, or fight my way through and hope I'm near the front of the line?

I don't mind the fight, but I'm hoping to get the lowest reservation number possible.

By the way, will Red directly accept credit cards at the website, or paypal only?

Thanks!

I was with a bunch of people last year and we all met up early and went as soon as they opened the doors. After that the trend seemed to be like one large group would come to the booth one after the other, there wasn't a crowd per se. But it sounds like the booth will be bigger this year, so I would recommend just trying to get there early depending on how badly you want to see the camera and everything.

Just.... don't trample anybody, okay?

Hey Tim,

Good choice on selecting Redone - 3 cameras? Very cool.
The redteam posted earlier that online orders will be available at:
http://red.com/index.htm
beginning Monday 4/16/07 as well as at NAB. It was also posted that a 10% deposit is required. There was some mention that "reservation numbers" will no longer be the nomenclature simply order numbers.

I also posted the question about Paypal only payment and there's been no response thus far - the redteam is obviously busy. Jim and the redteam are really sharp and heard the reduser complaints about paypal so the answer is - more will be revealed.

Hope this helps - and is subject to change by the redteam at anytime:-)

If you want to eat breakfast before the doors open, I would advise getting it anywhere but the convention restaurant. Last year it left a lot to be desired.
Coffee is alright though. Wish I could make it this year.

I, personally, if I were you, would try to get to the RED Tent as soon as you can, first thing monday.

It'll be a bigger stampede than the normal one that rushes Apple's booth every morning looking to sign up for the hands-on classes!

RED should close their booth until the crowd outside the booth gets too big. Then they can say, "Those of you with an "R" can come on in for the first demonstration. Everyone else can wait...." heh heh

free giveaways perhaps? hehe

I will be there super early. They should do some type of ticket system..otherwise..everyone knows when happened when the ps3 launched.

There will no doubt be a lot of people buying that day. Get there early.

Might you get further up the queue by ordering on line rather than waiting in line, or will those there in person get some type of priority?

I think if your a bit clausterphobic and you already know what you want
get on the internet and keep refreshing until they put up the order page
cause there is going to be a line out past the sony booth to order there.

Here's a something I posted last year on the topic.......
-----------------------

"I was not at Nab on that faithful Monday morning when the Red Revolution began.

Had I known that Red was going to be taking reservations, I would have been, for sure!

Like a lot of guys on this board who didn't go to Nab, I was on the Red Web page by 9:00 A.M. sharp.

When I saw the price of Red One I could of done a back flip .... with joy.

And when I realized they were taking reservations at Nab, my heart sank to the floor. Why oh why didn't I didn't fly in to Vegas?

By 9:15 A.M. I discovered the phone # on the web page to the order desk at Nab. My heart actually skipped a beat. I dialed ... Please answer.

I dialed that # over and over again but I couldn't get through.

I left a message at 9:25 A.M.

I tried to resist .... but every twenty minutes or so, I dialed again (sorry Jim) with no luck.

At 11:30 A.M. I sent an email to Red... "Hey, just want to let you know I would really like to order a Red One ... Oh, and by the way I did leave message on your phone earlier."

That was one of the longest day's of my life. I was glued to the boards gathering any info I could.

The reports were coming in..... Reservations are up to 20..... up to 40... up to 70. My stomach was churning. I started looking for a flight to Vegas that was leaving right away.

And all the while I'm kicking myself for not flying in on Sunday. Had I been there in person, I'm sure I would of had a very low reservation #, 19 or under. Maybe even in the first ten.

Finally at 4:30 Monday afternoon my phone rings. It's team Red. They said I was the second person to leave a message that morning. And If I wanted in ... they had #81 ready to go? Yes! Definitely.

Since Nab I've regretted not being there to have a lower reservation #."

------------------------

LOL, I won't make that mistake again.

I would be surprised if they even have a order phone at NAB this year. The automated online web ordering system should be set up.

BUT, will Red give the "NAB reservations made in person orders" a preferred place in line? Possibly.

Also, I think a big part of attending NAB is the celebration, meeting and sharing the experience with all the great people here on reduser. How do you put a price on that?

I'll be there first thing Monday.... And that's my advice to you, Tim.

Good Luck!

I'd be at the booth first thing in the morning. Line up outside the expo hall, sprint across the floor, whatever it takes. It's gonna be like the running of the bulls.

Graeme

Is there some reason for current reservation holders to follow this advice? Or is this for the next wave of purchasers?

Will there be something "new" to put your money down on?

And, is there any real reason to bring the "R". I don't want to if I don't actually need it. Airport security looks at me funny when I dig it out of my pocket and try to explain what it is...

You mean RED BULLS. Oh, now wouldn't they be a great sponsor?!

Does this also mean, that Sony and a few others are gonna get the horns?

True, but I could celebrate, meet and share a lot more relaxed knowing that I've got my order placed with as low a number as possible. Not sure how friendly I can be while using my elbows to keep my place in line.

Fair enough.

But when a key Red team member like Graeme advices to go, that should be considered.

Also, Jim has a history of being very fair. I have to wonder how fair it would be to penalize those attending NAB with a place farther back in line as opposed to the poeple who simply woke up in the comfort of there home and used a click of a mouse.

Just thinking out loud.

But, what ever you decide....

I know the Red camera is the right choice.

My brother ran with the bulls in Pamplona this past summer - from his description I think the RED booth might be worse.

By the way "Runners are encouraged to wear white shirts and pants, and wear RED SCARVES and SASH in the traditional Basque way."

It's gonna be like the running of the bulls.

I would do it in person. If the webpage gets clobbered, or they have some kind of technical difficulty, or it doesn't get up until like say 2 in the afternoon you're scrwed.

If I had a choice between sitting at home or madness at NAB...

Madness at NAB, definitely.

Can someone please record this ?

Red crew,
if you press the RED button on Monday morning and capture first arrival of the users & buyers, you might get an interesting shot.
Just a thought.

From what has been said by the RED team here on reduser.net, the reservation numbers will come in the order that the reservations are made (by time), as long as the website works there is no need to go to NAB and order.

Realistically, how likely is it that the RED.COM servers will go down? How many people will log on to reserve a 17,5 K camera at once?

Personally I would loved to be at NAB, but it´s half way around the world from here, and the money NOT spent going there helps buy more assecories - and the money earned, by NOT going helps buying even a bit more....

I really hope those of you who go will share your pictures and videos with us as soon as possible, there will be HUNDREDS of us sitting here, drooling and waiting for updates!

I actually had the same thought. I'd love to see the faces of dozens+ of RED fans as they jog up to the booth to see somebody pointing a RED ONE at them...

You'd have to get the person holding the RED ONE and people running to it too. It would be great if you could kill the lights when they first run in and set up a live 4K projection.

Do it in time laps.. Or at 120fps and play it back with some chariots of fire music

I think Red needs to think about crowd control, like national guard strength.

That's a hell of a junket. I did that a couple of years ago. Got on a plane in Vegas (lugging all my free crap from the show floor) and landed at the airport in my home state at 7am. To save money I flew out of the state capitol, which is a 2 hour drive from my town. Rolled into town at 9 am just in time to open the shop for business. I had been gone for 5 days and saw my co-workers before I got to see my wife. That's just wrong.:angry01:

Hey Rob,
please, confirm me that, when The Monday comes, we can see the GUI (or some sample of) via web?
I think that is the most intriguing mystery, for me...

Brook Willard

Even if the GUI isn't posted by RED, people will be taking pictures of the camera and posting them here... so there's always plan B.

Not only it would be really cool to do that, it would give a great material for "The movie" (if it would be eventually made).
If you guys ever want to make one, it's time to think ahead

fade in...opening of the booth,
-morning coffee's, turning on the RED's, cam body & GUI details, setting up the projector, checking online status,
crew's feelings, jokes and predictions, quick glance at neighbor booths (informal chats & jokes),
-one shot of the clock/watch (dramatic music added later),
-then one static shot from a tripod showing the people appearing behind the corner and coming right to the camera....fade out.

RED is alive.
