ESTIMATED TO BEGIN SHIPPING IN FALL 2016

The DSMC2™ Side Handle has arrived and is completely redesigned for the DSMC2 camera line. Designed for shooters who prefer a compact handheld configuration, the DSMC2 Side Handle offers the most ergonomic handle option—attaching directly to the side of the camera BRAIN®.

The DSMC2 Side Handle features a molded rubber grip and puts primary camera controls right at your fingertips. A primary navigation wheel (front) offers direct control over lens focus, while a secondary navigation wheel (side) supports iris functions. The rotary wheel and D-Pad provide advanced control over menu options directly from the handle. Four customizable camera parameter buttons provide quick access to controls such as exposure, white balance, magnification toggle, and autofocus. Additionally, a stepped encoder offers additional operation customization and lets you incrementally increase or decrease the selected camera parameters.

An intelligent DSMC2 handle wouldn’t be complete without a record button—allowing you to toggle record on/off directly from the handle. On top of an integrated RECORD button, the DSMC2 Side Handle features aMARK FRAME button, empowering you to tag frames while shooting and revisit them later in post production.
NOTE: The DSMC2 Side Handle cannot be used simultaneously with the DSMC2 Outrigger Handle or DSMC2 Sidekick.

Look to Element Technica for some really cool wood options for the replaceable grip.

I'd double check this, but I believe the fine print on the checkout page says (the full amount) when allocated and ready for delivery. My card was just authorized for $1.00.

Correct, Mike. We charge at invoice (ie, once your product is being picked for delivery). We do the $1 auth to confirm valid credit card. That usually is purged by your credit card company in a business day or so...

Yeah, but this one is hard hehe It's how the first side handle should have been like, now we can actually hold it in a safe way with a bigger lens... but the side screen also made it easier to do quick changes when you don't use a touch screen.
Ah, well, I might get a touch and this instead ^_^

Old prototype raven? no ridges in the body...?

ha ha good eye. My desk is a cluster of new and old and everything in between. Sometimes I have people in suits come and visit and they think they walked into a tornado. Then people I actually want to spend time with come in and i can see their faces light up like they just walked into the back room of a candy store.

Definitely. A good chunk of the weight is in the grip , the default gripis a big solid piece of reinforced rubber. The grip was designed with 3rd parties in mind and is incredibly easy to change with one long bolt from the bottom, so expect to see a whole whack of handle options from other companies as well.

Ahh hand grips like Apple Watch bands.. thus may we address both the ergonomics AND vanity of all shooters =) this + Latitude Sidekick = kick-ass hand held configuration that I know I'll love (and my 1st AC will loathe!) ... thought NAB16 would be quiet but this + SDI Jetpack + Redvolt-V are exactly the kind of ecosystem enhancements we've been wanting. Tx!

Good to hear. Something about this design makes me think it will make shooting more intuitive and frequent. A camera that melds with the operator gets used more often, maybe picking up that extra shot or two that you wouldn't otherwise. Looking forward to this!!!

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan. Ergonomics are far better, sure, but it seems to have lost a ton of functionality - way less buttons, no LCD, no hotswap etc. Something like an adapter to be able to use the old side handle would be great, if it's even possible!

Kris Tait
04-17-2016, 04:49 AM
Jarred, congrats on developing such a sick product. In absolute awe of everything rolling out right now. This new side handle looks like...well like everything else rolling at Red at the moment. Fucking amazing. Quick question to silence a few restless natives, will it ever be possible to adapt the dsmc1 side-handle to the new dsmc2 brains?

Why one wouldn't opt for the new design, other than being impatient waiting for fall, is beyond me. But would be nice to settle that discussion once and for all.
Great work, those new batteries are also other-worldly amazing. So. Damn. Sick. Thanks, Kris

For me anyway, the side handle is the better option. You have more control at your fingertips. And if it's like the old style side handle experience, once you get used to using those controls on a regular basis, you really miss them when not available.

Ok, it's an awesome looking sidehandle. Basic button layout, much better/safer grip for sure. This combined with lighter DSMC2-bodies, your new REDVOLT-V makes a lot of sense. To be honest, i think i'm going to miss the REDVOLT in SH, the additional buttons and yes, the display too, in the same way i'll miss the buttons of my REDMOTE. But maybe not that much? Will see. This new SH looks really comfortable and makes DSMC2 complete for me. Great solution.

What would the max weight this can take if we're handholding a fairly packed camera? Not to say it couldn't take a load, but I'm curious since it has the spacing now (love this!) whereas the original handle was directly bolted into the brain.

For something that will be permanently attached to many peoples cameras - I guess many would pay extra to get a (slightly lighter) Magnesium version rather than Aluminium.

It would be great to have that option when the time comes. :-)

Okay looks like I'm writing an article about all the new Red axs. :)

So this side handle looks very cool.

Some questions. It appears that the actual handle is replaceable. How do you remove it?
What is the function of the scroll wheel (reminds me of the eumig mini 5 handle!)
Does it allow you to scroll through menu's or dose it have some other kind of functionality?
What have DSMC2 users been doing for a side handle before now?

The DSMC2 outrigger handle is keyed to only work on the right side. There are two key holes behind the contacts that make it so that the DSMC2 top handle can only be used in one direction. It is the same with the outrigger handle.

"Pogo pins allow run / stop trigger from DSMC2 handles that feature integrated record start/stop buttons and allow handles to be reversed and extend in the direction of the lens."

https://shop.offhollywoodny.com/collections/mounting-support/products/dsmc2-top-plate

Not sure if that would let the outrigger handle go fakie as well..

The DSMC2 outrigger handle is keyed to only work on the right side. There are two key holes behind the contacts that make it so that the DSMC2 top handle can only be used in one direction. It is the same with the outrigger handle.
Got it. It looks like this one will go fakie. http://woodencamera.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=430

If you have a cable-less battery mount and a module with DC in, its easy to hot swap with a p-tap power cable.

1. battery with p-tap is powering camera.
2.put Ptap power cable into fresh battery and plug into DC in
3. Remove old battery (camera is powered by fresh battery now)
4 attach new battery
5 remove p-tap cable
6. don't miss old handle

I love the side handle. Much easier to grab and securely hold the camera with the new design and the focus and iris controls with EF lenses make run and gun really easy.

Yes they do, I have Nikon G lenses, and with the 85, 35 and also older like the 17-35 all work well.

Thanks. I have 14-24 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 (non IS), 70-200 f4 and the 60mm Macro. Contemplating the side handle and the EVF OLED. I tend to only shoot on tripod or gimbal stabelizer or slider. But it seems to me, so muchof my favorite footage (like Mark Toia's) is pure hand held, on shoulder or against body... the handle and evf seem crucial to that shooting style.

Jon Dishler
10-08-2016, 10:12 PM
Yeah, I have the EVF and the side handle, nice combination, on tripod or off in bright daylight. Indoors the 14-24 is my favorite lens but not filter friendly. Also have used the 70-200 VRII 2.8 but it is pretty heavy for hand holding. The focus on the side handle is very smooth especially with the G lenses like the 85 1.4.

Anyone know if there is something like this for the DSMC1 cameras? The original side handle is ok - with battery and all - but not as practical (and sexy) as this one...
Could it be possible?

Mark Andersen

The new side handle is DSMC2 only. There is no way to attach it to a DSMC1 body, let alone actually have it be functional.

It looks like the side handle doesn't rotate? So how does it feel when holding at waist height and looking down on the camera?

Also is there an up to date list of supported lenses that can be driven by the electronic focus? There was a thread in 2012 with a list of lenses, EF ones, but that is perhaps well out of date. I'm thinking of the newer sigma art ranges and so on?

I'm traditionally all manual but this offers some interesting possibilities.

I initially was concerned about the fixed handle as a handheld operator. However, it had the opposite effect. The mix of functionality and sturdiness really opened up the option for handheld use. Before the handle, I felt way more comfortable with this camera on sticks, which is completely out of character for me. The side handle has some preset hot keys which I didn't even need to swap. Perfect setup.

The lens control varies lens to lens, but like you said, I see that as more of a bonus, then a necessity. One note, the Global dynamics lens, which I was questioning if I should of bought it before the side handle, is now a go to lens for handheld.

Ergonomics look great on this handle, and it seems like it's sales like hot cakes!

For me, I really liked the screen on the old handle, and some more configurable buttons, especially the screen, Now I read this handle doesn't work with the sidekick either, so there is basically no way of not using the touch screen LCD to see info, correct?

Would be cool to see an upgraded version with a small screen and maybe the ability to rotate the handle, anyone feeling/wanting the same? another option is maybe to create a fusion between a sidekick and the side handle?

Hi Filpe, thanks, I know you can control everything from the handle, but on the sidekick you have a screen so you don't have to look at the LCD touch screen, on the old handle you also had a screen and from what I can tell you also had more programable buttons? Would also be nice to have the option to rotate it.

what I'm saying is, this model is great, but would be great if RED could offer a model with a screen and an option to rotate, I'm sure some will be willing to pay a bit extra for that.

The side handle is truly amazing... like way better than I thought it would be! I was like... yeah, I don't know...

But then when I got it and tried it out...:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: amazing!

I barely use the touch screen menu anymore... so much easier and WAY faster to navigate everything with the side handle! And the ergonomics of it are soooo nice. I didn't think I would like it this much. But I like it more everyday.

But I haven't heard rumors or teases of any yet...

Ok,

I have to say that the new Side Handle exceeded my expectations by far in all fronts... Except the battery thing, but you can't have it all can you?

I carried the Helium walking around for a long while and the Grip felt very well crafted, and yes you can feel the difference in weight with the Wooden Grip for GDU, it's way lither and while gives ahed and distinct dry feel in your hand, vs the softer feel of the Rubber one, it just fills perfect, and while I still some how prefer the rubberized grip in many situations, the wooden grip looks also very classy... :)

The controls on the Handle are very responsive, and very well placed, the Focus wheel is fast and smooth, and focusing any electronic lens is a beauty... Love this thing!!

Still mot working after re-initializing the lens per the ops guide instructions. I can see the camera remapping the focus points, but the wheel still doesn't work. I also performed a factory reset, still no go. Time to send in a log file or is there more troubleshooting I can try? Thanks!

I've dismounted the lens but not side handle. I'll give that a shot, thanks!

Also, I've tried remapping the focus wheel but that's not an option in advanced settings, and ops guide gives the same indication. But there could definitely be something I'm missing.

I've a quick question about the side handle.

How robust is the physical connection to the brain, i'm still waiting for my E-W so i don't have direct experience but looking at photos the bolts are pretty small and they don't travel in so far. So my concern would be wanting to hold the brain/lens via the side handle and that then breaking off. I know the description says 30lb but looking at the connections i'd be a little doubtful?

thanks

This is actually the most SOLIDLY connected Handle I have ever used on any camera, except for those of which the Handle is actually part of the Body... So worry NOT about anything with this one, it's far more robustly connected then the original DSMC handle by a very long shot... :)

As you can see for the pictures, it has 4 bolts connecting it to the actual Brain, and it's surface of contact with the Brain is huge, hence it's very solid grip to the body and capacity to hold what ever weight you can hold, that I am sure of.

Yeah, the only thing preventing me from using the finger wheel for focus (on DSMC1 sidehandle), was that it was incredibly slow... And it doesn't matter how fast you turn the wheel; it almost makes it less responsive the faster you turned.

OH no... sorry, I meant using the finger wheel (of the DSMC1 side handle) to control the focus of EF lenses... I'm gonna add a quote to my previous post to hopefully avoid future confusion (and, yes, I know this is a DSMC2 sidehandle thread, but it's the same issue).

(sidenote: I'd totally prefer to use a DSMC2-styled sidehandle than the DSMC1 one though... that'd be rad).

Hey,

I will follow up on this old post, showing you guys a new product that I've helped develop: an extension/relocation kit for the DSMC2 Side Handle.

https://orange-sight.myshopify.com/

It features a 25" cable/mounting plates, and a flexible mount solution for the side handle. It works and it's very useful.
I love the fact that, with the supported lenses, you get basically a follow focus solution. As well as all the other side handle functions.
A
