Adult film studio Digital Playground says it's started filming movies with RED One digital cameras which purport to offer four times the resolution of a regular high-def camera.

In a statement released today, the studio says the RED One camera was used in the Fox studio release Jumper and will be employed in two upcoming Steven Spielberg movies.

ick.

I'm thinking that porn is the one industry which might not benefit from the extra resolution from this camera. Either that or they are going to need a lesson in 'soft lighting' real quick.

My eyes - they burn!!!

HD never caught on in the porn industry (which usually drives technical innovation; VHS, web-video...), mainly because in that resolution it really shows what quick turn-around times they have.

4k porn? Don't really think so...

porn doesnt need more rez, but if given a choice, I always want WHATEVER im watching to look as good as possible. If some porn director decides he wants to be ambitious and give his flick some production value, more power to 'em :)

Several San Francisco porn producers are already using RED in their productions. They cannot provide the full 4K at this time and even the full 2K is problematic because they cannot get Blue Ray disc duplication companies to produce Blue Ray discs for them and there is little demand for expensive Blue ray porn at this time. Also, online consumers do not want slow 4K or even 2K downloads. But the RED camera is in use. Porn producers will be the largest customers of RED because they produce over 150,000 porn movies every year and they can easily afford RED.

Steven Spielberg is using RED even though he could use any camera including film, Dalsa, F35 and D20. Then again, he has a reputation for stealing plots and ideas from other artists and producers. His first blockbustger ET was a script stolen from famous Indian director Satyajit Ray. One of the latest publicised theft was "Small Soldiers" from Gregory Grant. Now he may be trying to duplicate Soderberg's success with Che by using RED. Spielberg will be the best publicity yet for RED. Now RED is everywhere including big hollywood studios. Congrats Jim.

It's not about what you can sell five months from now. It's about the two years down the road. The shooting resolution has NOTHING to do with the Blu-Ray duplication issues which have already been resolved as the companies are all going to Asian replicators like they have in the past and there are authoring studios that do work exclusively for the adult entertainment industry. The post workflow IS the big issue right now and that will change now that RED, Apple, and Adobe are getting their respective ducks in line.

About time!

At the dawn of photography there were tons of beautiful nudes etc. At the dawn of digital cinema, the subject matter is a lot more geeky... sad!

Personally I think 35mm DOF will make for beautiful naked people and all the people saying 4K is not a good medium will be proved dead wrong. If it means makeup, camerawork and lighting needs to be taken to a higher level, great.

If the porn industry buys a ton of Reds, awesome! That's more R&D money for the company to push cinema further. More camera bodies available, etc, etc.

Porn and indie cinema are often allied. Look at Japan in the 70's... that was my girlfriend's thesis anyway ;)

And Joone, I agree, best first post ever!

In other words, RED is the ultimate camera for web and DVD distribution.

That's really interesting. Are you saying RED footage would compress to h.264 to a smaller size with better looking results than other cameras? Is there a way to test and prove this idea?

Bruce is right. they'll adapt. in fact their needs are so much more extreme that whatever techniques they come up with for making their actors "ahem" look better will probably end up helping productions in the clean world :) LOL

cleaner the source the easier it is to compress. Grain and noise make it harder to keep the file sizes small and the quality high.

yes, it's amazing with encoding and down-converting and definitely better than any other hd camera they are using. if used properly.

Randomness is the enemy of compression. Less noise = better compression.

Shoot something on a camera with two different gain settings, see which one compresses better with the same compressor setting. I await your results.:shifty:

The little I know Rado - I can imagine him putting Scarlet in the "full-auto" mode in 120 FPS straight to 256 GB HDD on a tripod, while he gets much closer to the "subject/s"... That way he gets the best of both worlds - and great slow-motion shots too...

Seriously, look at the adult films of Andrew Blake. There's some really nice 35mm photography in those works.
It's not about resolution, but that classy look you can get. The adult market is full of crappy cheap amateur stuff. The impact Red will have in this area will be huge! And as always, porn will contribute a lot to the technology market, business-wise.
And I'm pretty sure something similar might happen to 3D btw.

It's difficult to do it. Those guys at the adult film studios deserve some more respect. It's not a second option, it's actually a very profitable specialization.

I wonder how the model of higher prod. value over low cost productions can survive, after the plunge it took during the VHS era.

Wow. Am I the first one that's going to comment about the trailer Joone posted? Based on what I saw I think the Red was well utilized in, "Heat". It suffers from the typical cinematography you see in porn, but the "extra" resolution didn't "expose" any horrible flaws...

Wow. Am I the first one that's going to comment about the trailer Joone posted? ...

Good point, we forgot about that... :clown2:

In my view it was better than average. I think the camera did add significantly to production qualities and certainly there was more than average attention to lighting, camera work, editing and grading. I think the use of Red was a good choice for the "job" and improved the overall result significantly.

I liked the VFX eye candy too.
