I've got one coming. I ordered during NAB, so I don't know when they are going to show up.

I know Marty ordered 2. I have no idea if Koerner has ordered any, but I'll find out this week.

I'm in Portland. I know there are half a dozen other Portland Reds. Maybe we could have a big Red meeting with all the Reds from Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, BC and get a few Red employees to come out to teach us stuff.

I am in the Lynnwood area and I am planning on getting a RED very soon. It would be great to set up some meetings to get to know all the local Seattle-Portland/WA REDUSERS.

Any one have ideas for a good meeting location? I've rented out medium sized rooms at the UW campus before and they work great. They also come equiped with Canon Realis HD projectors. The images from those looks pretty darn sharp (through DVI)

Yeah a pacific nw Red convention/meeting would draw quite a few folks. I'm in Portland and I think the rental market here will be strong.

If you're talking meeting locations, it's usually most fair to triangulate the central location between all of the people involved... weighted for the number of people in each area of course. So if we only take Portland/Seattleites, then we'd have to mix it up in Southern Washington... which of course blows that idea out of the water because who wants to hang out in Southern Washington? It's even worse if we add Idaho into the mix because then we'll end up somewhere in the mouth of a smoking volcano. Maybe Seattle would be best since it has so much to shoot, and then we could absorb the BC people as well.

Yeah, the show was great! Ted was awesome...

I have some photos from the event if you want to check them out here:

http://homepage.mac.com/mindcastle/apple_fcp_tour/

I thought the first half of the presentation was great...however, I had one complaint about the Color app....so Apple makes a great new add on to FCP2 and then tells all their teachers to just tell people to use 'auto balace' instead of really learning how to color grade footage. I was hoping for a bit more. Otherwise, awesome demo....and RED blew everyone away. The PJ demo was exceptional.

We could plan on setting up a couple meetings before the cams ship just to get to know everyone, etc. and also talk about what we are all planning on shooting when the cams to ship....and how glorious it will all be in 4K...

Michael Ragen
05-24-2007, 02:03 AM
It would be nice to all meet up before the cameras ship. Mr. Summers and I live very close to Capitol Hill if that would work for people. It would be nice to discuss our personal camera configurations and what not before we all take the plunge. Personally I'll take any excuse to sit around and drink coffee (or vodka) while discussing cameras... in fact that's pretty much what I do while I'm not working.

Vita is a good place for coffee. It's between 10th and 11th on Pike St.

I have a friend that lives nearby that works at Harborview that would love to meet some other Redites. He currently owns more cameras than I can count (8mm, 16mm, 35mm, 65mm, etc) but is considering getting a Red.

Either July weekend is fine, but please either morning or evening; not smack in the middle of the day.

I'm training for a 435 mile bike ride that starts August 4th with two of my kids, and I'm going to be riding probably 70+ miles both days those weekends, so if it's a middle of the day meet, I can't come. I imagine there are other folks who don't want to set aside their whole day's schedule to this either.

Breakfast or early evening would be great. *smiles*

I propose the first ever Seattle/Portland RED meeting.

Saturday, July 14, 8:30-10 AM -- that's 90 minutes.

Hours
Monday - Friday: 6am - 11pm
Saturday - Sunday: 7am - 11pm
Free Wi-fi for customers

Start on time. Hang out afterwards. *smiles*

a) If we need to adjust the time a little, say so. Otherwise, 8:30 - 10 am.

b) I'm starting us this early, so people can have the day for, well, for having their day. Don't know about y'all, but I've got stuff to do. *grins*

c) Also, keeping the meeting proper to 90 minutes. That's plenty of time to do whatever we're going to do as a group. Everyone who wants to can hang out afterwards, swap phone numbers and stuff. I probably will myself, but short meetings make for happy meetings.

If you're in, please RSVP below so we can get a count.

Thank you everyone,

I have a long list of people wanting to rent REDs around the country so if anyone is interested in that let me know.

We have 2 REDs on order and deadmike is part of our company as well so his will be rented out when he's not using it. The demand is going to be very high for low numbered REDs so you may be able to make some dough back in the first few months.

I live in the Alki Area. Why don't we all meet at the beach,,,, how LALA is that!!!

I'm sorry about the three buses thing for you. Perhaps you can car pool with someone. If you read back in the thread, there were already multiple suggestions for this specific coffee house before I set the location. *smiles*

Maybe next time we could meet at the beach. On the other hand, my kids and I ride our bicycles up and down Alki fairly frequently, and while parking may be rough on Capital Hill -- I think all one needs to do, frankly, is park in a lot and pay a fee -- I know for sure that driving onto Alki Beach on Sunday at noon is a stone cold bitch. Like twenty minutes sometimes just to make it on the one road through traffic. Everyone and their mother is trying to get down to the beach, precisely because it is so pretty. And not everyone already lives there, or can ride their bicycle in. *sighs*

So, this time we're meeting where we're meeting. But everyone should bring their ideas for where we meet next time to this meeting, and part of what we can do is quickly figure out our next meeting location. One nice thing about meeting in Seattle is, we're central for both Portland and Vancouver. Hey -- someone should make sure Vancouver knows we're having this meet-up. Hmm, I'll do it, later today.

If anyone wants to contact me off-line (not through a private message here), I'm reachable at jwe at bastardzen dot org.

Let's have a LOT of people show up. We'll have our shipping schedule by then. It's going to be worth showing up.

People will have stuff to talk about: cooperation and arrangements to set up, shooting schedules to start coordinating, fall back plans to make (e.g.:if your camera hiccups you can borrow mine while it's in the shop during October if during November you'll do the same for me while I'm shooting), and much, much more.

You're not going to want to miss it.

SO PLEASE LET US KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO BE THERE. User Groups are what makes life easier for everyone. Not to mention it's fun, getting to know the girls and guys foresighted enough to buy RED. Some of us have will have been waiting a year and a half by the time we get our cameras. *laughs* It's going to be great, so come hang out with other people at least somewhat similar to yourself. Damn, that's a scary thought.

The North West RED Users Group -- nominations are NOW OPEN for a better name -- may someday save your ass by getting a camera or part to you in minutes to hours. Worst case, some User Group member might have to give a PA or even personally drive you a part or a lens or a camera, but that's three hours max [not counting border delays] and that's hella faster than FedEx and cheaper than same-day air delivery up from RED central. Or perhaps you just need someone who knows the camera even better than you do because you're stuck and you need them now and on set. That's what User Groups are made for.

I love our global community here on reduser.net, but it's virtual. User Groups are physical. You can make friends in person, hang out on each others shoots, grab coffee, teach each other tricks using the actual camera or editing software right there in your very hands.

I've always loved User Groups, the ones where I'm highly competent, where I'm a raw beginner, and where I'm somewhere in between. Everyone wins, because the community as a whole keeps getting stronger.

Support your local Users Group. Come to our first meeting; be a plank-owner!

And please let us know you're attending. Also, please attend! *smiles*

Suffice to say you'd never see me up before noon on a weekend, though, or heck most days of the week that's also true. I just prefer to wake up later and stay up later.

Meeting recap:

It was nice to meet everyone. Its good to have such a diverse group of people from different technical backgrounds. It will be cool to see what kind of projects come out once all the cameras start shipping.

At the meeting we talked about potential workflow issues, and ideas, etc. Also, about what type of lens packages/ choices would work well. TJ enlighteded us with some pretty funny and interesting stories...:) and all in all, it was a great meeting.

Basically....main consensus....its GOOD that they are doing the beta testing because none of us want a partially functioning RED. And the beta tests will most definitely make it better for the res holders. I am hoping that the early tests will help in developing an efficient workflow, camera functions, and then learning how far you can really push the image. etc.

Overall, good meeting. lets start planning another.

Billy! Gibby mentioned you when I saw him last week. Did the birth go well? It'd be fun to come up to Seattle and meet you.

Dude's, haven't even had time to check dis chit. Between my baby boy, remodeling the house and constantly shipping me and #13 up and down the westcoast (mostly LA) I've been blind to most of these threads.

As far booze goes...I like Crystal.

As far as women...I'm happy.

You guys want to check #13...lemeno...we'll make it happen!

Shawn...give me a shout bro!

Are there any rules against setting up a tripod at pike place market and shooting RED?

would be a great place to shoot, but I guess we're all past that test shooting point.

I've never been yelled at about shooting on a tripod around there, but there may be laws(I just like to pretend they don't exist). Just make sure you don't point your camera a federal building down there... It's not fun. Hopefully there will be another Red on the block up here next month.

I get my RED mid January.

I'm #346, so I'm expecting to receive my letter in the next week or so.

Cinematographer Christopher Bell (whose own RED # is up in the 2Ks) are going to work together. He has primes, while I'll have a camera. Together, we're going to work out a work flow, and make my camera and his skills, lenses, sticks, and so on, available.

This spring once his camera shows up, we'll have two available. Obviously, there will be others in town by then.

I'll be using mine occasionally to shoot small spots, and eventually to shoot a documentary, but mostly it will be available to the rental market.

Cheers,

Finner

I am waiting for a RED camera. It won't arrive until June. Can anyone lend me one at low cost for making a feature movie? When I get the camera, you can have mine for twice the amount of time for free.

We're hosting a red brownbag on Thursday. No camera will be there, but we will have a speaker talk about benefits, issues, and workflow. Another speaker will talk about hardware and storage. These are local folks with roots in Seattle, not famous in any way. Just excited for their Red to come like you...

There will be no suprises, if you've been reading the forum, but a nice in person presentation summing up what Red means to our niche market and sharing what we've learned in the wee hours of the morning....

Unfortunatelly, there's limited space since our members and others bring us to 20 people coming so far. Send an e-mail to info@nwfilmclub.com to check if there's still space. Sorry for the late notice...

If you want to show off your camera, we'll buy you lunch...

Pike's place is not camera crew friendly unless you have obtained permission in advance.

Here is the current Seattle Film Manual, with everything you would want to know about filming in Seattle. http://www.seattle.gov/filmoffice/filmmanual2007.htm

That list of filming restrictions has so many glaring anti-constitutional aspects, it's scary. No filming allowed in public places without a $25 permit... no freedom of speech for the poor. Having to send a script to the police department before being allowed to use their equipment or logo... discrimination, and infringement on freedom of speech. No night-time film making in residential areas and during certain days of the year... more limitations on freedom of speech. No weapons (not even simulated ones) in a public space... infringement on the right to bear arms.

Let's all start a petition for freedom to create art in public spaces!

Actually Lowkus you can film hand held in public places. The pike mkt is private property. Permit allows you to disrupt sidewalk and possibly vehicle traffic with dolly, lighting etc.

It's been a while, haven't heard from the early RED user group forming up here. We did exchange phones etc. Got our camera, have shot first spot with it and some other work.
Have hook up for HD lens in 2K and Canon FD glass with Muse adapter for 4K.... We should all try to get together for traditional Seattle Latte somewhere and do a bit of show n tell.

I tried to spur a get-together recently, but there were few responses. I think they aren't looking at this area of the site. You can certainly try again though; I would like to meet some of the locals.

Hey there, I am totally new to the boards (post #2), and as green as the fields when it comes to REDs. I am leaving one profession to get into film and camera work. I am moving to Portland from Southern Oregon in the next month and would love to come up to Seattle area to meet people and do anything I can to get to know RED cameras and the users who use them. I am very eager to learn and would be very thankful to be included in a get together!!

I don't think you can legally film in public places, even hand-holding the camera. Here's the list from the Seattle Mayor's Film Office...

----------------------------------
YOU WILL NEED A PERMIT IF:
• Traffic will be interrupted on City streets.
• Pedestrian traffic on sidewalks will be interrupted.
• A tri-pod or dolly is used on sidewalks or streets.
• Wires or cables run across or over sidewalks.
• A generator is used on a sidewalk or street.
• Filming takes place on public property.
• Public parking will be impacted
----------------------------------

It's that second-to-last bullet point saying "Filming takes place on public property", which suggests that a permit is required to film in public areas of Seattle, since sidewalks and streets are public property. Unless your argument is that the filming equipment must be "on" the property, as in physically making contact with the public property.

I'm thinking the cops might also say that since the camera is huge and obvious, it is an interruption to traffic and pedestrians because the people will slow down and stop to look at it.

Hello Seattle RED users.

I would just like to introduce myself to the forum and tell you a little about what I am doing.

I am part of a new facility in Seattle called LightPress.

We have just bought a 4K Quantel iQ Pablo system complete with Neo panel. The system is the only one in the Northwest and the only system that can actually play 4K. It fully supports native R3D, and infact we have already completed a couple of Red shot projects.

We are looking at doing some 3D stereoscopic projects, and would like to help any of you guys in any post production or color correction you may need.

We are always happy to do tests, and would love to show any of you our facility, introduce you to our staff, and present our technology to you.

As well as the Quantel system we have a Davinci 2K, telecine, HDCam SR, HDCam, DVCProHD, DigiBeta, HDV, Final Cut Pro with Color and tangent panels.

If anyone is interested in a tour about what we are doing please contact me off the list.

Where are you guys located? Who's behind it? Quantel!?!?!?

Hi Mike, (and others)

Sorry for the delay in replying.

We are LightPress, and are on Western Avenue in Seattle. I am nothing to do with Quantel other than I own one of their machines.

Here we have a 4K Quantel iQ with Neo panel. It is at the time of this posting the only system here in Seattle that can actually play 4K files. It also supports 3D Stereoscopic output. Previously I worked for Flyingspot here in Seattle on an older Quantel eQ.

We have a DaVinci, telecine, Final Cut with Color and tangent panels, HDCamSR, HDCam, DVCProHD, HDV, DigiBeta, Beta SP, and DV.

We have completed several Red projects this year and have not run into any problems.

We have mixed R3D files with 16mm film. We can work with pretty much any format, and we can pretty much deliver any deliverable.

Our doors are always open for anyone that wishes to visit or ask questions. We will even run tests for you if you are unsure of anything. We are also willing to explain what we are doing.

We want to push this camera in town too. There are some fantastic DP's here, and the way I look at it is if you are busy, we will probably be busy.

Kind Regards

Shane
