View Full Version : Upgrade to Build 16 or wait?

I have a shoot coming up in a week. Should I upgrade to B 16 or hold off since I assume it will still be in beta a week from now? Or should I just wait and see?

If I were you (I am not)... I would make the leap to build 16 as quickly as possible to make sure I was comfortable with the changes before a big shoot. You won't ever want to go back. The only question is whether or not you will have enough time to get used to how it all works.

Conventional wisdom would be to wait until AFTER your shoot. Don't want any nasty surprises when you're under the gun.

Build 16 is not legal to take Risk ?

Like the Kids at age of 16 ?

Do we need to wait Build 18 ?

Not all the post tools are updated from what I understand and in particular anyone who is only running PC would not be advised to load up B16 until the new Redcine becomes available.

This is great news to the ones who have been dying to upgrade to B16...not.:ninja:

I don't know if this has been answered yet or not, but can you revert back to 15 after installing 16?

Jim, I can def. understand where your coming from, we are all EXSTATIC! to get B16, but to quote you earlier this morning:

* New .R3D file format - requires the use of new versions of QuickTime Component, RED ALERT and REDCINE (not currently available)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is the new R3D format is unsupported by the preceeding software essentially until the new versions of QT, RedAlert, and RedCine are released?
Don't get me wrong, regardless I will start to stockpile footage:biggrin:

No, you can't.

As far as I know only RedCine is yet to be upgraded in order to support B16. The other programs have already been updated to support B16 in the newest versions.

I am waiting until at least next week. I don't have any shoots scheduled before then and I'll be at Cinegear anyway so why do I need to rush? I'll let the other impatient people download away and take the risk.

Cross, you need newer versions of Redcine, Red Alert and FC Log and Transfer because it's a new form of r3d.

If it was my own project I'd upgrade in a heartbeat, but it's a friend who's renting the camera, and I won't be able to be there the whole shoot.

Offhollywood, thanks for pointing that out. I'll have to talk to them about post and see if they're planning a scratch finish.

Im starting a feature Tuesday next week and we are doing the post in Scratch. Our DP is not thrilled about changing to B16 since we did all our testing in B15 including a filmout that is coming out on Friday.

I want to do it in B16, but I am getting a hard time convincing other people involved in the production.

What are the cons and the pros on this decision?

Alpha testers, collective wisdom, help me out on this one. :help:

Julian,

Scratch does not yet support B16 footage. That could be a big reason to not upgrade for this shoot. All depends on scheduling, I suppose.

Jeff,

I read that Scratch would work once it the build is stable, but how long could this be? Guesstimating works.

Guys,

Obviously we are working hard to support B16. But it is still ALPHA. It is going to the *first* round of Beta in a day.

I understand everyone's excitement over B16. We're excited too. But what's more important - being able to say you used B16, or keeping a client?

Don't lose sight of the fact that B15 looks awesome too!

Upgrading to B16 for a deadline-driven production shoot if your chosen post tools don't support it is madness.

Support in SCRATCH will happen soon. Give it a week or two for chrissake. Sheesh!

Luki,

Thank you for your answer. You are absolutely right. We will do it on B15.

But there is still a part of me that still wants to store all the data on B16 until we can start posting in Scratch.

This is a really rough call.

Julian,
B16 is amazing. You can see for yourself in the next few days...
There are only two downside (imho): time and software.
Time because you need a little time to get comfortable with all the things (not too much - I think a couple of days of hard testing).
Software because you have "only" RedAlert and Qt proxies by now. Not Scratch yet, no Redcine. I am a rude fanboy of Redcine... and I miss it a lot.
On the other hand you have a new camera, believe me, a brand new tool.
At no charge.

My personal conclusion:
If you have some time to test the build without hurry until you get comfortable AND you can start working to the feature using the Qt proxies to check the daylies (giving Assimilate the right time - 1/2 months? - to fine tune the compatibility) go for the 16.
Otherwise... Build 15, the next feature will be the "B16" one!

Just my two cent.

This is not a Movie (not trying to be a jerk, that is the title)

Corrado,

I could do what you are concluding, besides having to convince the rest of the team on this film. In your opinion how much does it improve function and image? Is the juice worth the squeeze?

BTW Forza Azurre!

Yes, imho, the juice worth the squeeze. But you can wait and check for yourself.
I think that the "footage" section will arise with a lot of clips in the near future...

Julian,

Shouldn't you let the DP decide? If he does not want to upgrade, you should respect that decision, imho.

I do understand your excitement, but wouldn't want to risk starting shooting with a DP that is uncomfortable with his main tool.

I really want to upgrade my camera.. however i just keep getting work unfortunately..Hopefully back-end support will be close behind

Martin,

My DP is going to decide, but I have to give a full rounded opinion which has both the privilage and the responsability to weight in the decision. Also, this is something where the post team is going to have a lot of issues (maybe more than the DP).

I would never impose tools that my DP would not want to work with.

will we get quicktime proxies we could use in fcp to edit and see?

will we get to see the r3d files in red cine?

will we get to see the r3d files in red alert?

--------

why can't we go back to build 15?

when will the crimson dude catch up? was he in the loop with the alpha boys?
