I didn't know where to post this so I started a new thread. Congrats Brook on your FAQ page above. This is what we've needed all along, and I can see this is going to be a fantastic compilation.

I was especially impressed by your resolution comparison examples - I plan to use this to win a few arguments, hehe. Let me know if you'd like any 4K scans of various Kodak stocks. The company I work for just got a 4K Spirit and are in the process of shooting tests.

Great work!

Thanks so much for all the time and effort to date Brook. I can confidently predict many many people will be referencing your FAQ to Producers, Clients, Directors etc to inform and sell, not just RED but broader format and acquisition options.
Again, thanks very much for now and in advance for all the work yet to be done.

That is a class act Brook, really good stuff! I don't think anyone else could have put it any clearer than that. I really liked the Film comparisons; I've been looking for something like this for a long time. I'd say we all owe Brook a round of cold ones some time.

Brook, you are on your way to possibly the single Most Significant contribution the reduser board has seen.

I love it.

Thanks so much!

Well done Brook. This is an extremely well thought out and formatted piece of information. Even for the most knowledgable of us, this will be invaluable as material to help sell this techonology to the masses. Cheers.

I've already shot this link over to several people I am trying to get up to speed on Red and workflow/shooting issues. This should be a wonderful resource for us, Brook, and as our collective knowledge base grows (NAB!), this will be an indespensable resource. Here's our quality-controlled wiki!

Good clarity on the DoF explanation, too. Great contribution, Brook.

Thanks Brook! This'll definently help newcomers! And people who just haven't been able to understand things untill now.

Did you get asked these questions ALL THE TIME?

Michael Hastings

I agree with everyone - great job.
Where should we post questions for the faq?

My question which I haven't seen answered but maybe it has is:

What comes out live from the SDI ports? Just a Raw image or is there, or can there be, any white balance, gamma, etc., knee applied? Somebody asked about live use and that would be important to know.

Very nice, thanks so much for all the time spent on this. Its really useful.

Regards
Rory

Brook, your mojo knows no bounds! For those of us that make our nut in post, we often get weird looks from people when we try to extol the virtues of a camera. You've created an immensely useful tool - my many thanks. And look at those sexy crows feet on milk girl!

Seriously, though, this may not be something you want to show actors. Many prominent TV actors have already complained about the clarity of HD. They are very used to the "softness" of a film scan hiding those age lines. Hollywood and vanity: it makes the world go 'round.

The best way to master the RED details is to preach it at NAB.
You'll will be mobbed so don't forget the throat lozenges!

Great FAQ to start and don't forget to sign a book deal.
The publishers will be in N259 on Friday at 9:AM
I'll try to get to you in the booth on Tuesday.

And remember to skip the food in Barstow,

Rosco

Thanks for all the kind words, guys. I really appreciate it. :)

It's obviously just a start... I'll fill in more as time allows. We've been needing a FAQ for a while now, this will definitely help in the coming weeks. I know many of you are far more knowledgable than I, so if there are parts that you'd like to see added or improved upon... say the word.

A lot is going to change here next week. All of a sudden there will be dozens of newcomers and instant experts here to ask us about [and tell us about] the RED ONE. As we grow here after NAB, it'll be nice to never argue about DOF again.:)

You guys are great. More to come...

I'm just back home after a really hard week, I'm relaxing reading your FAQ and waiting for my LasVegas flight... less then 40 hours!!!!!
see you all @ NAB!

Brooke!

Many thanks for the info and the time you've put into the FAQ so far - it'll be great to have this all in one place.

One thing has been bugging me a little in the film scan/Mysterium comparison. These tests compare the Mysterium sensor in a brightly lit exterior scene to high speed film stock in dimly lit, interior scenes. Now, I'm sure we'd still see grain with 4k scanned/cropped slower stocks in a comparable scene, but nothing like this!

Thanks again - I'll probably be using this FAQ as my manual. Hey - maybe Red can just print it once it's finished!

That's been bothering me as well. Unfortunately, I'm currently limited by the DPX files I have stored on my personal hard drive. I've been talking with a fellow forum member who should be able to provide 4K DPX scans for the FAQ in the coming weeks.

As for selecting the stock, I'll choose based on whatever Mysterium's "native" speed works out to be. I exposed my tests at 320 ASA on 5218 and 7218... I expect that to be the most common speed for RED shooters. We won't know much about the sensor's speed until Monday.
