Yes will need to rent the F out of this one. Its basically my wifes new car... that now all of a sudden, sometime between dinner and bed time turned into a little white box. So having it sitting at the office is not really an option. :)

So:

Im guessing red sells off this batch this early partly as a field test and partly as proof of concept so I think it would be odd to let 50 some cameras out and try keep a leash on them.

Ben, I had the same thought this morning... but it's also a tough one for Red, Ho do you offer it; in addition, or in place of our position in line for Vista? How far down the line do you go? What of people who were waiting specifically for S35? Also it is not cheap. It's not for everyone. Like Jarred said, Vista is hard. The fact it virtually the same camera as Panavision makes me feel happy about my purchase.

I'm sure there is a good story behind these Helium sensor and their development, they really came out of nowhere (to me).

Sad thing is as I need 8K for my current projects, my forged weapon will sit now until my Vista is allocated.

John, my Helium will be primarily for personal projects, but I may be open to renting it on short term projects in Toronto AREA ONLY. Contact me at michaelds@digitalcrossing.ca Thanks for the thread.

Congrats all! 8K in s35 sounds amazing! Weapon in 6K larger than s35 sounds amazing. VV Weapon in 8K sounds amazing. Bottom line... RED continues to listen and cater to all it's customer's shooting requirements. THAT is amazing and refreshing! For those still waiting for cameras. Trust me... it's worth the wait. Also don't look at the short term. Once you get the camera in hand it's likely you will be a user for life.

Sadly no... but I will stop whining for a moment and hope that some great side by side comparisons can be made between Helium 8K, Weapon 6K and also Weapon 8KVV. That would be so great. I don't want to pressure Phil since he is away working hard directing but someone should be able to put this together.

If not then after working on Transformers all day maybe I can shoot something here in Detroit if people get me Helium and 8KVV. Got lots of Weapon 6Ks on this show......!!!

Great to see the 8K Helium shipping in the limited edition 'Storm Trooper' - congrats to the initial 'Helium Squad'

MammothHD will be launching our 8K Gallery in a few weeks (as soon as footage starts arriving...) a lot of our repped talentbase were able to get their orders in for Helium so their Heliums should start arriving in their hands in the few days and of course several more are in line for the 8K VV/Dragon. Really looking forward to the MHD 8K Galleries - as I've been planning this since the announcement on RED 8K at the 2015 NAB... so batten down the hatches and let the 8K rip!

John you can take me off this list.

As I pass on this one. Just got an email from red london where they explain that they will try to allocate a helium for me and will get back to me about that next week... I thought these where ready to ship.

Then with Jareds later post stating that the VV sensors we bought into about a year ago are probably not going to ship any time soon and instead we will get helium as a placeholder in october. So I can not really justify paying 60k euro to have 2 heliums.

So some other happy soul will get an allocation email soon I guess.

Allready have some bookings end of month that I possibly can transfer to sombody else.

Hello Helium Squad,
Erich at DC Camera has been working overtime providing us some great R3D's to chew on. Question came up: What is the minimum RC for 6KHD 96fps?

Can any of you guys give us some insights as to what you are seeing for allowed max frame rates/RC? Let's say at 6KHD and 8KHD

Thanks!

Any chance any of the Helium Squad can fire it up and tell us what the max Frame Rate is at 6KHD/8KHD and minimum RC is? I have a project that requires high frame rate and am looking at Helium as a rental option. Thanks!

It's 60fps in 8K and 80fps in 6k.

Anyone in Australia with a Helium? Looking to rent.

Elsie N
08-12-2016, 03:55 AM
Am I missing something here but it seems that the Helium at 6KHD has less top frame rate than Weapon or Dragon. I don't have the numbers in front of me. Anyone?

My understanding was that the data rate moved from Dragon 200mbs to Weapon 300mbs - like a 50% improvement. So it would follow that the Frame Rates and RC's would also improve along that same line. True?

I've seen suggestions that the WEAPON MG will be able to be fitted with the 8k Helium sensor. If that be the case and assuming no change in boards, that is what may limit the Helium.

On the other hand, when installed in the CF WEAPON it may be possible to generate the numbers you quote.

We will be using prototype tech from the same "folks" that we have used to project 4K DCI back in 2005 for the Kurosawa project... ;o)
Hopefully we will be getting more make / models as we move along, so we can do direct comparison. This is the main reason why we building the dedicated 8K theatre with custom screen surface...

The devil is in the details and details is where the Helium really shines. For the above comparison we have simply down-sized the 8K source to 4K and 2K respectively (which already provides an edge when compared to straight capture at those resolution) and then up-scale it back to 8K to see what those resolutions would look like when projected on the same size screen. When we have more time - we will do proper comparison against the Raven - 8K vs 4.5K - both S35. This will give us some direct pixel comparison between Helium and Dragon and how they respond to various light conditions. But off the bat - I feel like the Helium could be pushed farther then Dragon. Let's see...

While NHK here in Japan is pushing the 8K bandwagon - the rest of the world is still catching up to 4K. I believe 90% of the 8K Helium footage will be ultimately (for now anyway) down-scaled to 4K. So I have done a quick comparison between the Helium and the Raven - I know that the relative subject size is not equal, but you get the idea...:

Raven:

And the compare after scaling the Helium's 8K to 4K:

http://www.derylgroup.com/downloads/RED/HELIUM/Raven_vs_Helium.jpg

And we need to remember that we are still at the very early prototype stage of the Helium - especially when it comes to Graeme's magic, the color science. Dragon, on the other hand, is well matured and pretty much at its best...
More tests are indeed in order, wish we had the VV as well...

Peter,

can u post a direct pixel comparison Dragon vs. Helium ?

Example: same images as above, just a 800x500 pixels crop of each sensor. so we can directly see pixel level performance.

The downsampled pics looks great, as expected.

Thanks.

MIke - the crops in the post above are at 100% (true pixel size). If it helps - here are the two respective R3D's:

those 1080p and 4k slices are lilely better than you normally would get from native 2k and 4k cameras as these slices benefit from oversampling.

Hey Mike! The bellow frames are at true pixel size before any downsampling. The Helium is larger as I extracted 800 x 800 slice to be scaled down to 400 x 400 for comparison with the Raven, but the pixels in the bellow images are at 100%...

Indeed!

We are having a massive typhoon hitting us as we speak. As soon as we can - we do a proper direct comparison between the Raven (using "just" 4K sensor crop out of the 4.5K native res) and the Helium - putting the cameras in the same exact position in the same exact light and using the same exact lens. This should really help comparing Dragon to Helium in terms of direct pixel performance. Would be awesome to have the VV-8K as well for this test (hint, hint Jarred...), as it has more powerful innards when compared to the Raven / MG Weapon. I doubt it will make much difference (if any at all) - but it will put those "rumours" to rest once and for all at the same time... ;o)

Peter, thank you for doing this! These 100% are amazingly crisp. It looks as if crop mode will truly rock with Helium. 4K @120fps will probably look amazing, too... I wish I could play with one.

I'd love to compare a 100% 4K Helium crop with down sampled dragon footage to find out what it relates to. What I mean is: how many K Dragon imagery do you need to down sample to 4K until you reach the quality of a 4K helium crop. ;)

The Helium grain looks soo different to my eye.

Raven dark noise grain seems to dip into dark stops for longer. Helium seems to bounce-back to to higher brightness pixels sooner.

I wonder if VV8k oversampled to 4K would level up the playing field vs Helium 8k oversampled to 4K?

Incredible pics btw Peter. Thankyou for sharing (and hoping JL lends you a VV!)

The devil is in the details and details is where the Helium really shines. For the above comparison we have simply down-sized the 8K source to 4K and 2K respectively

Peter, love the work! Really like the way you had done the sample (presentation) with HD, 4K and 8K zoomed in. Which scaler did you use?

Also, any BTS on how you shot some of the macro? Most curious on H018.

Helium at 16K would be much larger then VV - at VV size Helium would be 11K (11222 px). Having said that - and based on what I have personally seen Helium footage looks like when down-scaled - an 11K VV Helium would make for an absolutely stunning 8K master footage. And before people say going beyond 8K is nuts - please remember that back in the days before DSMC1 came out - Jim hinted at this...:

I have used bilinear to minimise the "benefits" of the improvements that come with down-scaling. As Jarred pointed out (and I have mentioned as well in the comments bellow the graphic) - this still looks better then what the reality would be. Luckily - being based in Japan - I have access to all sorts of cameras. So I am getting hold of S35-seized sensors with both HD and 4K pixel resolution - so we can do true comparison against the Helium. I will then update the graphic accordingly...

Also, any BTS on how you shot some of the macro? Most curious on H018.

To say that we were too close for comfort is an understatement. Luckily for us - these were just the ordinary wasps - around 2 cm long. Japanese hornets are much bigger (around 5 cm) and notorious for their aggression. I would be wearing full bee-suit and use smokers if I were to film the actual hornets. With the wasps - you just have to stay calm and don't make any aggressive / fast movements. I had literally wasp landed on my finger without me even noticing (I was mesmerised by the Helium's imagery LOL). It just took off after a while without inflicting any harm. Front of the lens (the great Sigma 105 macro) was about 10 cm from the hive and we used single 15x10 cm LED panel (hand-held by one of my colleagues) to add some light, as the nest was in a shadow under an overhang in our apartment building. Nothing high-tech...

I would agree that we can still go bigger. Downsizing is a huge plus, but there is already is a current need. Here is a larger then 8K still from a test that i'm prepping for a lets just say a rather GIANT screen. File is 8196X6144. These tests will be part of some of the first footage ever showing on the Evans and Sutherlands 8K Digester 8 Laser projector onto a Giant Screen.

Stitched 8K images to create a 4:3 8K image. Shot on Helium with a Sigma 120-300f2.8 from the Canadian side of the Niagara falls.

To say that we were too close for comfort is an understatement. Thank you Peter, that is exactly what I was curious about with the BTS question. I guess you did not power up the camera near them as the fan, at startup, might have riled them up. :)

Anyone know how much the upgrade to the Helium Sensor from Forged Carbon will be? The cost / upgrade price has not been announced yet. October is the launch, which is probably when all will be revealed. Only thing we know is that those that have already paid for the 8K VV upgrade will get the Helium at no charge (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?147786-Helium-8K-s35-Dragon-8K-VV&p=1649602&viewfull=1#post1649602), while they continue to wait for the VV upgrade.

Pretty impressive looking, even on my run-of-the-mill home TV display. Can only imagine what this would look like on a giant screen.

Also, pretty amazed at the detail in the shadows in the Ripley's shot. Have you tried different OLPFs and are you seeing an advantage of changing them?
