I'm here at NAB and one of the workshop presenters said he heard that SI will be introducing a 4k camera at under $10k to undercut Red. I think this is bullsh1t but it came from a reputable presenter. Anyone else hear anything? I don't think it's possible.

well if SI is listing their 2k camera ( w/body) at 23k ... and 2k mini ( sensor unit) at 14k ....
you should know that up till monday 9am you will hear plenty of BS about many products & prices ...

That's the whole idea. Everybody has to rethink their strategies 'cause once RED is out there proving itself to be the camera "par excellence," buying any other camera will be simply illogical. In fact, I assure you that in order for a camera like the SI to have any chance to compete, they'll eventually have to bring their prices down at least $5,000 below that of the RED. It would be the only way to make it an alternative. That's what I think...but then again, I'm high right now.

But the price of red was announced a year ago, so everybody knew what could to be expected.
The very worst case possible ( which didnīt happen so far ) was that red would have missed their deadline or major technical targets, maybe thatīs why several companies still kept pushing their projects, they hoped that it would fail, even knowing that theyīll end more expensive and with less features ( Sony F23, SI-2K, Truecolorspace (?) ).
Thatīs the point of the whole thing, to deliver something complex as the red one in a very ambitious timeframe.
Iīm curious who SI is targeting as customers for their camera. Iīd say, their SI-mini could be an interesting add-on even for people with a Red camera
( special perspectives etc. ) - but the SI 2K ? No idea.

i wonder if these other companies are armed with a price bomb just in case they see red is a true camera and working.. they might drop their price bomb which could be a whole new price list.. who knows... wont happen until the first reds are shipped for 17.5 tho

BTW, I will be very happy if those other guys would undercut red`s price.
A 4K camera for less than 10K ? Iīd get that thing if it was 2K for the same price.
Iīm really hoping that red would produce a, letīs say 2K ( or even HD )camera for less than 10K. Thereīs a huge market of shooters in this segment.

You should really check out the Hydra HVX200 modifaction over at http://www.reel-stream.com/, and http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=92075
Specs: there's no price for it currently, but imagine 4:4:4 14 bit uncompressed RAW 2200x1080 up to 60p, and possibly the same extra 2.5 stops of latitude that an Andromedaized DVX has...possibly under 3k for the modifation. For a working setup, people have estimated 10-11k.

Nice. But what about direct to disk capture ( without computer ) ? As far as I understand this thing is tethered to a computer.
I was thinking of an HVX on Redcode Raw. No cassette deck. Just pure data.

2200x1080 ???
i read the explanation but the math i was taught my brain just can't seem to add up 960x540 native ccd's = 2200x1080 ?? ... yea, you can tell me 2+2+2 = 10 all you want BUT ..........
based on that perhaps at NAB panasonic will start calling the HVX 2K or true 1920x1080 HD ?

If they can do it, all good to them!

The SI2k body is a specialized laptop, which is why you can run the mini tethered to an external laptop or desktop. The SI site has the list of approved systems (DELL) they will support. You can use other systems from other manufacturers if they meet spec, buy they won't be supported. Considering some of the crap mobos out there (nVidia 680 SLI anyone?), I don't blame them for being conservative.
