Hey everyone it seems like we've gotten a little bit of a calm in activity in the last few days. With NAB starting today and RED having a major presence, I think there is only one description for this.

The Calm Before the Storm

  :sorcerer: :bleh:

NAB report day one: First day of Post|Production World Conference

I figured the DoP track was for me and Gary Adcock was in the house so I checked out the packed to the walls "Understanding HD Workflow for Production" which found Gary in evangelist mode. Most of the info was good for people who don't know much about HD but kinda light for the hardcores.

Steve Rosenblum who edited "Blood Diamond" spoke in the biggest room they had and it was still SRO. The clips were intense and he discussed some of the forces that shape an edit. Fidelity to story has to be the top priority but it is not the only one and they did make several changes after the test screenings.

Next Micheal Bravin and Jeff Kree from Band Pro broke out the big iron from Sony, the F23. Its aimed squarely at the features market but still uses 2/3" chips - ugh. They have improved the dynamic range and have a "log" style recording option that looks nice. The speed ramping demo was jaw dropping and used negative gain to maintain exposure from 1 to 60 fps without changing the stop or the shutter angle - sweet. Of course when somebody asked about the price...

The only place to get lunch is an Aramark concession, need I spew more...

Despite myriad tech issues Robert Goodman managed to give a valuable talk on HD monitoring options on set. They showed Truelight's tweak box for LCD panels, the CineTal system and then they broke out the LUTher box from Panavision - insert sound of car crash here - the demo went badly and the Panavision guy was spitting nails. Glad I wasn't in Gary's shoes, not that it was really his fault but he had to take the heat.

I blew off the D-20 demo to go to a seminar called "Understanding Camera RAW". A sharp guy from SI (Jason Rodriguez) gave a very informative talk that makes me even more psyched, if that's possible :w00t: about getting my RedOne. Notes from the talk can be found on the SI website and includes Cineform scoop, Joe Bob says check it out. The thing that blew me away was that the room was mostly empty - I guess a lot fewer people than I thought are aware that RAW is coming and what it will mean to the motion imaging community. Maybe it is just crack for colorists :usd:

The last slot was a panel about HD workflow that went from a glossed over rehash of post pipelines to a discussion of SAN architecture that went deep geek nine.

Fun day, enjoyed watching the speakers try not to violate various NDAs they are obviously under from RED, Apple and others. Sorry about the long post, especially since I don't have any rad RED news but I sensed a desire for a vicarious NAB fix so I stepped up. If it makes you feel any better my feet already hurt :innocent:

I leave Sunday afternoon. Right now in LA it's rainy, and it's lighteninging (ya it's a word.) like CRAZY! I'd love to shoot some HDR RED footage of it at 60p.

thanks blair.

btw - now i get the feeling how you folks who weren´t @IBC2006 to see the first red screening must have suffered :)

in the pre-internet era i always attended NAB and IBC, ~2002 i decided to just visit one international tradeshow a year should be enough...

... and now we are sitting here and hitting refresh on the browsers :)

The FCP announcement in 90 minutes time could have some RED detail in it, at least if FCP is going to support it.
