can any one tell me what is the default gain value (or the advised gain value to work with) and what are the considerations for choosing different gain values?

thanks a lot,

There are no gains to choose from in the RED camera. The ASA is not gain it is only metadata. Search the forum, there is a lot of valuble information regarding ASA.

what do you mean "there are no gains to choose from..."?
Look under the video settings, there is a sub-menue called gain in which you can choose a gain setting for each color which ranges from 0 to 4.
you can find it in the manual of build 15 at page 30 under the "video menue controls"
the reason I am asking these is that for some reason the default is not 0 and I wander why is that....

This are not camera gain values they are bearly adjusting the values of the preview output.

I don't have my camera handy to confirm, but I believe the default gain for all channels is 1.0. I think the value is a multiplier effect for the respective channels. Setting the gain to 0.0 effectives mutes that channel. values over 1.0 will boost the channel output. Like all other image settings, this is meta data that does not affect the recorded image (so you don't have to worry about over gaining and clipping as a result).

Hopefully Stuart or someone can definitively answer, but...
