I just ordered my FCS upgrade... Figured I'd just get it over with. Color alone alone justifies it. Besides, with Motion 3 and FC6 letting us finally mix different formats and frame rates on the same timeline, how could anyone resist?

I'm not to crazy about Final Cut besides the 4k.... I was hoping for more....:innocent:

Just got home and checking out the FCS options. mmm....finally different formats in FCP.
Motion really matured. I just love new 3d options.
Color came. Great news.

I was hoping the color corrector was integrated within FCS2. A Camera shake plugin? I used istablize for over 2 years now, where was Apple back then? Still same old interface. Now that shake is gone where's the high end compositor? Motion.....? Ya right!!!! DVDSP was untouched, besides a few presets added. I guess the only reason for NAB is the RED for me and few other companies. WTF is Apple focusing on? Ipods and phones. This FCS is no match for AVID. And is Final Touch Apple's new "COLOR"???????

Rick Darge

Yes, Final Touch is now Color ..

Jeff Kilgroe
04-15-2007, 01:52 PM
Color is based on Final Touch, yes... It is included with FCS2.

All things considered, it looks like Apple has moved a lot of Shake's features into Motion 3, but no new compositor yet. I do know they're working on one. My only gripe about all the new stuff is that DVDSP4 is unchanged. Color is a nice inclusion and given the price there's no reason not to upgrade - especially if you're like me and have been hoping for a low cost color grading app. Sure, there's better options out there and all kinds of cool toys like SCRATCH, but my budget only allows for so much. I'm already scratching at $50K-$60K in new hardware/software this year by my projections. Of course, that includes my RED package, but I've got to draw the line somewhere. FCS2 is only a $500 upgrade to those who are already using FCS now anyway.

AV I know Color comes with FCS2. I was hoping it would be a plugin rather that having to export or send to.

As for plugins Colorista looks pretty good and it's a FXplug for 32 bit processing

Curran Giddens

As far as I can tell Color is the same as FinalTouch 2K ($24,995).

That is worth the $500 upgrade alone.

Sorry, I had to LAUGH at that one.

I've been on Avid since 1991, and FCS2 is SO far ahead of Avid, that I doubt Avid will recover.

I just watched the Coen brothers video too, and that was very inspiring.

But it was pretty obvious that they had no use for such a product other than to screw around. Now a similar video with Roger Deakins fooling around with the red guys, that would be priceless :-)

FCSII is no match for Avid. Let me just whip out my 20,000 checkbook for an Adrenaline system that'll be outdated in a year...I LOVE proprietary hardware systems.

Apple gives you $25k of software essentially for free, and nobody's even mentioned Final Cut Server yet - not the sexiest addition, but a vitally important one given Media Manager's shortcomings. 1k takes care of THAT little problem.

Fancy new codec, new IO box in full HD, testimonials from Fincher and the Coens...enough of a show for me, anyhow.

Funny you should say that...I had lunch with Roger in January while working for him on a movie and told him all about RED (he was certainly interested, but obviously still a "film guy")!

FC server is big news to me. Have to wait for reviews though.
Avid and Sony are coming out with expensive DCM options. Wonder how they will justify their prices?

Not that it's important, but I love some of the music choices for the movies on Apple's site.
Notice the nice remix of Tosca's "Busenfreund" on the Final Cut Server video.....cool, Apple, really cool...

Is this upgrade everything we could have ever hoped for - of course not. It does have some very nice features - I am particularly happy to see the new Final Touch based color corrector with what sounds like easy integration with FCP, the inclusion of native RedCode support and the promise of a codec (ProRes 422) that just might have the right combination of quality, bit rate and wide acceptance - well I can hope can't I.

I am not miffed that 4k isn't fully supported at this point - patience grasshopper. We still have the advantage of oversampling and you can still pursue alternative post paths if you really have to have 4k deliverables this year. In the meantime I am just going to archive the 4k masters and celebrate an affordable, integrated 2k pipeline courtesy of mr. jobs.

Now, if they can actually ship it in May with minimal bugs they'll get my love.

Ah, gotcha.... Yeah, that would be nice to have it all integrated. OTOH having it separate may still give us some flexibility to use it with Shake or other apps too without bringing everything into FCP. I guess we'll learn more soon.

Holy shit.

I knew I was at about 950 the other day, but I hadn't paid attention to that. I've never done this on any forum before, ever. It took me 2 years to break 500 posts over at DVINFO and I thought I posted a lot there. Hehe.

What can I say, RED is like crack for me.

the thing that got me was when the announced RED at the Apple Event, there were a lot of people cheering. More than I expected. Which meant a few things:
1) most of the people in the audience knew what RED was
2) they were excited for it. (which is a different feel than i sometimes get from other forums)

i loved the presentation. cool new tools and Color looks like a lot of fun!

I could be wrong here Anders, but the REDCODE option was probably part of the ingest formats supported by FCP, whereas that image is the output codecs available, which would not include REDCODE as it is a camera specific format only.

Although I've used FCP at film school I use Premiere Pro at home, so here's hoping it too announces REDCODE support from the next version onwards.

My question is pretty simple.

2 years ago I could edit, realtime, chroma-key - note:DVCPRO 50 - using Final Cut Pro and Cinewave (before Avid bought Cinewave)

Never saw a replacement or heard if Apple Final Cut could edit high res files in realtime (chroma key that is)

So my question now, is in regards to red, will we be able to do realtime chroma-key in Final Cut with Red footage, without having to render? That would be totally cool. Seems like most people never have had the joy of working with realtime chromakey (no need to render) on high res files. (yes, I know DvcPRO 50 is not 'high res', but compared to mini-dv, etc., its not shabby and pulls a decent key...but thats in the past, Im interested in Red now.

Peace

dalen
